At one point, most of Scotland spoke Gaelic, its where the kilts, pipes come from, where the culture came from, the och's and ayes. Yes Britons (Welsh speaking/culture) were all over, hence the name Britain, were in Strathclyde and south of the Forth or south of the Antonine Wall. Of course there have been human movement/disporia from various creeds and dna types for millennia. However, the Scots (scotti) came from Ireland and combined with Picts (possibly absorbed into Gaelic culture), formed the basis of Scotland. Edward I, also known as Edward Longshanks and the Hammer of the Scots, was King of England from 1272 to 1307. After the disastrous Battle of Dunbar in April 1296, the Scottish revolt against England stalled for more than a year until a rebel force led by Andrew de Moray and William Wallace rekindled the flames of rebellion with a stunning victory over the English at Stirling Bridge. The impact of that battle induced King Edward I, known as “Longshanks” for his extraordinary height, to return from France to deal with the fractious Scots. After assembling a huge army, Edward marched north on his second invasion of Scotland in two years

This win ment that Engerland would never be able to conquer scotland militarly. One COULD say scotland took over Engerland via James the 6th? ( some could...I dont)

The 'Flower of Scotland' has been at different times in history, different things, to different people. Generally it is thought that a field of Thistles may have helped our side during one war or another, but nothing is certain about this. However, it's a nice anthem, most people like it sung at the Rugby, at Murryfield. It's also sun by football fans, or at the Commonwealth Games of course. It is not the official National Anthem, we just don't have one at the moment.

The "Flower of Scotland" is about our ancestors standing up against King Edward " Longshanks" and the tyranny he brought upon our land during the English invasion. It is not cheerful, in fact we pay homage to our countrymen & women who stood against this tyrant and defeated the strongest armed forces in the world at this time. It really is a David v Goliath story which as Scots we owe our freedom to these brave men & women. Hope that helps you understand why we're so passionately and fiercely proud.
