This final was the one Ole Olsen should have won...fastest rider on show by far...

I can't help but wonder if Persson got a back hander from someone when it came to his participation in World Finals. In 1967, with four riders in contention to for the championship. Persson rode straight into Ivan Mauger in one of the heats and caused a restart with Mauger hampered by a bent rear frame of his bike. Then, in a race not shown in this video, he rode straight into Briggs and caused a crash that may very well have cost Briggs a fifth world title, not to mention the loss of a finger. It makes me wonder.

He was always a dirty rider, no back handers needed. It certainly did lose Barry his fifth title. At that time nobody was beating Barry and his bike was going faster that night than anybodies. There was 81,000 fans there that night and all the fans I spoke to from different countries thought that he was going to win before the meeting started he was so hot.

Barry was so much quicker than anybody at that time, as well as on the night. If Persson had won it, it would have been the greatest insult to speedway ever. I would never have gone to another speedway meeting if he had.

The commentary sounds it’s from 1920s radio but I remember some of these riders from the mid 70s lol

Never realised Bernie person was so close to winning a world title.

Only because he was a bloody dirty rider, he was not that good and definately not good enough to be world champion. I was there and he never even went to see how Barry was. I would have banned him for life if I could have that night, he never got any better either. Possibly the most hated speedway rider with British Commonwealth fans.
