I want them to know that even though this is your culture, you are so precious. I can not put into words how horrified I am that women are sold like a goat. I don't know your government, but I HOPE that someone could ask them to stop this practice and create an avenue, so people can pay their debt. Please do your best to protect your daughters. Bless you all.

Please tell them that they have love being sent to them from their sisters in the US. Tell them we know how strong and brave and intellect and kind they are. We care! Don’t lie, the people in the US would rather whine about slavery that was ended 155 years ago than acknowledge it was perpetrated by their own people and continues to this same day by the descendants of the original space traders. People in The West have no idea the reality of living in less politically correct countries. If you’re waiting for a donation from BLM you’ll die of old age first.

People often say “all cultures should be respected” and “No one culture is better or worse than another” but obviously that is crap. This culture, tribes that sacrifice babies, Children of God cult, Islam, Scientology… it’s not hard to see that some cultures are undeniably worse than others and unacceptable to decent people. Even if different things are considered right and wrong to different cultures, ultimately right and wrong are not subjective and evil is still evil even if those doing it don’t agree.

My great-grandma, born in 1925, was the youngest of the 13. She never got to go to school as a kid, but she went to what was essentially an elementary school for adults when she was older. We understood and are aware of the concept of modern slavery, we are also aware of the long-term negative impacts slavery has on the descendants of enslaved people. People in the United States are charged, prosecuted, found guilty and sentenced to prison for enslaving people more than most people realize. In 2019 a South Carolina man was found quilty of enslaving his mentally challenged employee. In 2023 a Florida man was sentenced to prison for enslaving Mexican immigrants. Also in 2023 three members of a Virginia family were sentenced to prison for enslaving a family member, the mother and her two adult sons enslaved a woman who was in an arranged marriage with a fourth family member. Slavery comes in many forms, we need to do better teaching people the signs and how to safely ask if people need help and how to safely alert the proper authorities when they do need help.

This practice was done in Liberia too. My grandmother told me about it. It is shunned now. When she told me, she said "we keep telling families to stop allowing these men to stake claim to your daughter for a little goat or small money." Not in those exact words. Anyhow, a shunned practice for sure.

@@aprilgibson817 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. Isaiah 45:7
Evil exists because of God. If he created everything then both good and evil exists only because of him. When he created the garden of Eden, HE put the tree of good and evil there. HE created the serpent, the devil, who he knew would rebel. Why did he do any of this? Why give his creation, which was originally good and free of corruption, the opportunity to bring death and every evil suffering into this world? It's actually quite perplexing considering the amount of suffering people face in this life.
Also, God allowed things like polygamy in the bible. When a man can have more then one woman, how do we not expect women to then be treated like slaves and like property? Men, through their lust, desire women of all kinds of variety, which is why you see men in the bible who had 10, 15, 20, 100 women at any given time. God outright says murder is wrong, "thou shalt not kill", but then allows a practice like that, which quite naturally leads to the objectification and mistreatment of women.

Because no everybody believes in God and there are a lot of loopholes in logic for religion.
I also feel that there are many things that don't make sense. I chalk it up to that being the reason it's called faith.
I'm not religious by any means, and while I believe anyone should have any faith they please, it still rubs me the wrong way when people assume everyone sees things from their point of view or believes in the same things.

The worst part is that the men maybe old enough to be a great-grand fathers.I went to elementary school with a boy from such relation. The old man whom I thought was his grant father was actually his father who married his mother by exchanging her for livestock.

      This is very wrong.
While one or two cases like this happened, it has never been a culture anywhere in Igboland.
What you should also know is that through medieval times, even in the West, women have been married off for several weird and sometimes stupid reasons, traded off as commodities of convenience to suit the families, even as children.
But though terrible, those practices were not like this cos the girls were properly married and had wife status. They weren't this horrible.
And the practice has since stopped with civilisation.
So you're very wrong in your statement. Kindly read history.
