  • Join me on a tour of the history of the Haskell Home and the Haskell Home Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan. The Haskell Home was an orphanage that was established in 1894 and operated until the mid 1920's in the city. The original three story home was destroyed by fire in 1909, where three children perished. The orphanage continued on in a smaller capacity in other buildings on the grounds for approximately two more decades, but the home was never rebuilt.
Children who arrived and stayed at the home were from over 25 U.S. states, from all races, ages and nationalities. They were taught trades and skills such as farming, woodworking, cooking, baking, sewing as well as a regular school curriculum, exercise and good diet habits. They were also taught manners, self discipline, hygiene along with bible studies.
This is the story of Battle Creek's last orphanage.
The Haskell Home Cemetery was originally platted in 1899, and served a burial site for children at the Haskell Home, as well as the James White Memorial Home for the elderly, and indigent people in the community.
Today there is only a single marker identifying the location of the original cemetery where an estimated 50 people are buried. All of the headstones are long gone either from sinking into the ground, or having been stolen by vandals over the past century.

Wow, I was born and raised in BC and have never heard of the Haskell Home. What a wonderful story (except for the fire happening).

A side story I did not include in the video was one of the little boy orphans in the days following the fire was found climbing through the rubble. One of the adults asked him what he was doing, and with tears in his eyes, he told them he was trying to find his Christmas presents. It kind of makes you step back and look at things from a new perspective when you hear something like that. If this video does well, I may have to do a follow up and include some of the stories of the lives of the Haskell Home children and what lives they went onto live.

My grandmother was an Armstrong. Her cousin married Custer, and that's where that part of his name came from. Her line of the Armstrong family was extremely poor, and her Dad worked for freed slaves who were sharecroppers. Hearing the name Armstrong in this makes me wonder if she was related to my grandmother.
My grandmother, Ida Rebecca Armstrong(Slaughter) went to college and became a nurse, and ended up working at the Sanitarium, and even had a picture of herself with Bob Dole when he came there as a patient.
Thanks again for this really nice video.

Thanks for this very informative video, Michael. I found it after searching for the Haskell Memorial Home that I found in the 1900 census. My great grandaunt, Ada A. Park, and her six children were listed there. She was a Mother (Orphans Home) and her children were listed as Members. She was listed as married for 15 years but her husband was not there and I have yet to locate him in 1900. I had no idea why she would have been there until I watched your video. I have no idea how long they were there or if they experienced the fire in 1903. I do find them in St. Joseph, MO in the 1910 census as a complete family with her husband, Hiram S. It looks like the family moved around a lot.

Sometimes the mothers were receiving treatment at the Sanitarium, and the children would stay at the Haskell Home. Also sometimes children were placed with them for short periods of time while the parents tried to sort out issues in their life.

It's an amazing history. Most of the children went onto to live productive lives all over the country. Some of the boys served in WWI & WWII. Some of the children remained in BC and lived their whole lives here.

Thanks Michael. I had read some about the Haskell House, mostly in the enquirer. I don’t think I knew about the cemetery. I have lived in Battle Creek for close to 30 years, and the history of this city has fascinated me.

It's too bad this has slipped into history. Most people in Battle Creek don't know about this.

My direct ancestors was traced back to Dr. Harvey Kellogg ! from one of his "kids"?? Although he had no kids of his own! Is there a way to find if my ancestor also come from the " Haskell house"?? Many years ago, while still an Adventist we knew the Haskell family! Being just " kids" they didn't tell us about their background. I have pictures of my ancestors with Dr. Kellogg , thanks to the internet. and some info from my grandmother who knew Ellen White! My grandmother used to write articals for the " Signs Of Times". I would love to fill in gaps! As they never talked about my ancestry! My relation to the Adventist Church has been very rocky! They don't like being questioned!

I've noticed lots of black birds fly in circles around top of the Federal Bldg like maybe they been doing that a while. Like maybe some folks never made it out long ago so the birds keep coming back to feed on old Federal workers never made it out either. Happy Halloween!

Interesting the prophecy from the divergent 7th Day Adventist interests in the orphans. Why did California appeal to them? Likely sunshine & warmth the new west promised at that time in history compared to Michigan.

Ellen White was the Seventh Day Adventist Church Prophetess. She had visions. One of her visions told her that the SDA's had concentrated too much in BC and needed to outreach to other States and the World. She felt the BC Sanitarium which had started as the Western Health Reform Society, exhalting a healthy life and dietary style as well as a Christ Centered Life had become adulterated by J.H.Kellogg and that he had turned the place into a Resort. They had a falling out. JH Kellogg attempted a coup within the BC Tabernacle to take over. He was chastised and disfellowshipped for his then anti-Adventist doctrinal beliefs in a Pure Race Betterment Society along the lines of Henry Ford and even a bit of Nazism. He even opened a booth at the Chicago World's Fair (The World's Columbian Exposition, 1893).
JH Kellogg was a bit unconventional.. he did not believe in having sex. He and his wife never consummated their marriage and were extremely proud of that. He believed that boys should be circumcised without anesthesia because the pain would remind them to never "touch" themselves. If young girls were caught masturbating, his treatment was to burn their clitoris with Carbonic Acid to make it insensitive to pleasure or even feeling. As the years went on, he became a power hungry little man. The local Calhoun Co. Medical Society at one time considered removing him from membership. He died a lonely old man with only his secretary around him. He had treated his brother W.K. Kellogg (Corn Flakes) so badly they stopped speaking for many many years. He was even unaware that WK had gone blind from Cataracts and was using a guide dog and cane for mobility.

The more I look at my ancestry, the more I become amazed! I'm descended from one of Dr. Kellogg's "kids",! Did he take in kids from the Haskel home, ?? When I was an Àdventist, we were friends of the Haskels many years ago! Didn't know about their connection to Dr. Kellogg. Maybe I'm decendent from Haskels "kids"! How do I find out?
