It would be ridiculous to fly WW1 fighters in such tight formations. They would be crashing into one another. Exploding anti aircraft shells were not developed until WW2. Even if they did have them in WW1, climb or turn to get out of range of the explosions.@@Mcwartegz
First off the allied fighter used was the Nieuport 17, and secondly, the movie makers knew the red Fokker Tripes were inaccurate. But they did it to make it easier for the audience to tell who was friend and foe.
Exactly, thats why his peer shook his head because in War back then, while in a plane, its air to air not air to ground especially if the enemy couldn’t fight back
It probably did happen, I'm afraid. W E Johns described a similar incident in 'Biggles Learns to Fly' . His Great War period stories have a reasonably realistic feel to them because he flew DH4 bombers over the Western Front, and drew on his experiences for them. "Dirty tricks" in his tales are always attributed to the Germans but the incidents on which some of them were based were actually perpetrated by the British! (But we have to portray 'our lads' as thoroughly decent chaps who'd never, ever do such things, old bean.)
A Frenchman named Roland Garros invented a "deflector gear" system and mounted it on his Morane Saulnier monoplane. It was basically metal plates bolted onto the propeller to deflect the bullets off to the side. In 1915 he was shot down and captured along with his plane.Tony Fokker improved it and developed synchronization gear though he probably got his idea from patented designs from 1913 with German authority. The first planes to have real sync gear were the Fokker E.III's.Hope that helped :)
