Bane is *heavily* inspired by luchador wrestling, and was made during the very heavy-handed “drugs are bad” era of comic books. If you can find the story “Batman: Venom”, we get to see more of that, but the one he’s known most for is “Knightfall” ofc. I’m glad to see the Batman train continues to roll through!

Bane's whole "You've got nothing" dialogue, even the part where he crushes the Batarang and his "pathetic little toys" remark; all ripped right from the Knightfall comics, which was an awesome attention to detail 🖤

Well, apart from one key difference regarding how that fight played out, of course.
Regarding Bane in the show, the producers of BTAS actually really disliked Bane as acharacter and were forced to include him in the show because he was popular in the comics at the time. They said they were "pissed at seeing this nobody come out of nowhere and beat Batman". For that they intentionally made him much less of a threat in the show and intentionally made his design goofier by leaning much more towards Mexican wrestler designs and by having holes for his nose and mouth on his mask as opposed to Bane's more mercenary look and mask that covers his entire face in the comics and they completely ignored his struggle and addiction to Venom as well as his personal motivation for wanting to defeat Batman and just briefly elude to it with a couple short lines. In the comics, the reason Bane hates Batman is because when he was growing up in the island prison in South America known as Peña Duro, he was haunted by constant nightmares of a dark demonic bat creature and he believes Batman to be the manifestation of those nightmares and that killing him will rid him of his demons which is why you may remember Bane saying once in Arkham Origins to Batman "I've long waited for this moment. With your death, I will find peace".
The Arkham Origins game is widely known for having the best and most comic accurate depiction of Bane ever outside the comics. They really managed to expertly portray Bane's intelligence and struggle with Venom as well as his Santa Priscan background in that game. The Tom Hardy Bane is honestly considered a bit of a laughing stock among comic fans and is generally ignored as it's really Bane in name only. Even though Bane wasn't a character they were particularly fond of the idea of having in BTAS, despite that they still ended up including him and while they didn't do a terrible job by any means and Henry Silva was perfect casting for the character, but at the end of the day he really was just a far cry from what he was in the comics in terms of lore and threat level and isn't really among the best Bane adaptations, although it's better than the movie version.
The hole in the mask was probably just so they could give him more personality by showing his lips moving when he spoke. Certain things that work in still comic panels don't necessarily translate well to animation. He also kissed Candice in the script, so there was a practical reason for his mouth to be uncovered.
The worst Bane, is the live action Batman and Robin where he's little more than a sidekick for Poison Ivy. I don't think he even talks.
To me this was always the coolest design for Bane. He looked like a muscular Jack Kirby villain.
Yeah, never was fond of the "Dark Knight Rises"Bane. All respect to Tom Hardy, but the weird whiny breathy voice he used took me out of it. I know they tried to go more realistic as well, but why didn't they just give him some kind of steroid?
Of course, I'm of a mind that DKR isn't canon(since "TDK"is a much better finale to the franchise, so thats fine.)
Where was I? Oh yes, Bane.
Yeah, Arkham Origins has been the closest thing to the OG Bane in terms of adaptations(with a second being the one from "Justice League:Doom". They haven't given him enough attention and I feel like too many consider him to be dumb muscle thanks to some of his iterations(replacing Killer Croc with Bane in "Batman:Hush"adaptation, one of the worst changes). We've never really had any animation that focused on his backstory and how he trained himself and educated himself, with his story being a little like Batmans own. Hell, the fact that he's been considered to be an heir for Ra's Al Ghul has never been brought up(and the fact he isn't is mainly because Talia loves Bruce over him.)
I personnally LOVE TDKR, it's even my favorite of the three even though I know TDK is much better. And I actually love Tom Hardy's Bane. But I can understand why some people may not like him.
Also Arkham Origins Bane is the best.
bane’s backstory and how he was born in a prison because of the crimes of his parents is a really cool, really dark, very grungy 1990s kinda story. The knightfall/knightquest/knightend saga in the 90s took place a little over a year in the comics- and it’s basically bane’s introduction. And it was some of the first comics I ever collected! He’s a fun and scary character!
In the comics, Killer Croc managed to put up a good fight against Bane. But here he gets his ass handed to him.
Also, in the comics, Bane successfully broke Batman's back. But Bane nearly exploding from overdosing from his own drug is even more brutal.
It seems like they don't take Killer Croc as seriously in this series?
Actually they fought twice in the comics in the knight fall arc. The first time was when Jean Paul valley was trying to take down killer croc unsuccessfully and bane intervened and crushed crocs arms with his bare hands and then proceeded to beat him up in a one sided fight. The second time is the one you’re talking about where croc fought bane in the sewers after bane captured robin and held him hostage in a similar fashion as to the way its depicted in this episode. In that fight croc destroyed the venom distributor to help level the playing field, that’s where it was a more even fight.
It's funny, in the 80s Killer Croc was introduced almost exactly the same way as Bane. New criminal from out of town, impossibly strong, beats up some other villains to show how tough he is, even starts a jailbreak at Arkham to wear Batman down. Bane beating Croc was kinda like DC was saying he's the new, improved model.
Eh, initially he got brutalized. He’s subsequently put up better and better fights, but in the 90s era Bane could break him even without his Venom enhancements.
@@MegMageReacts there are times when he’s portrayed as a sympathetic victim though, I direct you to Batman issue 471 as an example.
The creators of BTAS were not fans of Bane, so I suspect Batman's "is this the best you've got, Rupert" line was a subtle way of showing that they didn't really see Bane as a threat to Batman. They still did the character justice, though, as this is far closer to the original comics Bane than any of his live action appearances.
well Bane was a recently new character at the time being created in the comics not too long before his debut in this episode.
This version of Bane was based off the masked "Lucha Libre" wrestlers of Mexico/South America...in that culture, the most disrespectful think you can do to a defeated opponent is unmask him

I love Bane one of my favorites Batman villains. I always get sad when they don't depict him like in the comics because he's one of the smartest villains and the strongest too.

My current DCU obsession is Golden Age stuff (ie 1935-1955), especially the Justice Society of America. The old stuff is super corny but I love seeing the origins and historical aspect of the DCU.
Bane is incredibly strong, intelligent, and cunning in the comics. This animated depiction is pretty accurate to that.
As you deduced, the few live-action depictions of him tend to be very…off.
Without spoiling too much of the Batman Forever film, he is often just muscle for someone else. Dark Knight Rises featured a slightly better depiction but I could not stand the accent! I hear this animated depiction of Bane when I think of the character.

The "new" intro is with theme music by Shirley Walker. The melody might be familiar, as it's been the character leitmotif for Batman for some time, as well as the main theme of Mask of the Phantasm.
The season 1 intro was an arrangement (also by Walker, if I'm not mistaken) of Danny Elfman's Batman theme from the Tim Burton movie. I'm guessing they moved on from it specifically to give the show more of its own identity.
I honestly love it more than the first one. The music at least. Walker’s composition just nails that tragic heroism of the character and sounds a little more upbeat and energetic imo. Honestly one of my favorite Batman themes of all time.
@@a_fine_edition2746 I like both for different reasons, but I do feel that Walker's theme has a stronger association with *this* Batman, specifically, than Elfman's theme, which is associated with Keaton's Batman first and this Batman second. And it does have a lot of versatility, as it can be operatic, tragic, upbeat/hopeful, etc., depending on how it's played. Which very much fits this show's nuanced and versatile take on the character.

To answer the question about the new intro, Batman the Animated Series went through three major iterations. Season 1 is the only season technically called Batman the Aninated Series, though that's the name everyone uses to refer to the show as a whole. Season 2 was called The New Advantures of Batman and Robin. Season 3 was called The New Batman Advantures. Season 1 released from 92-93, season 2 from 94-95, and season 3 from 97-98. The reason for the break in-between 2 and 3 is that the same writers from BTAS created Superman The Animated Series, too. That show came out in 1996, in between seasons 2 and 3 of BTAS. Each iteration of BTAS had a new name and a new intro. HBO Max doesn't follow the original release schedule that the show did so you may see the intros change back and forth.
They also did some character redesigns that were completely unnecessary, mainly Catwoman and Joker.
During this season the show was rebranded to include Robin as a regular due to executive pressure to appeal to kids. If this surprised you you'll really be surprised watching the first episode of "season 3" which is actually a new show entirely, referred to as "The New Batman Adventures" by the producers in promotion material. This season is the last of the original run. What comes after aired on The WB a few years later and takes place a few years after the show, with new characters and a new look.
Fox Kids wanted to rebrand the show to feature Robin more, which is why we get the new intro.
Henry Silva played the older thief in oceans eleven Saul Zerga. He was a great actor I loved him. Great voice actor too.

this was my first experience with Bane, which is why i have never understood most of his other interpretations as being a dumb, muscle-bound goon villain. This Bane is intelligent, in control, with an aura of class and sophistication. The Tom Hardy Bane is also an interesting take but this remains my favourite design...charming, cool, intelligent and even suave, but a cold blooded killer, amoral, ruthless and vicious....even when taking his boost, even when "roided-up" he is still in control
I was never really a fan of the changed opening sequence as it's just a montage of clips from the show, but it was changed at the time because the title of the show was changed (briefly) to The Adventures of Batman and Robin to reflect the focus of the show on the team instead of just Batman.
This episode was a big deal when it came out - Knightfall had just happened in the comics, so my friends and I were all eagerly anticipating this episode to see how closely it mirrored the comics.
On the whole this episode was a good representation of the character and story, as there were stringent limitations in place for cartoons at the time, so they really had to make compromises while getting away with whatever they could.
That said, Bane's creation was a direct result of The Death of Superman.
That event was an incredibly successful one for DC, and with Batman being Superman's counterpart, they wanted a similar event that would shake up Batman as much and lead to another sales boom. Both events wound up arguably causing more harm than good for both characters, as it lead to convoluted, nonsensical story bloat and characters that would by and large fall to the wayside rather than have substantial longevity.
Bane came along on the heels of the Death of Superman storyline. Knightfall, Knightquest and KnightsEnd. Bane first wears Bruce beyond exhaustion, then breaks him.

another reason why killer croc was chosen as Bane's lead to Batman in action is because there is a comic book story of Bane and Killer Croc fighting each other. and that was in the Knightfall series.
Lucha wrestling can feel a little odd to anglophone audiences because we usually connect it with its “Professional Wrestling” aspect rather than its “dramatic contest of strength” side. But it works very well because there is a principal in Lucha wrestling about the sacredness of the mask. The highest risk fights are those when the loser is unmasked at the end.
Fighters continue to wrestle in their careers unmasked, but they do so with a constant visual reminder that, when the chips were down, they lost and were unmasked.
So in this episode where Batman wrenches off Bane’s mask, or when Bane wrenches off Batman’s cracked mask in Dark Knight Rises, they’re tapping into that (even if everyone will mask up and become superheroes and villains again rather than Lucha fighters).

I feel like this episode makes the most sense as far as an adaptation of Bane for this series. It’d be impossible to show Bane how he is in the comics.
Bane's defining story is "Knightfall," which kicks off with the "Vengeance of Bane." DC released the entire arc on the 25th anniversary in 2018 and 2019 as a multi-volume book set. It's a beast of a story, but it's iconic. Though if you just want a quick primer on Bane, "Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1" introduces the character and details his origin. I doubt you'll read that and NOT want to read "Knightfall" as soon as you're done. 🤙
Danny Trejo voices Bane in Young Justice, unfortunately Bane is under utilized in that series and only appears in a few episodes with speaking lines the rest he's just a back ground character. He's look is pretty cool in the series he wears cargo pants instead of tights and is more of guerilla soldier than a full on merc. You can hire him of course but he only takes jobs that he see's as useful to his ambitions and not just for money.
Bats kinda broke his rule, ain’t no way a mob boss would let her live and Bane could’ve o.d or gone catatonic. And yep Bane Latino, he from fictional island Santa Prisca presumably off Mexico in the Caribbean Sea considering the luchador theme
Making him unnecessarily dumb is a crime against the character. He's basically an anti-Batman.

There was a few Batman TAS movies where it was Batman and Robin. In season 3 they wanted to have Robin pop up a bit is all.
This pretty much is the real Bane more in-line with the source material. Same with Arkham Origins
HBO dropped the ball presenting these shows in this order.

Bane is my favorite Batman villains in comics. I was a kid when the Knighfall story came out.

Both Ra's al Ghul and Bane were whitewashed in the Nolan movies. Ra's is supposed to be Middle Eastern and Bane is supposed to be Latino.
From what I remember, it's never clearly stated where Ra's al Ghul is from, and he's been depicted as European, Middle Eastern, East Asian, or South American depending on the story. His creators even stating that he was always meant to be racially ambiguous and could be from any ethnic background as to add the unknown and timeless nature of the character. Whereas Bane in the Nolan movies was intended to be Romani, or at the very least, Tom Hardy based his performance off a Romani person he had known.
@@discozmic Ra's is generally depicted as being of at least some Arab descent modern stories; or at least, his daughters have both claimed to be half-Arabic in the comics, and we know their mothers weren't Arab.
Knightfall is one of the most notable Bat-stories if rather overlong. It was in part a response to the Death of Superman story, showing our two iconic heroes finally facing their climactic defeats and what follows from there... until they come back. But Bane showed a lot more staying power and character than Doomsday, even joining the Suicide Squad at one point.
And after the Squad, leading his own series and team, Secret Six, which was fantastic
I’m glad you connected Bane and Doomsday. They have a very similar purpose narratively in their respective iconic storylines. They’re there to cause a major traumatic moment that shakes up the landscape of their respective heroes. Doomsday was there to kill Superman, and that’s about it. He dies in the very same story as the two battle of the finish, with Supes barely hanging on after Doomsday is dead. Meanwhile, Bane’s sole purpose both narratively and even character-wise was to break the Bat. After that happened I think he lost a bit of his staying power in subsequent stories. He’s never been as iconic as in Knightfall imo.
The issue I think is that they kept on bringing these two back in increasingly less-substantial roles. Doomsday’s now often handled by Superman like he’s just another threat. He doesn’t feel as powerful anymore because often he’ll get beaten by the JL, or even just by Supes alone, without major repercussions. Bane meanwhile hasn’t ever really reached that 90d peak again. He broke the Bat, then kinda just faded into almost B-lister territory.

Fortunately Bane has gotten much better characterization than the nonverbal monster Doomsday over the years. I like when Bane is on a team and playing the same ultra-serious straight-man role as Batman does in the Justice League.

Bane is my second favorite Batman villain. In the comics, he is an extremely good fighter (almost as good as Batman, even without venom), a great tactician, and a polyglot.
In the comics, not only did he break Batman's back, he put him in a coma.
He figured out that Bruce Wayne is Batman just by watching him move, and once, he figured out that Alfred was in the military just by looking at him.

VENOM OVERLOAD! This is one of my favorite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series! I remember when I first saw it, I thought Bane was going to break Batman’s back like he did in the comics. Years later, I read the Knightfall story and gained a better understanding of Bane as a character. If you want to see another great fight between Batman and Bane, watch Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, if you haven’t already.

Fab reaction as ever...personally, I think my favourite Bane-centric moment occurs in the Batman/TMNT crossover animated movie from a few years back - I won't go into details in case Meg is planning to react to it at some point, but for anyone else who reads this and hasn't seen that movie, it's well worth checking out, yes...?

You are right, a Majority of Versions are hyper intelligent. He is supposed to mirror Batman by being what Bruce could be with his Brains and Brawn.

Bane is one of my favourite Batman's villains and although I do prefer Arkham Origins Bane as the best depiction of the character so far, I do still like this depiction of the character as well, though I do wosh his mask didn't have holes for his nose and mouth since the original full mask design is so iconic and more threatening.
Bane is arguably Batman's superior is multiple ways not just is he physically superior, but Bane his a master strategist and has a genius level IQ after years of mental and physical training in prison and with all his skills he was able to break Batman's back and his spirit in his debut comic "Batman: Knightfall" making him a force to be reckoned with and one of Batman's greatest threats, and he alone even figured out Bruce Wayne was Batman. The only difference between them is that Bane relies on Venom serum.

If anything Bane is the perfect mirror to Batman in many ways and is rather disheartening to see adaptations today so often depict him as a muscle bound meat head instead of the terrifying mastermind he is. Like I said Arkham Origins probably has my favourite take on him so far.
He's based on luchadore wrestlers. And the whole point was for him to be stronger and smarter than batman.
Also, people underestimate robin which ends up working against them, similar to how people would underestimate batman at first.

Funny you mention it feeling like a new show.
Season 3 onwards renames the show "New Batman Adventures," and features a bit of an artstyle and tonal shift, with the emphasis moving towards secondary characters like Robin getting a bit more spotlight.
At this point, the show rebranded as "The Adventures of Batman & Robin", with the new title sequence.
The art-style shift and change to "The New Batman Adventures" is either season 3 or season 4 depending on who you ask (the DVD release put it as season 4), and was a few years later (in 1997), alongside season 2 of Superman: The Animated Series (the two shows were broadcast as "The New Batman/Superman Adventures").
My favorite DC Comics adaptation is the Doom Patrol TV series. Maybe react to it sometime?

As soon as Meg said she loved his accent in this version & she mentioned Latin America, I'm over here thinking, at least as far as the mask in BTAS goes, & along with the luchador fighting style & all (which he's studied & trained in, along with martial arts, meditation & many other fighting styles), I think that's definitely a reference to lucha libre.. Poor ol' Bane..lol. Everyone always acts like he's this slow, dimwitted idiot (Looking at YOU, 'Batman & Robin' (1997), the 'Harley Quinn' tv series, 'Robot Chicken DC Specials', etc..) However in actuality tho, he's very intelligent, cunning & intimidating, all traits that Tom Hardy played him to be.. He also knows like 7 different languages, has a classical education, is physically a bodybuilder while the strength of ten men & can break a man literally in half (Sorry Bats).. He not only survived the worst prison in the world (Pena Duro), he GREW UP there, Annnd he's a demolitions expert & seems to have the mind of a nuclear physicist at times. Lol. And that's all BEFORE ever taking the Venom that makes him damn near invincible! Lol.. Definitely one of the baddest villains to come out of Bats' Rogues Gallery..

7:37 I wish I knew. Guess it wasn't "realistic" that supers were wearing, you know, suits. Now everyone's got layers upon layers of kevlar and the costumes are a bunch armor fragments, often with those ugly chinstraps. It's like drawing details for the sake of drawing.

Hey Meg just wanted to give some heads-up. You're getting closer to the more iconic DC animated film and the shared animated DC universe with starts with Justice league: War. The animated films are not always accurate. For example, the whole batgirl and batman thing. That was something that was only in the movies not the comics. In the animated Batman: Hush film they make Riddler Hush instead of Thomas Elliot. So just letting you know
Meg you gotta check out My Adventures With Superman it's definitely one of the best depictions of Superman in my opinion the movies could learn a thing or two from that show

I think that’s genuinely my favorite Harley Quinn story… ever. Just so fun and sweet and sincere. Wish it had been the catalyst for a more drastic shift in Harley’s character in the show. I would’ve loved to see a more noticeable redemption for her.

im like a month later but heres something funny Killer croc was the original BANE big muscle SMART gangster and basically scarred the joker off of gotham, croc would eventually decay into a dumber muscle goon, Bane similarly starts by doing that to croc but with the TAS writers and then later media he also gets slooowly turned into a muscle dumbass vs someone who can 1 v 1 batman with brains and strength

Bane is based on Luchador a wrestler who never unmasks unless defeated. Unmasking Bane would be a sign of dishonor.
In Batman and Robin, the movie he was reduced to more of a "Hulk" type.

Kind of a controversial take, but I think Bane’s introduction in the animated series is a little underwhelming. They could have gone all “Knightfall” with Bane’s introduction, but I can see how the show couldn’t quite pull that story off. Still, they do get the character’s extremely efficient tactical expertise right, and I do think Bane’s character gets better throughout the course of the DCAU. Bane is certainly no joke whenever he shows, and I really enjoy how the DCAU manages to pull this off
My favorite version is the one in the 1994 knightfall audio drama. He is played by Peter Marinker and he is absolutely terrifying. Also, why watch a martial arts movie when you can watch an anime and or manga that is absolutely in love with the craft? It's called Baki the grappler and it has an anime made in the early 2000s and the Netflix series that takes place directly after it.

the producer didnt want Bane in the show.. they though he to much of a gimmick character..so hes only in this one episode

Liked the episode as a kid but the ending and him roiding the fuck out absolutely freaked me out… the bulging eyes.
Apparently the team didn’t really like Bane who was a brand new character in the comics around the time, but I think they still do him Justice. He’s smart and cunning and Batman only wins by exploiting his one weakness.

Bane in BTAS is also voiced by Ron Perlman, like Croc. Bane is from Santa Prisca, which is DC's version of Cuba. He was a prisoner who was tested for a super-soldier serum, Venom, which enhanced his already powerful strength and intellect. He busted out and fled to the States with the knowledge of how to make Venom.
The next version of Bane should be like he is in the comics, where he is both an intelligent and physical foe for Batman. Tom Hardy was the smart crime lord with some of the character's strength, just without the Venom. And we don't talk about _Batman and Robin_ 😬
Bane is the son of Sir Edmund Dorrance AKA King Snake, a blind British master martial artist turned mercenary. Having served in the Royal Regiment of Artillery distinguishably he went on to becoming a mercenary after befriending a few. He then went on to offer his services in various anti-communist operations around the world amassing considerable wealth along the way. This would eventually bring him to Santa Prisca. There he aided the rebels against Santa Prisca's totalitarian communist government. This is also where he started a relationship with a fellow female rebel and the two slept together. King Snake was forced to flee after being permanently blinded by gunfire after his camp was ambushed by government commandos in a surprise attack. He left the female rebel for dead believing she perished in the hail of gunfire and left the country. Turns out however she was alive and pregnant with Edmund's son. Once captured by the government forces, she and her son whom she gave birth to while incarcerated would go on to serve life sentences at the inhumanly brutal Pena Duro prison in lieu of King Snake's.

I'm okay with movies taking characters in different directions, but I did not like the direction they took with Bane in Dark Knight Rises. He just felt like a very watered-down version of the Bane I know from this series and the Arkham games. As much as I love Tom Hardy, his 'Bane' wasn't it for me.
This is the OG Bane, way better then the CRAP Tom Hardy and Christopher Nolan tried doing in rises.

@@Kickinthescience yeah Nolan's Trilogy started out very faithful and even The Dark Knight is very faithful to a lot of things. I don't know if Ledger's death had to do with it or if he was just burnt out with the Batman character but Rises takes some leaps that just simply do not land. I always thought an interesting twist would be if Talia was actually Maggie Gyllenhaal's Rachel. The League of Shadows got her out before the bomb went off and she comes back to wreak havoc on Bruce's life for not choosing to save her, even though she's not aware Joker switched addresses. Unfortunately Bane would still have to be a side villain.
And the reason why Ra's al Ghul would not have known about her in Batman Begins is because he simply abandoned the child for being weak. So that's how she became adopted by the Waynes nanny in begins or whatever.

Did I hear well? You want to check latin amrican luchador movies XD? Or you meant american movies, but featuring "luchadores"? The main difference would be that latin american films would be in spanish (many with no subtitles available); and luchador wrestling is not the same as boxing (there are some boxing films, but oddly enough they are not as numerous as luchador films).
But if you mean to see latin american luchador films... there are dozens XD! They are practically an entire genre on this side of the border. Form 1950's to 1980's, in Latin America (particularly Mexico), "luchadores" were the superheroes of the movies: they battled mad scientists, zombies, vampires, evil wizards, aliens... and the wrestlers in the fims were (mostly) the real wrestlers, to preserve the fantasy (and because, basically) there were no stuntmen capable of replicating their techniques (and the name of the wrestler was the main hook to sell tickets).
