If possible, try to get a trimmer such as the Andis T-Outliner for a sharper line up overall. However, if that's not an option for you, then it's better to use the clipper closed and be cautious as the closed mode cuts more hair off/creates sharper lines than the clipper open.

When you say close the 1 & a half do you mean gradually close it and work down or just close it all the way and flick at the line.
I close it all the way and use the corner of the blade

Cutting your own is much harder bro, your arm doesn’t have to move in weird positions when cutting someone else’s hair, you’ll get there eventually💪🏼
