    If you read the manual from the k5 with usb-c port, you will notice that the factory does not recommend using the usb charging port. Except for emergency situations. Why? There is no security circuit for save charging. It will charge the battery but if something goes wrong, you are in a world of hurt. Now with the smaller battery this will not happen as quick, but with the bigger (and stronger) battery, the factory decided to delete the port altogether, just to prevent things from blowing up. So it is no downgrade, it is a safety precaution! The usb charging port is only ment to be used if you really have to!
    It's all in the manual...

    Great video you can use a small pair of long nose pliers, to remove and refit the antenna ring

    I've taken apart mine before seeing you video, you don't need to remove the brass ring. For the missing USB, it could be a reason that there's no protection in the battery pack, however it's really just a few cents to put a small protection circuit in a battery pack next to the two 18650 batteries. It's a shame they cheaped out on this.

    @dlinnoedlinnoe Před 10 měsíci +3

    I've seen somewhere on youtube that it's actually two 18650 batteries there (and so the capacity is rather 2200 mAh or so). Maybe you can try to disassemble the battery block and check it. And yeah, that's a pity that they didn't implement a usb-c charger port there :(

    i have one of the uvk6 orange screen ones that has the usb charging i checked the instructions and it adviser's to use the usb charging port for emergency charging and do the bulk of charging using the desktop charger .
    been using it to listen to the repeater on the ISS when it is in range ( i got it on your recommendation)

    Possible explanation of the missing usb charger: the big battery packs have 2 x 18650 inside, which in contrast to the flat batteries dont have an internal protect board, and the usb charger might not have the same safety features as the cradle chargers. The charger itself will not suffer from charging the bigger battery because it is constant current and doesn't care about the capacity, it would just take longer. Other issues with these cheap radios is that the battery connectors are permanently under voltage which should not, and if i'm not wrong, it is also compulsory since a couple of years that battery packs and chargers have 3 contacts instead of 2, mayne not in all countries though.

    I wonder if it's just the connector they left off, or all the components. The connector footprint is there, so you could solder one on is you want.
    You can use needle-nose pliers to get those rings off. If you use the bent ones, it's even easier.

    When developing, the connector mounting nut does not need to be unscrewed. The connector is rigidly attached to the chassis. 73

    I have one of these on order from AliExpress
    Looking at the specifications from different suppliers, not ONE has USB charging mentioned, which for me is a big selling point, like the earlier model which I like. If the radio I ordered about two weeks ago arrives with no USB Jack, it's going straight back. It's a big problem I see with Chinese sellers, one never quite knows whether what you ordered is what arrives at your door.

      @@HamTechRadioScannerDrones Andreas. I bought a spare battery for my UV-5R plus from Aliexpress. I was pleasantly surprised to find a USB charging socket on it! The battery was higher capacity too: 2600 mah more than supplied. made to fit, no cutting off bits in of it.

    it looks like you could solder the usb-c on, im getting mine soon for only £12! and if its just the usb-c missing i think itll be a easy add-on, if i could see the other side of the board that would be a big help

    Next, would be to take the motherboard out of the radio aluminium frame, and see if there is a charging circuit to install USB-C in it. 73´s

      @@HamTechRadioScannerDrones No need to be scared, unsolder wires from the speaker, remove screws from the board, and "voila" you have the other side of the board. You can compare both radios in that area, probably they are similar.

      Hi, I've opened it and there is missing as well as the charger circuit, one IC plus a couple of capacitors and resistors. Also, I'm not sure if it is a good idea charge the big battery on the no plus radio through the USB because probably the charger IC maybe overheat and can fries because more charging current.

    • @ct1emj
      @ct1emj Před rokem +1

      @@M0KZA for the normal battery I believe that is no problem, if we can get hold of the schematics or a UV-6 and compare the board, I believe that we can install componets and it will work.

    The battery itself should have had a charge-port, like on the radtel 470x.
    Edit: i found that there are replacement batteries avaliable that has usb-c charhing. So not really a problem.

    The UV-5R PLUS is the first on e of this type of radio I owned, so I was unaware that predecessors might've had a USB charger port. Are there pads for the USB port? Any reason to believe we can't solder one in?

    Why don't you use a needle-nose pliers to loosen, or lock up again the "antenna' nut? Insert the top of the "needels" into the grooves of the nut, and slowly turn the pliers, ... ! It works wonderfull for me.

    When I saw Quansheng UV-5R thought this must be some kind of mistake. But No... tis true. Surprisingly they have the same name as the ubiquitous Baofeng UV-5R How do they get away with it. I purchased Quansheng UV-K5 on the basis it had AM aircraft reception. Was disappointed as is very poor, barely audible AM The small buttons are very fiddley, and one has to keep pressing the shift key for basic functions. Not impressed. Stick with the Baofeng. The newer Baofeng BF-5RH/UV-5RH has excellent AM reception.
