Georgia Traverse Trail Overland Route

  • We travel the Georgia Traverse overland route through the Chattahoochee National Forest. We talk a little about road closures, the Gaia Map App, and show you the road conditions, closures, and difficulty you can expect if you're planning a trip there.
    The trail has enough to keep a seasoned offroader happy, yet can still be traveled in most vehicles with above average ground clearance. It offers some of the best dispersed camping options we've seen anywhere. Although it gives incredible solitude and remoteness, civilization and the immensities it provides is seldom more than an hour's drive away. A great example of Southeast Overlanding! Have you ever wondered about; are there any overland trails near me? This may be your answer.

    Coming from someone who has worked outdoors in GA for 20+ years, I am still confused about roads being closed during the summer due to rain/mud? Our wet season is the winter and early spring. Obviously we get some rain in the summer but generally the heat evaporates and dries it real quick. I'm a superintendent for a grading/pipeline company and in the industry they always factor in more time and much more "rain days" in the winter. No one wants to start grading (dirt moving) projects in winter because it's always wet and never dried out between wet periods. Not saying I know it all, just saying this is backwards for someone who's entire job hinges on dirt/soil not being too wet. Moisture content of soil and weather is my #1 challenge

      @noonetalksaboutaaroncarter Před 3 lety +1

      Let's be honest, CONF FS sucks at trail maintaining. They prefer to just close off roads. Upper Chatt has been "temporarily" closed for FOUR yrs now due to the tornado in March 2017

  • @noonetalksaboutaaroncarter

    FYI, USFS in N GA did NO road maintaining in 2020 and so far in 2021. Check the USFS websites - they update ALL road closures including maps - including closures due to prescribed burns which are rarely announced more than 48-72hrs in advance.

    I was on trey mountain and Helton Falls probably a day before, after, or the actual day you were there. I got the rain as well, and it hasnt really rained since. Thanks for respecting the road closed sign on Chimney Mountain. There isnt a gate so people run it anyways. Rangers put game cameras up to give tickets. $$$$. Fun road and great camp sites. I'm up there 4-5 times year. Its mindblowing in the snow. Planning a 3 day trip first week of November for the leaves. • @WanderlostOverland
      @WanderlostOverland  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for watching! We didn't air down too much, only to 25psi. Mostly just to give us a smoother ride on the rocks and gravel. When we came out on pavement we drove under 45 and were careful cornering so we didn't heat them up too much.

      Live on the coast and drive on the beach a lot. At 25psi you are good to go and will probably not be able to tell. I travel about 7 miles to the beach road and no problem. Speeds under 55 and no sports car driving. At around 20 or less you will definitely notice. I just drive a little slower at 20psi and take it easy.

    I was born and raised in Georgia, and Helen use to be a small german town with authentic german food and items you could not get any where else, only people in Georgia really knew about it. In the past years it has modernized and lost its charm and has become a tourist trap unfortunately. Last time I went, some of the old german styles buildings were still there, but different shops moved in and it just was not the same.
