ओर उनको राष्ट्रपति बनाने में मुख्य प्रस्तावक चंद्रबाबू नायडू और माननीय मुलायम सिंह यादव थे । जिन्होंने उनका नाम आगे रखा था। तत्कालीन भाजपा सरकार कलाम जैसी शख्सियत के सामने कोई विकल्प नही तलाश पायी लेकिन वाम लोकतांत्रिक मोर्चा (लेफ्ट) उनके विपक्ष में अपनी महिला उम्मीदवार को खड़ा कर दिया जिन्हें 9 गुना वोटो से हरा के अति सम्माननीय मिसाइल मैन कलाम साहब राष्ट्पति बने।
