  • When Suthi and Sanjay Nagar moved to Austin from Pasadena, Suthi wanted more than lawn in their small front yard. New to Texas and new to gardening, she got involved with the Austin Permaculture Guild to guide her resourceful path. By stacking functions-beauty, edible, wildlife habitat, medicinal, waterwise-now their garden’s a lively spot and a friendly neighborhood connection.

I have a family of Bumblebees living in a wooden swing on our front porch. They moved in about 5 years ago. My wife was terrified and wanted to destroy them! I insisted we give them a chance. Well, they have been great neighbors, and we can even swing without them bothering us.

Beautiful garden! I hope it inspires many people to turn their lawn into something like that!

The garden is really beautiful. I like to grow very dense as well to maximize the plant space. Step stones help that you can reach the plants in the back.

That's pretty neat , I like your ideas about nature and preserving habitat... myself I'm fasinated with those big ol bumblebees, I like to watch them and take pics when you can get them to stay still.

I've had the same experience in Austin with the big red wasps. The ones in my yard are definitely not aggressive. They seem pretty unconcerned with us for the most part, except they actually LOVE our bird bath and wait patiently for us to refill it in the summertime. I plan on making them their own separate watering station this summer with rocks to keep them from drowning like she describes, and to keep this second one from being splashed in and dirtied by the birds.

This is totally awesome. How do you grow Moringa tree outside during winter? I thought Moringa tree is not frost hardy? I am in Arkansas, zone 7b.

any solutions if there is a huge oak tree in front of the house? the leaves fall every year and its a chore to rake, i use it for mulch but it smothers the plants and grass below.

Beautiful garden and great for our pollinator friends. The medicinal mumbo-jumbo is just silly...but it's ok.

Permaculture. There are permaculture groups everywhere to teach classes. In Austin, it's the Austin Permaculture Guild.
