- Carters Steam Fair is a travelling vintage fair. Founded in 1977 by John Carter (1942-2000), this family business is now managed by the second generation of Carters.
Carters operate and maintain a large collection of vintage rides and sidestalls, ranging in date from the 1870s to the 1960s, and every season they are travelled with vintage heavy lorries and traditional showmen's living wagons. The fair provides an opportunity to enjoy historic equipment and artwork.
Welcome back to the Vlog, Me and Libby went on another adventure on the train, This time we went to Woking for the world famous Carters Steal Fair for one last visit before sadly the firm stop travelling, They are looking to sell the collection to be stored in a large building/Warehouse so this historic collection can preserved for future generations to enjoy, The harsh English weather and building up/Pulling down weekly takes its toll on the Gear.
So, 2022 is the final tour of this fantastic vintage fairground, Basingstoke is my local Carters but I'm working the weekend of the 17th so decided to visit Woking, Lovely ground and a really nice set up, The Octopus ride was back out and it was my first time on it, Plus the classics like golden gallopers, Chair swings, Dodgem and SKID.

Great video so quickly edited and uploaded. My eldest son and his friends were there last night and bought up more of Carter's posters etc. Sadly Joby Carter didn't have a marker pen on him to sign them with, so we'll remember to bring one with us when we pay them a visit at Englefield Green in Egham on the 1 & 2nd Oct. On the BBC's 'The One Show' Joby was saying how costs have risen from £60K to hire a site to around £80K. Then he's had to factor in rising fuel and food costs, plus hefty rises in minimum wages, all the insurances, and the additional rising costs of the prizes etc.
So nice the Wayne and the boys on the skid, gave Sloth Vlogs a shout out

Glad you got a good ride on the Skid ... when we went on it a few years ago I don't think our car was working properly because no matter how much we jacked the peddle the car did not swing ... car just stayed parallel with the sweeper arm through the whole ride ... we had a really long ride in fact the ride was so long that we even got too tired to keep slamming the pedal so we gave up even trying and just sat back till the ride was over.
I was trying to teach Libby the pedal 😂 we went back for a second ride and got more whip
It’s such an organic ride. Sometimes the brake pad doesn’t quite go down far enough and they’re a bugger to set just right. The metal plates aren’t flat and the brakes that work catch on some parts of the track but not others. It’s possible, if you’re on one of the slightly raised sections of track, to lift the car with the brake pedal when the ride stationary or moving slowly, which is why Folly Farm make you wait until the ride has reached a certain speed before letting you press the pedal.
One tip - once you’ve got the car swinging a bit, don’t press the pedal for longer than necessary. The springs in the ‘fish tray’ start stretching at around 45 degrees left/right of the ‘facing into the middle’ position, which slows down the car. Having the brake on as well reduces your momentum. The best time to lift the brake is just after the car whips through the ‘facing into the middle’ position or when you get a particularly good jerk when the brake hits a slightly higher part of the track. Lol leave it to a former Physics teacher to ruin the fun 😂

I went on an Octopus when I was about 10 and threw up lol. Good to see old rides like the skid, shame they are stopping travelling but it must cost a fortune to keep it on the road.
Most of these vintage rides used to run faster back in the day, so you’d be fine on it this season. Carter’s Octopus seems to be running slightly slower than it did before, since it returned to the fold this year - I’ve not seen a ‘double spin’ in person or on any of the vlogs this season. You’d normally get at least a couple of these double spins on every ride. When I first went on one in the seventies, you’d get airtime going over the top and the combo of lifting out of your seat, that feeling of weightlessness and spinning all the time was awesome! But it certainly needed a mop and bucket on hand. It’s still one of my favourites rides, though, and Carter’s machine is an absolute beauty.

".. It doesn't spin consistently ..." yes and no - it's a bit like the waltzer in the sense that one lean in th right place at the right time and it spins berserk ! Been on the Octopus many times growing up .in the 70s and 80s .....

I've never been to Carters, i just found out about it when i was looking for a classic vintage funfair to go to... but i got devastated by the sad news of them selling out... 😭 Do you know if whoever buys them, will keep them running but under a different name, or they'll just keep them in their mention as a collection and they'll never see the light of day again! 😔 Or will thry put them into a museum of some sort??

If this is really the end of Carter's? This is very sad news. Yes they can't keep up with the expectation of thrill rides because Carter's are THE traditional travelling funfair. Carter's will find their way, they always have. Their travelling fair is a gem. The Dive Bomber and The Octopus are experiences many of us will remember! Did they do the Swinging Gym? Blimey that thing was exhausting. Bright, Clean and Polished Exhibition.

Sad news...I'm curious though as to what this means; does it mean they're simply no longer traveling and will stick to one permanent location? Or will they sell off the fair outright, which if so is truly sad, and I can only hope the new owners will treat it with love and respect.
Im pretty sure there selling the fair and both are sad but this is sadder, if they stay in one location some could go to this location, if its not far.
