  • In this video, I have compared the 4 different vegetable-tanned tooling leathers we carry.
    1 Hermann Oak
    2 Wickett & Craig
    3 Sepici
    4 Texas Oak
Each of these are great leathers and tool, oil, dye, and antique wonderfully. The rest of the details are in the video.

Explains a whole lot about why I am not seeing on my projects that burnish that I am seeing on CZcams! Understanding that alone increases my confidence, and I hope that these kinds of videos can keep being pushed out for other aspects of leatherworking!

Great video Aaron. Herman Oak panels is what I first used to make things, which was a blessing and a curse lol. Wickett and Craig and Herman Oak burnish so nice. I have tried some Italian leathers that were nice looking but still didn't burnish as nice as those two brands.

I bought some of the live oak from traditions because I am new to leatherwork and didn’t want to throw away Herman oak when I messed up. I love the live oak or Texas oak. It is so good to work with. Been trying to stock up on it so I got a couple double shoulders of each weight. Glad to know there is another place that is selling it now.

It's always a fun discussion about how our American leather has brands scraps and scars not seen in import leather .. We just RE registered our brand . As a leather worker I always think man some one will buy this hide and make a project with our brand on it someday . Stay Safe and have a Happy New Year . See y'all in Prescott.

Thank you for the comparison. I am new to leather craft and found it very informative. You touched on something briefly that I've noticed with my leather. It appears to be drying out and becoming more difficult to get a clean cut on the flesh side. I have resorted to dampening the flesh side slightly before cutting to improve the cut. Is this ok? I'd hate to toss the leather out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I enjoy your videos and find them very helpful.

How do you get the burnishing look on the decorative cuts??? Thanks for this video. I've always felt the type of leather made a big difference on the burnishing but others insisted I was doing something wrong.

Awesome video Aaron, thank you. The only thing you missed was the relative stiffness of the Texas oak. Good for holsters?
