- In this video, I address why now is the time we like to take elderberry cuttings in an attempt to propagate more plants for next year. I demonstrate how we cut and place each cutting. We also look at last year's efforts and how they did.

Hi there.
Here in Scotland 🏴 we have Elderberry Bushes all over the place. My Bees and local Butterflies & other Pollinators love the dreamy White Flowers.
Tip:
Elderberry are almost the earliest 'wild bush' to green up with new leaf shoots, say late January and early February.
(I personally wouldn't plant Cuttings :Stems off a Bush like you did in December !?!
Wait until those 'buds' are just about to Sprout, then grow them on as Cuttings in your Garden or Yard.
Add stem lengths of say x6 to x8 inches long,
remembering 'buds' point 'upwards' (Top!)
Get your Snipper Blade and deep Scratch 'the lower end bark' away up the stem : bit like making wood shaving, so these scratched areas stick out like 'faux roots'.
Add these into a bucket of Water for x24hrs. Then poke a deep hole with a Stick/Rod then add these stems right into these holes, so more Stem is below ground : say x2 Shoots above ground. Heel them in good with your Boot. Water them in well.
You should have good Bush Shrubs say by May or June. 👍
Here in Scotland we make "Elderberry Ice-cream" by getting some "Flowers" washed gently. Add to a Pan. Add a good amount of Double (Thick) Cream. Warm this up to before a Boil (Dont Boil !) Allow to cool, add Powdered Sugar and some Vanilla Essence if liked (optional.) Then add this Sieved Cream
to a Stand Mixer and Whip until "Fluffy".
Add to an Ex Ice-Cream Tub and Freeze for a few Days.
Then enjoy the taste of sunny 'Summer' through the taste of those gorgeous Elderberry Flower's.
We also make Elderberry Cordial. Flower 'Infused' flavoured (Sugar) Syrup.
Some call this lovely drink "Elderberry Champagne".
Add a dash of EB Syrup to a Glass, add Sparkling Water to Dilute it, to taste & enjoy ! 😎
I bought 5 from a local nursery here in NC and then I started seeing native elderberry bushes everywhere! I know a spot that gets mowed down every year by the state and noticed how fast it recovers every year so I am getting a big branch from that one to get cuttings from. It is in a deep culvert at a side road off a main highway so now is a good time to get it since I won't have to worry about snakes.

That's what happened to my gooseberries.
As my dear sister-in-law always says you have to have enough for the birds and you. LOL. She actually planted 700 blueberry bushes years ago and she does have the best tasting blueberries!!d And LOTS of them.

Its's awesome where you're petting the pig. She loves it !! & she's very friendly. I've heard pigs are very intelligent & make good pets. Of course, her roll in life is not to be a pet .......
They are very similar to dogs lol super smart. We had a pot bellied pig that was raised with our dogs and she'd fetch sticks, bark like a dog and was such a joy to have they're funny creatures and can be very loving lol.
I now know why my cuttings didn't take. I didn't have that branch node on top. I'll give it another try this coming season. I'll have to look for the white flowers in the spring. Good video.

I can't believe I have not stumbled onto your channel before now ! I am a grower ,also in WVa. I am in Belington in the middle of the state. I grow nursery stock as well as fruit . Elder is way under used in this country , Good to see you establishing more !!

I just bought 10 cuttings on eBay to plant this fall and hopefully I'll get a couple plants from them.I'm soaking them overnight and planting them tomorrow in a bed where they'll get plenty of indirect light but will be sheltered from the wind.I love elderberries!

Thanks, Troy. I keep hearing about the benefits of elderberries. Now I think I'll try to grow some. First I wasn't sure if it is hardy for my area - zone 5 , but I see that most varieties are. Yay! Can't wait to try growing my own elderberry bushes. I think your chickens will love it if you plant some in their run.
They can take a deep long Frost no problem. 👍
My favourite Elder drink is the sparkling flower wine we make in England, on the taste side it is not at all like the cats pee smelling flowers in July, that can get so bad it will make you close your windows on a hot humid London night. I also learnt that Swedish people are amazed we do not eat the young elder leaves in salad, especially when you consider how well it grows here, and the red variety produces a berry with a strong almost raspberry like flavour although it's not native to England it grows well here.
I will try your cutting method on a red one in my neighbours garden.

@@peggypastime1278 I've never tried em mind; I keep saying to myself every summer, I eat the young vine leaves and the older ones I use as a herb for flavouring, and they are a lot tougher.
@@petrosros Do the leaves have a sweet flavoring? So you'd flavor just drinks? I'll have to try it
@@peggypastime1278 The Elder leaves are used as salad leaf, as for the vine leaves I use them like a bay leaf and don't try to eat the old ones, but they are very good at flavouring especially Greek style lemon potatoes and roast \chicken

Yes, you can plant it now. If you cut from it, make sure you have at least one branch node on the cutting. Preferably on the top. I detail that in the video. Thanks for joining us!
So far I bought twice elder berry cutting and none of those didn't grow. So couple of days ago I pulled out one of the cutting and I saw tall tap roots. I am just thinking that those cutting it does not have any notes.

The chickens will dig your root systems up on your elderberries. Tried this one year and had to fence them out of the elderberries before they killed them all. :(
We will have to put some wire down around the base. Did this with comfrey.

hi, can I cross pollinate american elderberry with another variety? or does it need to be another American elderberry. I am simply planting another elderberry for for more berries. What would you suggest for a second elderberry variety for more blooms and berries?
Cross pollination is beneficial to all elderberries
I found some wild elderberry trees in mid fall, (October) in Eastern Washington, I took some cuttings but none rooted, except one branch I did nothing with except to put into a half gallon milk jug full of water, it is now covered with buds, but n roots on the branch, do I cut the buds up into separate buds and plant, or plant the branch hoping it will grow roots? You need to get some roots established. Place it in some good potting soil and keep the soil moist.

You need to have a segment section at the base and one at the top.
