    I remember that my mom let me skip school that day so we could go see the flyover instead of being stuck at school and hearing about it on the news. I still clearly remember how that day was like, and I guess that's one advantage of having an ex-AF mom that loves aircraft!

    This is so cool. I was on the ground on the Mall looking up as these planes flew over. The next day I flew on B-29 FiFi, the day after, B-17 Aluminum Overcast and the B-24. Very honored to being able to do that and grateful to those people that work so hard to keep these planes flying and the history alive!!

    I built a B-29 AIRFIX model when I was a wee lad, even the model was huge comparing to the other AIRFIX models I had hanging from the ceiling. Great to see these planes still flying. And what an important role they have played in the history. GREAT VIDEO!

      I’ve been fortunate to have flown in Nine-O-Nine so very many times.
      The day it crashed I was to be on that aircraft, along with my two brothers.
      My flight from Phoenix to Bradley was so very late and we never flew.
      It was devastating to me not just for the horrible loss of life but for the Nine-O-Nine.
      I was so glad to have been one of the sponsors with my name right under the co-pilot’s window.

      My father in law flew B-24s in WW2 when he was in his early 20s. He said it was like flying a dump truck. He said B-24s were a handful and notorious for wanting to wallowing all over the sky, especially when they were loaded and in up in thin air. He said the scariest part was simply trying to stay in formation and not run into the planes around them that were also struggling to stay in formation. Like most WW2 vets, he's gone now, passed away in the '90s.

      Gringo I live a mile from the airfield where the Merlin was first fitted to the crappy Allison- engined Mustang.
      The result was a match made in heaven.
      (it was RAF Hucknall)

      Red Barchetta: I think you do the Allison-engined P51s a dis-service. They were only crappy at altitude; the RAF used theirs pretty successfully as low level fighters, fighter bombers and reconnaissance aircraft.

    • @Dalesmanable
      @Dalesmanable Před 7 lety +4

      soaringtractor: Er, Packard-built Merlins were a 99.9% copy of the Merlins built in Britain. Sure, there were some minor differences, for example the material of the main bearings in some engines, but to say that the Packard-built versions weren't Merlins is ridiculous; theres a very good reason for the clue in the title.

    • @Dalesmanable
      @Dalesmanable Před 7 lety +2

      soaringtractor: You should look up your facts and do a fair comparison. Your use of exclamation marks and 'British bullshit' suggest you have a lot to do there.
      If you want to be nationalistic, then look at the work that had to be done to upgrade the drawings for the higher tolerances needed by the much-superior US mass-production techniques.
      FWIW the Allison engine wasn't crap. It ran out of power at altitude but was still ok at lower altitudes. The rapid developments in engine technology and performance spurred by war left it behind and it couldn't be upgraded, so [later versions of] the Merlin were far better for the Mustangs the USAAF needed.
      Interestingly, Packard only built the Merlin because Ford reneged on their contract to build them in the US. Whether that was due to Ford or not is unclear; he was a fan of Hitler, received Germany's highest award for a foreigner, built equipment for the Germans throughout the war and shared Hitler's anti-Semitic views. Ford's plants in Germany were not attacked (all the equivalent non-US-owned ones were) and Ford later sued the US government for loss of production caused by reductions in component supplies due to Allied attacks elsewhere.
      At the end of the day, fitting Merlins to the Mustang was the quickest way to give the USAAF the long-distance high-altitude fighter it so desperately needed. It was a joint US-British effort of which both sides should be proud.

      I agree. B-17s were my favorite aircraft (especially the G) as a kid in the '60s, due to seeing them in movies and TV shows like "12 O'clock High". Also the fact my parents and my friends' parents were all of the WW2 generation, many of them veterans of the war, hearing them talk and tell their stories of those days was a big influence in my formative years. I'm sure it had a lot to do with why I ended up in the USAF on various jets including B-52s in the '70s and '80s.

    My Grandmother Gwen Fussey was flown to the East Coast of Canada right after the 2nd World War from the United Kingdom in B-24 that was Converted for VIP Transport. Gwen Fussey was trained to ID spies in her community and report back to Head Quarters by the United Kingdom Home Guard while her Husband Bill was off with the Canadian Artillery on the German front lines. The last year Gwen was alive she was dropped 5 times from the over head transfer lift, almost every Saturday in a row until she was dead from her injuries, Glengary long term Nurse care home 2016 Victoria British Columbia Canada. The first time i witnessed my Grandmother being assaulted was back in the mid 1970's on her Birthday by one of her neighbors that lived across the street and just a few houses down. My Brother and followed the man to the Cedar hill Golf course, after he noticed us tailing him, he threatened to kill us if we ever followed him again. Rest in peace Gwen, Never new you were a spy in the 2nd great World War. Pretty funny story. Rest in peace big Brother, Ken Bialkowski, found dead in his car, in his home. 2018, the family was told he killed himself because of the aledged Sexual assault that was filed against him. Now i am the only witness left. The last time i saw my Big Brother, I talked to him about what we had seen, (cell phone in hand). The last words Ken Bialkowski told his brother me, " Don't be so paranoid, it happened so long ago, no one cares". He told me those words after i told him to pay attention, they will break into your home drug your food, water and Vitamins with Narcotics and you will just be another suicide that never gets investigated as a Murder.

    If that's the same B-29 "FiFi," that I saw at an Amarillo Air Show, Amarillo, TX (late 80's early '90's) as part of the Confederate Air Force, she's held up well. I was left in awe as to how big it really is.
