- The making of a two tone leather tote bag with Charmeuse interior liner, documented from start to finish. In this video i show the full process of how I made this leather tote bag using two different colors of chrome tanned leather as well as how I attached a nice interior liner to the inside of the bag to take it to the next level. Materials:
Leathers:
- Premium Harvest English Tan 5.5oz
- Premium Harvest Wheat 5.5oz
Fabric:
- Charmeuse Bridal Satin Fabric, Off White
- Fusible Fleece White
Hardware:
- #12 Copper Rivets & Burrs
- #20 Antique Brass Snap
- Antique Brass Dome Rivets
Threads:
- V-138 UV Bonded Nylon, Beige 4oz.
- .06mm & .08mm Ritza Tiger Thread, Beige
Glue / Tape:
- Ecoweld Contact Adhesive
- 5mm 3M double Sided Clear Tape

Im not a leather worker, nor have I any experience in the industry besides owning some "high-end" leather products - but still I have to admire the impeccable craftsmanship! Thanks. That was my first time doing a liner in a tote bag like that. If I would do it again I would make the liner a little smaller. Always learning.

I have watched you make this bag several times now. I love it and would really like to give it a shot. I'm not very good at making a pattern and I know you don't sell/share your measurements. How do you decide the width and depth of the cutouts in the bottom? Is there a specific formula? Thank you for your inspiring work.
Thank you. It is all trial & error. I think the size of the two cut out areas for the bottom are 2-3/4” from the edge by 5” long. If that makes sense.

Hi Mr. KGL, do you always use the same glue? If so can you say what it is? If not when do you use what you use and why, if you don’t mind? Beautiful bag and smart looking video production and editing. Tks!
I use EcoWeld contact cement. It is water based so there is no harsh vapors. It works well for most projects that I make. If you were to make projects that would tend to get wet like sheaths or horse tack I would use a non-water based contact cement like Barge. Those non-water based adhesives just have a stronger order when applying so I would apply them outside or in a well vented area.
May I ask a question about the liner size? Is it as big as the bag, or is it slightly smaller? If smaller, only by the thickness of the leather or how do you calculate it? This was very nice to see, excellent bag, very good job. Thank you for sharing 🙂
Thank you. I actually made it the same size as the bag but it really should be smaller. My liner, once it was inside the bag was a bit wrinkly. If I do it again I would try to make the liner smaller. Not sure how much smaller though.

Beautiful work! You make it look easy! I dont know if you answer questions but at the 4:09 point I noticed you hand skived (thinned) the corners , but if I am seeing correctly, didnt bell skive the edges where you sewed your seams. Does this present a problem when you turn the bag rightside out ( make the stitches pull) or is the leather you are using quite supple or thin? I appreciate that you hand stitched the corners on the box bottom. Very nice work. Thankyou!

Is the size/measurement for the lining(fabric) the same as the the measurement of the leather?
I believe it is but I think it could be a little smaller for a better fit.

No the lining only attaches around the top.

Gorgeous bag, great work, you spent all that time on a beautiful lining, yet leave your edgea rough and unfinished , I am just wondering why not take another 10-15 minutes and burnish and dye your edges?

As you already have a skiving machine, it would have been good if you rolled your edges in the top and also in the panels. It would give a more cleaner look.
