  • Its been just over five years since the last time I was able to catch the East Penn Operation on the Bustleton Branch in Northeast Philadelphia, but with a Friday off and nothing else to do, I took a ride down on the chilly and wet morning of Friday January 26th, 2024, to see if they'd run. The NE Philly operation receives and ships their cars out via CSAO FJ-02, which enters the Bustleton Branch at Holmesburg Junction and interchanges cars at Grant Avenue, with East Penn delivering inbound cars to their customer at Morano Trucking, off Blue Grass Road. While operations are slower than they were years ago, the line still runs, using old reliable former Conrail SW900 8635, which in its rusted, tagged coat of old blue paint, still sounds and looks good as it gets the job done. With only one inbound car for Morano, the NE-26 crew made quick work as they rolled out to Grant Avenue to pick-up their inbound car and deliver it. The East Penn portion of the Bustleton Branch is accessed via switch back off grant avenue, where the line follows between Grant Avenue and Northeast Philadelphia Airport and offers a few opportunities for shots. Enjoy the video!

Considering that this locomotive was likely last painted in the early 80s its paint has actually held up well. I agree with the others, I want to see it get a fresh coat of Conrail blue with its can-opener and "Conrail" decals touched up too. I used to see Conrail switchers in Palmyra and Camden growing up so I have a fondness for them. They are something special and I supported financially the cosmetic restoration of multiple Conrail cars and the loco at the Baltimore Railroad Museum. I am glad I subbed this channel years ago, so many cool videos.

I’d definitely agree with ya! Other than the sticker from its time at Allied Tube at the other end of the branch along the airport, it’s totally old school Conrail. It would be crazy seeing it in a refreshed coat of Conrail blue but I have a feeling she’ll spend the rest of her days looking the way she does. I can only imagine seeing blue switchers down the modern day RiverLine over there, very cool! I appreciate you watching my videos and the kind words! That means a lot! Plenty more coming!

No prob. Thanks for recording railroad history for posterity. Maybe someday I will have an article I am writing about the Riverline during Conrail finished. It was a fun secondary track to railfan and I lived a few blocks from it as a kid. We would walk down to the tracks from time to time and wave to the crews working out of Camden and get a horn show in return. Conrail people are great.@@trainutjob

Thank you for sharing. The poor horn on that locomotive needs to be taken off life support and replaced however.

They’re very tricky, as required, I’ve had good luck on Friday mornings.
