    This is the best video i've found about TS. My tics are very similar to yours except I experience more vocal tics. It's crazy how little the average family Doctor knows about TS. I've had it my whole life but wasn't diagnosed until 29 because they always said it was a bad habit I would grow out of. I was finally in a position to seek diagnosis myself last year and it's been so rewarding to allow myself to just be more okay with ticing. Now if someone asks about it I have a definite answer and can educate them when they inevitably say "oh isn't that the thing that makes you cuss?!" Before I would feel embarrassed and say "idk why I do it. I just do." which didn't make me feel very empowered.

    I used to sit close to a teenage boy on the bus for about 2-3 years. He made sudden noises and at first I thought he was being silly and I may have been startled when he did it again. I wondered if he was trying to get bad attention. But as the weeks continued I observed that his noises where involuntary and accompanied with sudden involuntary movements of the face and neck (or the noises accompanied the movements not vice versa). I was pretty certain he was not mentally ill or even sick, just seemed to have a movement problem. It looked pretty similar to what my high school math teacher had, but the teachers symptoms were less severe than the boy's. I was glad to see that the teenage boy had some friends. And he seemed to have less symptoms when he was glued to his phone playing video games. I off course, cannot know for sure. But can only guess it may have been Tourette Syndrome. What bothers me is the need to have such conditions diagnosed by mental health practitioners when it is not 'mental' but a physical condition.

    • @Shemmassian
      @Shemmassian  Před 4 lety +10

      Thanks for sharing these stories, Vaneshree! Based on your description, it indeed sounds like your bus peer was showing signs of TS.
      I appreciate you being so open, too. Mistaking tics for bad habits is quite common. But after a while, folks understand they're involuntary and almost stop noticing them. At least that's what people tell me.
      I hear you about the diagnostic concern. "Mental health" is an interesting term, because the work spans emotional, behavioral, and neurological concerns. While TS has neurological foundations and emotional impacts, its symptoms are purely behavioral. Collectively, it's hard to neatly categorize TS as a mental vs. non-mental condition.

    I once asked someone if they were ok while they were ticking. It was genuine concern. I wanted to make sure they weren't having a seizure or something to that effect. It was actually a kid who was somewhere between 10-12. When I asked they told me it was Tourette's Syndrome. I just responded with something like "Ah, ok gotcha. I just wanted to make sure you were ok". For that person to be like "Ok, don't swear at me" is rather insensitive. Though it can be a good time to educate people. There's someone else I have crossed paths with that was making a sound that sounded like a soft sneeze. I always wondered if that was a tic but I never asked.

    What an incredible well explained video, Sir! Thank you for that!
    One questions that I would be interested in is, how did your Tourette develop?
    When was the worst period in your life and when did it become better?
    Right now I am 22 and it feels like my vocal tics are worse then usual (probably because of all the stress at work and university)
    Thank you for your response!

    • @Shemmassian
      @Shemmassian  Před 4 lety +4

      You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it. To answer your questions:
      I'm not sure how my TS developed. Somewhere around 8-9 years old, I started making facial grimaces, and it took off from there. The worst period was probably in middle school and high school, which is fairly typical because tics tend to lessen in early adulthood in many cases.

A lot of the Tics you did and also talked about I did. The weird thing is I have been doing the wrist click my whole life. I thought it was just because it felt good. I am 18 and for for over a year now I’ve had a head/neck/face twitch and with that I formed the habit of saying fuck because of embarrassment. It gradually became more common but I shrugged it of as a flared up muscle in my neck. But after lack of sleep and being very drunk in a pub (a place I don’t go often because I get overwhelmed) I had a full on tic attack and had to be walked home because it triggered a breakdown and it also wouldn’t stop! So I was already anxious clearly and it got worse because I became more anxious. Anyway, the swearing I believe was a habit and the neck/face/head twitch are technically three different movements but most of the time they’re one big one so I have no idea what this means. I think for now I will avoid lack of sleep and stressful situations but I will definitely bring it up to my gp at some point because it’s not an easy way to live and it’s a bit alarming that they’ve become a daily occurrence.

I also don't know how to approach the topic of "hey mom and dad I think I need to get this figured out" so yeah. When I was young I had a weird thing with my tongue that my parents just called a habit and got mad when I kept doing it when they asked me not to. I had a hard blinking one when I was abt 7. I also had a strange wrist moving and popping one since I was abt 9 and I had a weird one with a noise from my nose and one from my mouth since I was 6. I'm pretty dang sure I don't have Tourette syndrome, but maybe I have tics of some sort? They only happen in the morning or a couple hours after I wake up, and it's not always due to sleep deprivation, since sometimes I'll just do them when I've got a full 8 hours of sleep or not do them at all after getting like 4 hours of sleep. They typically just consist of me dropping things, slamming down items, shaking my hands, or sometimes throwing things. Since they happen typically during the morning I'll be eating cereal and slam down my spoon or throw it, or I'll shake a water bottle really bad when holding it or trying to take a drink, and I'll often just drop clothing items I'm trying to put on. I don't have any vocal tics going on though, so I'm sure it's probably not Tourette syndrome I just find it strange they only last within the first couple hours of waking up, as I won't do them at all throughout the day no matter how tired I become, they only happen after waking up.

    i have adhd and OCD too, and the urges you said. and I can stop them for a few seconds too if I focus.
    damn even the engaging stuff are true too.
    but it happens mainly when i'm nervous. when i'm nervous i tick like crazy, and i literally grunt "UUUGH" out loud if I am experiencing pain.

    Hi, just curious, how do the random phrases that are spoken or shouted out happen? For example cursing, do some people hear the curse words from friends or family and then it comes out as a tic for the person with TS?

    My worst tick is with face movement and eye blinking . It makes me tired and sometimes stress. Tried many times to focus and stop letting it to happen but it doesn't last more than 10 minutes. Got mocked by friends since primary school but getting used to it. :)
