Barry my wife and I lease an EV through her work. I don't think of myself as an EV evangelist, but simply a pragmatic person. I'd like to address a point: Yes, some EV's use cobalt in their battery chemistry, but please don't forget that cobalt is used in the refinement of crude oil. Of late a lot of attempts ( and some quite successful ) have been made to recycle batteries, but you can't recycle a litre of petrol/diesel, once it's burnt it's burnt and that includes the cobalt used at the refinery.... Anyhow, I do agree with the comments on depreciation ( I told you I was pragmatic ) and I think E'V's really do need to get to price parity with ICE cars otherwise people are not going to buy them... I believe there is still a way to go before the battery technology is where it needs to be: Sodium Iron batteries and solid state will help us get there... But I wouldn't buy one right now, but I WOULD LEASE one as the lease deals can be quite good and that makes the T.C.O. a total non-brainer and it also means that after the 3 years another E.V is going onto the second hand market ( helping to bring the prices down, i.e/ supply + demand 101 ;-) ).... If I am going to say one thing that is less pragmatic then it would be good if you can research ALL sides of the argument before making comments ... Thanks; that's all I would politely ask.... I have researched all the tech we use at our house and in our cars for 100's of hours ( not kidding !! ), so it would be nice if you made yourself aware of all aspects and gave a balanced viewpoint

I have actually, and my view is very balanced, and very measured but thanks for taking the time to put your point of view across, you may also want to have a read of “Cobalt Red” and also how much petrol you can desulphurise using just the amount that is present in 1 EV battery 👍

Hi Barrie. I have run an EV since the very early days of the original Leaf. I enjoy the style of drive and comfort of an EV and they have always suited my needs. I do not have rose tinted glasses either towards EVs or ICE cars. I purchased a KIA EV6 as an early adopter in Dec 21 and nine months later I sold it back to the dealership returning more than I paid for it. This put me in a positive mind about EV values and in Dec 22 I purchased a LEAF with the intention of keeping it short term and trading in for a sportier EV. To date this vehicle has lost around 40% off the purchase price. I like the car and it still meets my needs but the consequence of its drop in value is that I will be keeping it for a considerable time. Neither the main Nissan dealership around the corner from you or the specialist EV dealer I purchased from are keen to value the car or use it in p.ex despite it being as bought. In fact the dealership around the corner has Nissan EVs on the forecourt which I looked at in Dec 22! Nobody has a crystal ball when it comes to the motor trade and vehicle valuations but clearly ICE vehicles have such a lengthy history they are less volatile to variables in this respect. What Ive started to do now if a car perks my interest (particularly an EV) is get the registration and get an online trade in valuation for that vehicle to see the approximate depreciation should it be bought at the screen price….Compared to 12 months ago, in my opinion with negotiation, there are some great used EV deals out there if the car suits your needs and you are likely to keep it for a good time
In conclusion ive never really understood people who cannot articulate a critical response without resorting to personalised hate…it usually just highlights their ignorance. I think your views are very balanced and accurate of the current situation without any particular agenda.

Thank you, I am sure EV's will come back, but they just need to stop lying about them at the. moment and let sales grow organically, and not by forcing them on people who dont want them

Hi Barrie, love to hear your views on all aspects of the motor trade, and agree with so much that you say. EV's are right for some motorists, but not all. EV depreciation is horrendous at the moment. ONTO is in big trouble as its main backer has pulled out, owing to huge fleeet loses. Keep up the honest opinions and shame on those that give personal attacks. Ray

The cheapest late model auto Vauxhall Corsa s' are the EV versions. Used prices for many EVs have fallen as market reality is hitting.
Crashed EVs will become an increasing issue - insurance costs will eventually (soon I suspect) reflect high write-off/repair costs.

I hear Citroen are working on an L7e B1 licence version of the Ami with more power and 80kph top speed like the Twizzy. If they can keep the price low enough I think it could be a real winner.

If i had one of them, i still couldnt get to work or home any faster, my average speed is 15 mph so this one is ideal

The problem i have is the EVs in the UK are still way too expensive for people like me on low incomes , I work at Waitrose 35 hours a week after paying tax national insurance council tax rent etc im probably left with £150 a month over 12 months i would save £1800 so to buy a new Ami it would take me around 4 years , That is 4 years of working 5 days a week 7 hours a day and as you probably know Supermarket work is hard work moving heavy cages around and stacking shelves or dealing with bad customers , If i was going to buy another car i can buy a cheap Diesel car for around £2 grand that will be as cheap to fill as an EV is to charge good example Smart car diesel version 85mpg and can be found for £2 grand and will do 82mph top speed so will go faster than an Ami , further than an Ami and probably last longer if we are honest as another thing worrying me is the battery how long will such a small battery last after having to be charged everyday ? Id guess 10 years at most so not brilliant.

thats a shame, the only thing i would say is that they are negligible to run, I save about £40 per week in fuel so that alone would pay for finance costs

Even if the pollution is greater .. it is concentrated to the manufacturing and not on every street in the city.

Hi Barrie. sorry to hear about the online abuse you are receiving. The problem is with "keyboard warriors" is that there are always people with polarizing views. You get the EV evangelists at one end and the EV haters at the other end. In between most people just pick the cars they think are suitable for them. I've got both a petrol car and an EV and I like both of them so I will always buy the car I like and which suits me.As they say "my money, my choice" Have a good day.

Am I correct in thinking that the last person to own the vehicle is responsible to pay the scrappage costs? And why are the advertisers are using Woman to sell them, is that who EV's are aimed at?

Here in NZ Gov offers rebate up to $8k on new EVs ro soften the outlay cost. Still too $ for me so i opted for new 2021 Toyota corolla hybrid
Im in tesla model 3 fb group out of interest.
Back in 2022 some owners lost 20k over year as tesla dropoed prices by 10k & gov introduced rebate was 10k at time some owners mussed out on both.

If you buy? Buy used. If you lease? Lease new.
If you buy, the question is why. If you want one for saving the environment, don't. You can't reliably get the miles out of the battery before needing to replace it to make it better for the environment than a hybrid petrol.
If you want one because you like them, go for it.

Oke normally I would not react and you do make sense, but the whole creepy charging is just an English thing at best. Here shell has their charges right next to the petrol pumps. And tesla’s working the chargers… it is literally just push one button on the connector and plug in. Here fastnet even supports plugin and charge for other makes. Keep up you nice work but this just isn’t true outside of the uk, i think you lost your balanced view.

I'm in the UK, discussing problems for EV's in the UK, especially for uptake amongst women as that has been in our new lately, so i think on the whole i have a pretty balanced view

Yep, EV-angelism really is as bad as you say it is. Outspoken electric vehicle fans (they're usually angry 'men', for some weird hormonal reason) regard their choice of personal transport with the zeal of all religious bigots; criticism is seen as not just heresy, but blasphemy. Anything that threatens the sanctity of their share prices or investments is anathema, and many of them (literally) worship a certain Ego Muskrat as the latest prophet and/or messiah.
    L. Ron Hubbard was the last one. There will be others...
It's absurd - but also very sad. Please don't let their ravings get you down. You're not losing your mind; I suspect that a lot of the online critics resent the fact that there's someone, somewhere, who's not afraid to say what he thinks. Rocking the religious boat is something that's strictly taboo in the USA (especially when social status and money's involved); thankfully, the ordinary Brit doesn't have to put up with such crackpot nonsense.
    So, screw 'em.
My dad had Alzheimer's. I nursed him at home, 24 hours a day, without respite, for 6 years. He couldn't be left alone, so I slept in a chair by his bedside, cat-napping for no more than an hour at a time. For six bloody years. It was horrendous. He became a complete stranger; he didn't know anything and couldn't do anything for himself, not even lift a spoon. I had to carry him to the bathroom. For the final two years he'd forget how to drink and how to swallow a mouthful of food.
He could be violent at times. One minute he'd be stroking my hand, crooning happily, the next he was berserk with fury and throwing me across the room or (once) down the stairs. It was terrifying. I was lucky in that I trained in martial arts for 25 years, so I knew how to fall and how to take a punch.
All this time I was also nursing my mum through heart and lung problems and cancer. Her mind stayed sharp and she could manage a spoon, but otherwise was as helpless as my dad. So... I spent 16 years (1992 to 2008) providing full-time care. It was exhausting and definitely had a permanent affect on my state of mind.
I have nothing but contempt for the scum who have been wishing you ill and attacking you online. Having said that, whilst I can sometimes be vindictive, I wouldn't wish dementia even on my worst enemy.
Stay strong, mate. Be well. And keep driving before they ban it! 😁
