RRR ANALYSIS - HOW SS RAJAMOULI DIRECTS ACTION
If you have seen RRR, you know that director SS Rajamouli crafted some of the most spectacular action of recent memory. And yet, no matter how big and epic the action, each of these sequences is grounded in emotion. As Rajamouli himself explains, “The way I operate is on the basis of emotion…I cannot function otherwise.” So, in this video, let’s break down the action scenes in RRR to see what “emotional spectacle” looks like.
One thing SS Rajamouli does in RRR is to plant some of the film’s major story beats inside an action sequence. For example, our introductions to both lead characters are delivered through epic action. Their first meeting is a daring rescue attempt and their falling out is at the center of a chaotic siege. The result is an action scene with real dramatic weight, and the drama is accented by epic action.
Another tactic to create the highest emotional content is to structure the action scene as a self-contained story arc. We can see this in Raju’s introduction - his mission to apprehend a single rioter while battling the rest. By joining Raju on this mission, we share the catharsis of his victory, which leads to a more sympathetic and instant connection.
We can also look at how SS Rajamouli directs action to ensure that the emotional qualities reach the audience. One way this is done is to prioritize visual clarity. Instead of intense camera movement paired with frenetic editing, Rajamouli’s presentations are measured and clear. A technique we see in RRR is speed ramping, which slows down the action, keeps the pacing manageable, and allows for the action beats to register.
This same effect is also with a nice balance of wide shots. Pulling away from the action might be counterintuitive, but wide shots have a distinct benefit - to maintain scene geography. The easiest way to confuse an audience is when they question, “where is everyone in relation to each other”? The emotional foundation will be lost if they can’t follow the action.
RRR is a rather bold piece of action spectacle. But the way SS Rajamouli directs the action, we never lose the emotional connection that runs through the entire film. As Rajamouli proves, action for action’s sake is a missed opportunity for filmmakers to balance spectacle with emotion and create a satisfying and entertaining cinematic experience.

Thank you #Studiobinder for making this video on RRR... SS Rajamouli 🔥💯❤️ we movie lovers are always a ekalavya shisyas to you... ❤️❤️❤️ Can't believe what's happening in the west with RRR ❤️❤️❤️... Our daily routine recently is...wakeup..

The bridge sequence is cool but at the same
time, it also summarizes the whole movie plot. Ram's mission is regarding the country (jumps with a Flag) and Bheem's mission is to save the child from his tribe (jumps to get the child) and in this journey they exchange their missions (exchange of flag and child) and eventually succeed helping each other.
never thought of it, but yeah in a way it works
And even after the exchange, ram comes out of the water which represents Bheema and Bheema comes out of fire which represents Ram, which over all tells us they they at some point would understand each other's mission.
When I first saw the movie, I thought it looked cool but when a CZcams channel explained all that, my respect for Rajamauli got higher and higher
Even rajamouli would not have thought of it in that aspect(lol), but you made a strong point, great observation!

With that said, don’t you think it also called foreshadowing?
RRR was my introduction to Tollywood. Then I saw the two Baahubali films, also directed by Rajamouli, and man, the action scenes this guy is able to make are just so incredible. In the first Bahubali there's a whole battle that feels like Zack Snyder's 300 mixed with Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings, it's the peak of badass action with detailed geography and everything is character driven.
RRR is a telugu film and Rajamouli is a Telugu director it's called tollywood in Indian cinema
it's tollywood my friend, it's better if you can call it TFI-(Telugu Film Industry)

@@karthikchilkuri6343 oh, didn't know about that.
You should watch Eega directed by Ss Rajamouli
Just to let you guys know the last song sequence was not about them celebrating their movie, but it was a tribute to the freedom fighters from different parts of India, they end the movie with consolidating the efforts of these common men and women who are still remembered as national heroes.
Let's not forger its a disgusting far right nationalist movie. Loved it though.

The bridge sequence is my absolute favorite. So much conveyed through action, no dialog till the main characters exchange names. My biggest take away is that none of these action scenes feel "pointless" compared to most hollywood action film. Not just some expense that'll be forgotten in the next 15 minutes when another scene plays out.
MAN after watching this all I wanted to do was go turn on RRR! And I've already seen it THREE times!!
Time for round 4...and 5... and 6!
Was actually hoping you guys will cover RRR. SS Rajamouli has basically perfected the art of action storytelling. Every action scene just grips you because it actually is like a short film in a way. No matter how many times you revisit it, you really feel excited everytime. And what great performances by both the actors to complement the vision of every story and action beat.
I'm sure you haven't seen much movies.

He's great!
When the animals are released, that's the most awesome bad ass scene. Shows how fragile the british control actually was.
Fragile? How
If you know the structure of the enemy you will find the weak points. night, british crowd, animals (because they move unpredictably and are hard to aim and hit), the riles were primitve and slow at that time, the place where malli is. Bheem goal was to cause a distraction using their weak points for a short period while he rescues the girl. but the Raam was distraction even to the for the Bheem, so distractions on both side cancelled each other out. which was the cause of interval otherwise story might have ended right there.
Great shot
@Xyz it's symbolism is what I meant. Imperialist capture territories like the caging of animals. Caged animals are a form of ordered chaos, chaos who's only withheld by the trust placed in the iron and gears used to cage the animal. It gives a person a sense of complete control, although in reality their control hinges on the actual hinges of the cage.
The movie is fictional
No one can beat him the way he designes his interval bang.
True bro .....
Interval bang👍yes
All south indian movies focuses more on Interval bangs with emotions and bgm . No Hollywood movies can beat that impact
@@Vinay-jg7yb few Hollywood movies literally gets stopped at scene for interval. It's really funny
Lots to learn from his filmmaking
One thing you missed, I believe, is the grounding of emotions with music. As much as the contraction and dilation of time adds to visual spectacle, the bg score similarly sets the subconscious tone of the sequence. Kiravani is a genius when it comes to building up a scene with background score.
He did a great job
Bahubali was keeravani's peak

Rajamouli sir single-handedly revolutionized Indian cinema and now he is taking it to the world. Definitely his sensibility is different from that of Western audiences but still he is able to grasp their attention without changing his way of story telling. Thanks studiobinder for the breakdown🙌. Yes, emotions can influence action on a different level.

the scene where ram re enters in forest with back lighting that was dope and also the scene where fire works are dancing around ram and water is splashing around bheem , omg , how could someone imagine a scene like that
Great direction 💯
For me Raju regretting and protecting Bheem from hanging is the best action scene. The back ground music for that entire action scene is the best I have seen ever and in particular when Bheem hits on Raju's head with a wooden stem and try to kill him with that stem but avoids remembering their friendship and the music score plays during that particular scene melts heart's of those which are built with rock
💕💕
SSR is not just a Director but a: 'Master' storyteller...and we Telugu people & our whole country are all so proud of Him.. and of-course, the intro Ram's fight scene has more impact on the whole move, than any other action parts put together because, the intro action defines and also defies both Ram's & Bheems Goal...only after learning about Ram's struggle(flashback), Bheem decides to changing his plans from just rescuing their tribe girl to eventually fight against the great British empire....according to the plot, its only then, after all these episodes/scenes happen, Bheem's turns a freedom fighter, not before..Ram is born to fight with British because that's what His father trained Him & made him.

Dear @StudioBinder, gratitude for the video. Mr SSR is not just an ordinary filmmaker. He comes from an industry where lot myths about filmmaking. 6 dance numbers, 4 fights, two heroins, and an item song were only standards of a cinema. But He ruled out all the myths, and he made path braking movies. and he constantly pushed himself and built a great foundation for indian fim industry. When the heights gross of a telugu film was around 80cr INR, he planned for a project of 300+cr INR and showed the true potential of indian cinema, which collected 1000cr INR gross. No indian ever imagined that . He evolved movie by movie, he pushed all the limits of indian cinema and ruled out the language barer, and first ever built a best(culturally authentic) indian cinema. He deserves all the success and credit.

Rajamouli sir has always emphasised emotion underneath his Action sequences in all his movies. Raju's character introduction is probably one of the greatest scenes ever in cinema because of the spectacular Visual storytelling.
