if Minecraft implemented a mechanic like this for hardcore worlds, it would be awesome since it would make you choose between breaking the portal and wasting resources or letting the nether take over the overworld.
Honestly would make for a cool faction RP server, cultists vs Kingdom Cultists building portals about the place like little operative cells, with Kingdom trying to coal up their borders, but contended with 1) Cultist operatives destroying the borders 2) Limited Coal Supply meaning that other areas will get more protection than others A battle of attrition between outcast crazy people who try to erect portals, and a vast kingdom with a lot of ground to have to cover to keep putting out fires.
