NEVER TOO SMALL Hong Kong City Escape Small Apartment -52sqm/559sqft

- Set on the 31st floor of a modern high rise, Desmond Wong meticulously designed his apartment to feel like a sanctuary amidst the bustling sounds of Hong Kong. A neutral palette, sheer curtains and raised furniture create a sense of lightness; along with arched doorways that soften the edges and bring a harmonious feeling to the space. The clever use of textured wallpaper in a similar colour to the walls introduces a sense of earthiness in the space and full length patina mirrors on the wardrobe doors soften the reflective light from the buildings outside.

"home is a manifestation of ones habits and needs" was a great quote!
Absolutely, powerful words.
He was wonderful throughout. Very thoughtful
Still cannot believe he’s not a designer
No wonder my life’s a mess
Me living in a literal hut because I’m a broke student 😂
The fact that this guy isn’t a designer is what gets me. This is absolutely stunning!
His sense of style, design, and aesthetics is amazing. So meticulous, thoughtful, and eloquent too. I'm very, very impressed. His furniture studio should be a dream
He’s actually the owner of a furniture shop among the best in the city.
This is small for you? HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA those funny gringos
@@RaboFrangalStream I think it says more about what you think is small.
Taste can't be bought. He has great taste
I love how this guy isn’t a designer but he gives really logical and straightforward tips that actually make sense.
I feel like I just took an entire design/decor course in 7.5 minutes... 🤯🤯🤯
Hello Mary 🥰😊🥰
Yes!
Am I the only one obsessed with the arched doorways 😍😍😍
I find that to be the best feature. The apartment itself is feels so peaceful and relaxing... very important when you live in a bustling city. And those archways are like beautiful music in the background. Gorgeous!!

Mediterranean home feel
@@NovaLena22 : for sure. But , I think, archway looks so nice because of high ceiling.
So beautiful and calm.

The arched doors are genius. They make an otherwise boring box into a classic space.
"home - is a manifestation of one's habits and needs.
It is important, to examine how you live, what works & doesn't work for you, prior to the design process.
It's only after this examination, that you can really incorporate meaningful solutions & design ideas into your space."
so true! loved it!
This is NOT SMALL in HK, it's humongous!
Yeah that's like a 2 million dollar apartment right there lol
@@GeneralKenobi69420 you don’t mean HKD right...?
Ikr. This is like 3x bigger than the standard apartment in HK. Though, this apartment is beautiful though!
Yes! Came here to say that lol & he lives by himself!!! Smh...
@@manting512 2 million USD doesn't really cut it right now. My relatives recently purchased a 20sqm apartment next door that cost 1.3 million USD
It's so interesting what colour pallets evoke in us. How neautral tones don't overwhelm us, how the colour red we apparently associate with food. I feel calm in this apartment.
Same here..🙂
There's a thin line between calm and boring ... And this is definitely boring.
Yes they would have been such tiny rooms!
@@DiegoMartinez-qx5xo yeah but notice how they said it made them calm, and how they have their own opinion
I completely agree! Wabi Sabi really is an amazing thing.
He says he's not a "designer" but this, to me, is a pretty masterful design. I hope he can design more spaces that we can enjoy in the future!
“I’m not a designer” Oh honey, YES YOU ARE!
Hahaha
So true. ☆♡
I was already convinced when half the apartment wasn't covered in plywood but damn that arch is beautiful
Yes!!! Like raw wood has a time and a place in design but that place is not every single possible surface.
Yes, too many apartments with almost full plywood and timber in many of this channel's videos, with all the owners describing it as "warm". This was the only one where I felt I could describe as warm.
Yeah a small detail with that arch, but makes a great difference 👌
The colors were calming. Perfect for a busy city
Strangely the interior gave me a sense of nostalgia, it has this 50 60s feeling of old Hong Kong.
I love the way this guy is talking and explaining. I felt like I took a short class :)
Anyone else follow this channel to get a sense of calm? Relaxes the eyes and soothes the ears.
Always. Super chill music. Beautiful spaces. It's just a great vibe.
Yes :)
I feel you
I use it as ASMR. 🙂
I love this Chanel! Makes you want to find a foreign small apt and do something cool..
That is the best way to hide an air conditioner! Genius
But when i think about regular maintenance... no
seven henson why? it obviously can be opened.
@@sevenhenson3926 What regular maintenance? You clean the filter one per season which is a 10 minute job, this wouldn't slow you down at all
@@pemuda7075 if it leaks, he is screwed.
which part of the video was it? havent noticed.
this is THE PRETTIEST apartment i've ever seen! i'm in love! i would absolutely adore living in a place like this.
This apartement is soooooo beautiful. There is absolutely nothing intrusive. This is a silent Beauty. I love Wabi-Sabi.
By many international standards, 52 m² are not small.
And when you keep in mind a part of Hong Kong's population lives in closets and cages (do your research if you don't believe me), you can call this apartment a mansion.
That said, it is a nice interior.
Actually the cage things and even just flats subdivided in any way are illegal and therefore not very common.
@@jinpingthebear110 as a hong konger i can tell u that sub-divided flats in hk are very common. even though it’s illegal, people still live in them coz they are rly poor. the rent of a mere 100 square feet ‘room’ can be up to 4000 hkd, but it’s relatively cheap compared to normal flats.
The show is based out of Australia. Australia has one of the largest average home sizes in the world.
@@jinpingthebear110 "Illegal" does not lead to "not common". "Illegal" just means there's such a law, but it's a law that's not really enforced because the majority of these cage/subdivided flat residents are not living in them by choice.
@@thsscapi Around 3% of HK's population are estimated to live in subdivided flats. If you consider that common, ok.
This is beautiful.
He described his home effortlessly and with so much love. I love the style and color choices. 💕
I'm always furious whenever I hear someone's claiming that he/she is a designer while they clearly don't have a designer's mind. But here Mr. Wong claims that he's not a designer while he's got a mind of one! I love his humbleness.
15-20 seconds into watching this video, I realized the owner/designer lives a few floors above me in the SAME building, even the same unit!!!! What a pleasant surprise as I have been a subscriber to this channel for a while given tiny living spaces here in HK. Love the wabi-sabi design!
"Home is a manifestation of one's habits and needs." ❤️

My habits must be collecting clutter..
I really love how never too small present these apartments as masterpiece..
This looks so good. I love the consistent use of light brown, khaki and cream color being used throughout the space, give the house a coherent theme. Very inspiring and looks minimalist without the borderline of being boring like some other simplistic approaches I've seen before. Definitely got the earthy looks that the owner trying to achieve. I feel calm watching his house. Easily one of my fav :D
I really love this apartment, as well as this guy. Somehow it makes me very happy to hear him talk about his home.
this is the best one I've ever seen. he made everything look so beautiful and effortless.
Agree. Stunning
Such beautiful design! That man knew what he was doing. I could totally see myself living there 🙂 he made a lot of really fantastic design choices. Kudos to him!
Beautiful. He may not think he’s a designer but he certainly is and a very good one. Calming sanctuary. Even the way the sheers hang in the windows, everything is very refined. Well done.
This is amazing, so well thought out, and perfectly tailored to suit Desmond's needs. And the fact that he isn't a designer just adds wonder and amazement to his incredible design.
Thank you for your comment and view, trust me I don't take them for granted. I recommend you to Mr Brandon to start making millions in ..🅱️..T..C

"I'm not a designer" well, _could've fooled me_ that apartment looks amazing...
Love the calm color. The taller ceilings, large window and glass door really would help for me to feel comfortable. The arch and partly open ac storage above closet is the charm here. Brave to remove a bedroom but often is the best choice. Really nice. And well explained.👏💕
the colour palette is just so beautiful and tranquil. love the living room set up, and the storage around the windows in the bedroom. Genius idea of putting a piece of quartz on top of the storage and make it an office table!
I love how subtle and calming everything is, but with custom details like the arched doors and the feature wall it still feels very unique. He made all the right decisions with the new lay-out and design of this space.
This is probably my favourite one on the whole channel so far to be honest.
I would love to live here. What a wonderful apartment.
Just spectacular. If the sofa had a slightly higher back and there were some personally chosen artworks on the wall, this would be near perfection.
I’m with you on the higher-backed couch. I feel I can never sit comfortably on these low-back styles.
I love his accent and voice - so calming and elegant, just like his flat. Really peaceful, such a contrast from the world outside its walls.
A simple work of art and the fact that he designed this without being an actual designer makes it all the more a masterpiece 🖤
If it is in hk, it is not small, it is a mansion lol
Same sentiments.
Probably costs as much as a small fully operational Death Star though
As a Southern American, this is truly tiny living, but so beautifully done.
It's not tiny in HK standard, this is only affordable only to the top 1%.
As a Northen European, this is quite average. 😊
@@coreywong I know Hong Kong prices are crazy high but dang.
It's unbelievable how big & spacious the living are looks, compared to the old photos. ♡
And the style is absolutely beautiful! The colours, shapes, materials & furniture, perfect! ☆
But not only that, it's all practical & senseful aswell! And btw. I love the kitchen!!
Maybe my most favourite episode of NTS. HE'S A GENIUS!
"Home is a manifestations of one's habits and needs"..... this is what it is all about!
What a tranquil and spacious appartment. I love it.
he is a rich man ,
he can afford the 5xx sqt apartment in sai yang puun 西環
I'm from hong kong
This apartment is so beautiful , peaceful and inviting. I think he has done an amazing job making the space feel a lot bigger. I see a lot of comments about it not being small for Hong Kong, but regardless he has made it feel bigger than many an apartment I've seen at twice the size. The bathroom is beautiful and peaceful too and I love the arches and the way they w ho throughout the place. I would never have blocked up part of a window but it works so well. And the storage and grill above it are super. Hats off to him..
I wouldn’t change a single thing in this apartment, it’s perfection.
This is a palace by Hong Kong standards, great result.
I would creep myself out sleeping right in front of mirror. Imagine, you wake up from your sleep in the middle of the night and first thing you notice is that someone else is also sleeping opposite you.
For some of us, that is our objective...
I was surprised at that as well. It's a relatively well-known superstition in Chinese culture not to have the mirror opposite the bed. But, the mirror does open up the space.
My bedroom has this - the wall by my bed is all mirror. You learn to ignore it, or just prop your pillow up to block. It still brings a lot of light and space into a room.
Yes, I thought the same thing, though as I also live in HK I accept that there are practical constraints.
Yess i really don't like that, my quality and quantity of sleep is already bad..
Love this space. So peaceful and soothing . The arches add just enough detail to make the space interesting , not bland at all.
Just looking at this flat made all my tension melt away. He created such a serene, beautiful, functional space. This man definitely has the eye of an interior designer even if he makes more money doing something else.
This is not small at all anywhere in the world, let alone in HK. That being said, it looks really good and seems cozy and feels very welcoming !! Love the neutral but warm tones !
Don't be silly. Of course it's small for some places. Some rural and suburban homes are located in places with sprawling land an cheap building costs, out in the Midwest.
@@mariebernier3076 i mean 52 sqm for a single person just can't be considered small, how much space do you need ??! Ofc I was mostly talking about big cities but still
@@mariebernier3076 we talking about apartments....not houses....very very different even tho both are used for living in.
@@willblack8575 gotcha, thanks for the input.
@@adam____________ true! My place in Brooklyn NY is 850 sqft but last quarantine year found I only wanted to work and live in an L-shaped room, 11x20 +8x10 ft. Haven't entered the hallway or bedroom for months, no need. I'd prefer a 25' diameter geodesic dome in the forest with a wood stove or a yurt in some meadow.
faultless taste. an absolute oasis. I love everything about it.
Everything about this apartment is amazing, but that kitchen is just gorgeous. Too many of these go entirely open concept when in a small apartment, separating the kitchen can make it feel much more comfortable
I am in LOVE with the arched doorways, and the green tile + bronze fittings in the bathroom are so beautiful. A lot of comments have already said this but he succeeded so well in his mission to create a calm space - it's such a soothing palette, layout, design, and textural space. I don't think we got the full effect of the texture wallpaper on the storage doors in the living room but I can imagine how much warmth and interest they add without making the space busy or crowded with color. The arched doorways are just genius, bringing in a real old European alleys/Greek Mediterranean vibe into a modern space. So awesome - one of my fave episodes so far on NTS!
I'm in love with this already 😭😍
@Erratum oh no u won't. My job doesn't allow me to have that much luxury
😐 I'm unluckily confined to a store room😭😂
👍🏼 Great details and very practical! Undoubtedly "big" for HK! Getting stuff off the floor makes it easy to keep clean!
That is one organized, talented young man. Beautiful apartment.
This is so peaceful and well thought out. While small, it doesn’t feel small. Good use of the space, high ceilings, architectural details and a soft monotone color palette make this a calm, beautiful haven. I love this.
This was pure eye candy. Can't wait to have my own unit that's as personalized and calm as this one!
It's absolutely amazing how much thought and effort goes into creating the perfect living space!
i love the calmness of the design, and also that the owner explained the purpose of his choices!
His apartment is just perfect. i like the balcony the most, it's facing the ocean, looking through 2 buildings. It's just beautiful
For me one of the best apartments in big cities on this channel - Bravo!
Stunning apartment. My new favorite on this channel. I like how the designer focused on his own needs. The wood pieces hiding storage space and the AC are incredibly well chosen!
The arched door frames are such a beautiful touch - definitely achieves the intended purpose of harmony
This is my favourite place I’ve seen on here. It has such a lovely and calm feel to it.
I think this is my favourite home here so far!! I feel like this is minimalist done right!!
Wow, this has to be one of my favorites! Every single detail is so well thought through. Love it.
I just love how clean and soft it looks.
i am inlooove with how he utilized the space and made it look calm and elegant. those arches. ugh
Love the layout of this apartment and choice of colors brings coziness inside. Love it all.
this is the most calming apartment i've ever seen, i dream of having a place like this one day
strong contrast from city is right! this is wonderful. A place to BE STILL
the owner tells about it with such a grace and understanding of what home and space we are living and its importance! i am delighted!
Omg 😍😍😍😍😍 i love it ! The colour and space is perfection
Hey, if you can show more 2 bedroom small apartment that would be great! Bcs some young adult now have kids who need their own space!
Love the neutral tones and arches. Furniture choices make a lot of sense too- really does leave it open and airy
I'm just COMPLETELY in love with this apartment ♡ the colors, the aesthetic... everything is perfect!
Looks pretty large to me compared to what HongKong usually has!.

Love the tranquility of the space. By the way the store/ cafe in 1:03 has a beautiful facade with the curved window and the colors.
This flat is so relaxing! He's done a great job, designing and furnishing it. Absolutely love it!
Gorgeous. Desmond is extremely talented.
Sir, you might not be a designer but you could really consider being one! What a beautiful apartment 😌✨
This is my dream apartment if I ever had one.
This is one of the very few apartments in HK that I like. It’s so bright and spacious without those floor storage or ceiling hanging cabinets. The color choices are also very smart. Less is more.
What a beautiful home. Combined with important tips for any design process. He's definitely a designer in every way that matters.
Wow! The design fits this channel “s name perfectly. When the ideology and design applied effectively, small place looks spacious and comfortable. You don’t feel it “s too small to live in. I love to stay in this unit, even though it is just 500 sf. Love it ❤️ 😍
My absolute favorite episode yet. "Home is a manifestation of one's habits and needs. It is important to examine how you live; what works and doesn't work for you before the design process..." -- this feels like a perfect NTS summary and such an inspiring quote. Desmond Wong, incredible and amazing work. I have nothing but admiration for you! When will you design something else? I want to see!
Hello Laura 👋😊
The most beautiful interior I’ve ever seen.
I so appreciate what you said about thinking through ones needs and habits prior to design. So smart and so thoughtful. Thank you!!
Please do more videos specifically on Hong Kong!
Baller of a guy.. probably the most expensive apartment featured.
oh wow this has to be one of the best ones ive seen! i love the whole design, the colors, the plants and decorations, the furniture and it's functionality, it feels like such a relaxing place... even the little balcony is such an amazing touch with that bench and view... i just love everything about this apartment!! shows how important design is when it comes to smaller places. i live in a 60~sqm apartment and it feels so crowded with 2 huge hallways for no good reason and 3 small rooms (all square, same size) and the balcony is long and narrow so it can barely fit a chair... some people just don't put effort in designing useful places but this man made his apartment stunning!
Mr. Wong, thank you for the tour of your beautiful, calm, and well-thought out home. It was inspirational and calming. Hong Kong is lucky to have you.
For HK, this is huge! Even for a normal apartment elsewhere, this is not small. Really nice interior design though.
As much as I LOVE the design and warm rice colour tone used, it is a DAMN BIG apartment in Hong Kong standard or internationally ESPECIALLY for one person. Though the modification of storage room joining living space behind the sofa is a very nice idea.
i love how he has a meaningful reason behind every design decision that he made
My favorite of all I have seen in this channel. Love the neutral pallet used & minimal decor. Well done to the designer!
