It was my great privilige to live in Hilo, HI and work at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo as the Executive Director of Career & Academic Advising for 13-years (2001-2014). My wife and I loved living in Hilo, and I loved working with the students, faculty, and staff at UHH. It is one of the most diverse student bodies university in the United States of America. The diversity of our students was reflected in the Faculty and Staff as well. The Spirit of Aloha pervades the campus and the community. At UHH, diversity includes not only racial, ethnic & cultural diversity, but diversity of thought and beliefs as well. I am a conservative, Republican, retired officer of Marines, and made no secret of my beliefs and affiliations yet I was granted tenure and twice promoted by my faculty colleagues. Downside of living in Hilo: It is a tropical rain forest so it rains almost every day -- but the sun shines almost every day as well! :) Food & clothing are about 50% more expensive than on the U.S. Mainland due to shipping costs, but local produce is reasonably priced; housing is more expensive than many places in the Continental United States, but cheaper than places like, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., and similar cities/counties. We bought a house with an ocean view for $185K in 2001 and sold it in 2014 for $300,000 -- you can not find a home with an ocean view in California for either price. Aloha: Alo (the presence of) Ha (the breath of God which gives us life) = I recognize in you the same breath of God that gave me life - thereforem, I *shall* treat you with respect & love.

@@terencehuang3616 Hilo is a wonderful small town and the University produces theatre & musical events that you would not normally find in such a small place. // Unrelated to the University, the largest event of the year is The Merry Monarch (Hula) Festival. It brings Halau hula from all over the world to the hula competition. It is always the week after Easter. You cannot find a vacant hotel room or rental car in the entire area. One downside that I did not mention in my post is the very limited medical facilities & doctors on the island. Any major procedure requires an airline flight to O'ahu.

      Norman: thanks
I saw some comments about drug and safety concerns. It is comparable, better or worse than average in US land towns??
      Thanks for your reply

@@terencehuang3616 very little drug abuse in Hilo itself (other than marijuana). In Puna & Ka'u there was a lot of Meth/Ice use.

Grad to hear that and it makes sense. The housing price is about 20 to 30% more expensive than southern area( but still reasonable )
      Appreciate your reply
      Many thanks

Dude, UH Hilo looks 1000x better than UH Maona. I'm a UH Manoa alumni & UH Manoa is a dump. UH Hilo looks like a much, much better school.

To be fair, most campus tours only show the good parts and the cleanest of the classrooms and leave out all the dirty places. Its hard to find a clean maintenance college, the advantage is that this is a smaller school than Manoa so it’s easier to keep track but I don’t know.

Why are we just assuming "diversity" is a good thing? Who is it good for?

its good for americans(i mean the continent) we arent a nation like in europe or asia we are all immigrants it is fine if you say china for the chinese or poland for the polish but America for the Americans doesn,t work as well
