      It would be ridiculous to fly WW1 fighters in such tight formations. They would be crashing into one another. Exploding anti aircraft shells were not developed until WW2. Even if they did have them in WW1, climb or turn to get out of range of the explosions.@@Mcwartegz

      It probably did happen, I'm afraid. W E Johns described a similar incident in 'Biggles Learns to Fly' . His Great War period stories have a reasonably realistic feel to them because he flew DH4 bombers over the Western Front, and drew on his experiences for them. "Dirty tricks" in his tales are always attributed to the Germans but the incidents on which some of them were based were actually perpetrated by the British! (But we have to portray 'our lads' as thoroughly decent chaps who'd never, ever do such things, old bean.)

    A Frenchman named Roland Garros invented a "deflector gear" system and mounted it on his Morane Saulnier monoplane. It was basically metal plates bolted onto the propeller to deflect the bullets off to the side. In 1915 he was shot down and captured along with his plane.Tony Fokker improved it and developed synchronization gear though he probably got his idea from patented designs from 1913 with German authority. The first planes to have real sync gear were the Fokker E.III's.Hope that helped :)

Hated to see the losses of the French boys here. Most especially the dirty deal trick pulled/executed by the Kraut triplane pilot, strafing & gunning down the downed Nieuport pilot..Believe these things happened!! Got a negative response fr his wingman Red triplane pilot, shrugged it off, as if to say, "F**k you!! My deal, my kill!!"
    Viewed a cut-for-TV version not long after this was released. Lots of these grizzly scenes were extricated. Very realistic movie, in my honest opinion!! Well done! As a fmr. pilot, can definitely appreciate! !!**

      @awn6525 Před 2 lety

      Yes, except for the fact that all the triplanes are red except for the baddie- who was black. In reality all of them would be swimming in different colours, that's why it was called the 'flying circus'
      Edit: and I don't think that german or allied pilots ever really shot down a man who had got out of his aeroplane on the ground: it wasn't done. Occasionally of course there would be the lack of fighting chivalry, but overall I think that murder like that never really happened.

    • @ered203
      @ered203 Před 2 lety

      @@awn6525 I was going to tear into you for this. War is Hell and no quarters are to be given if ones wishes to shorten the war and save lives, but upon researching the topic, you are correct. There were some incidents with the Poles and Czechs vs The Nazis, and a few traded back and forth atrocities in the Pacific (a very few Japanese pilots were known to have done this as well as a very few Americans). Even during the ugly MIG Alley days nobody really shot at parachutes.
      I didn't see much data on WW1, but the Germans were supposed to have had a code against it. A few British sources claimed there were incidents by the Germans early in the war, but I couldn't find anything hard to verify that. Interesting. You learn something new every day.

      If they used modern replica planes for some sequences I suspect they'd have to use radial, as opposed to rotary engines. In Britain true rotary engines were banned - they were endearingly prone to catch fire, among other problems - in about 1930. Shuttleworth Trust have an Avro 504K and a Sopwith Pup which can still fly, but they may be exempt as museum pieces. America is probably similar.

    This doesnt have anything on the Battle of Britain or even The Hunters or The Blue max. The CGI here makes the planes look terribly fake with horrible lighting rendering from AA flashes and such, relatively poor cinematography. In this age people ought to be able to make good movies with real equipment and make special effects seamless, cheap CGI is not the right direction.

      I agree entirely. Hell's Angels 1930 is still far better than this shit.

      Or maybe he's a stand-in for Eugene Bullard, a black pilot who flew with the Lafayette Escadrille?

      PrezPendejo In WW1, Bullard wanted to join the real Lafayette Escadrille after becoming a fighter pilot, but they weren’t in need of replacements, so he flew with a few French squadrons who fought with the Lafayette Escadrille (American pilots flying in French squadrons that weren’t the Lafayette Escadrille were called the Lafayette Flying Corps). When America sent its squadrons over, he wasn’t accepted because he was black. After after a scuffle with a superior on leave in Paris, it was back to the infantry for Bullard.

    Nice video, but this movie is a total garbage compared to "Der Rote Baron" in 2008. Why are all german pilots riding Dr.I? Why are all Dr.Is red?
    Its another example of "Heil America" type of movie. Sad how story of Lafayette Escadrille is depicted here.

    An otherwise pretty good film ruined again by the simplistic, stereotypical and highly inaccurate portrayal of the German airman. It's stupid and idiotic but it seems it's all Hollywood can muster itself to do. Nowadays it seems that they have even given up trying to make movies, simply churning out another superhero flick or the next Fast and Furious installment number 950!
