- Following 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood", Hollywood seemed hesitant to be seen to rival the success of the picture, leading to several 'son of Robin Hood' adventures. The second of these types, 1950's "Rogues of Sherwood Forest", almost leans in to Errol Flynn's famous outing, reading almost as a sequel to the classic film. Not only are several costumes reused, notably one of Basil Rathbone's here sported by Lowell Gilmore as the Count of Flanders, but Alan Hale makes his third and final appearance as Little John, after appearing opposite both Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks in 1922.
"Rogues of Sherwood Forest" sees Robert, Earl of Huntingdon, the son of Robin Hood, standing up to the oppression of Prince John, now King John after Richard's death. Robert and Little John bring the band back together, with Friar Tuck, Alan a'Dale and WIll Scarlett returning to the greenwood. Rescinding all the good deeds done in Richard's reign, John seeks to make his enemies pay with their lives. With the help of the brave and resourceful ward, Marianne, Robert leads the rebellion as the reincarnated Robin Hood. Yet Archbishop Stephen Langton has other ideas than just rebellion, convincing the men of Sherwood Forest that something more tangible, a bill of rights, must bring John into line...
Starring John Derek as Robin, Alan Hale as Little John, Diana Lynn as Marianne, George Macready as King John, Lowell Gilmore as the Count of Flanders, Billy House as Friar Tuck, Lester Matthews as Alan a'Dale, Billy Bevan as Will Scarlet, and Donald Randolph as Archbishop Stephen Langton.

What an entertaining, fast moving little B movie. One of Derek's first chances to be lead, I think. Also, Marianne is a surprisingly strong female lead for the time, playing a vital role in Robin's plans throughout.
Lovely
I love old Robin Hood movies, thank you! 🎥😃
Movies like this helps my mental health.
Watching this movie with John Derek as Robin Hood. His looks reminds me of actor Errol Flynn who played Robin Hood in 1938. Loved that classic movie. ❤😊
Amazing. This Robin Hood film is all fun! And John Derek the lead looks very similar to Errol Flynn’s lead in the other Robin Hood film. And there are some similarities in the Ivanhoe of Robert Taylor too. Lovely films. Lovely era. And watching these makes me remember reading all these stories as a kid.
Alan Hale was a very good actor. He was close friends with Errol Flynn and eventually made 13 movies with him.
Hard to believe this 1938 film sequel is itself now 72-years old. Wow....Always love Alan Hale. The father of the skipper in Gilligans Island TV series.
And wasn't his son the spitting image of him? And this was Hale's third time playing Little John.
Where did you learn math?
Never got a chance to watch this one. Never heard of it. Great to have the chance. John Derek was well served in athletic parts like this
The script is surprisingly literate and historically accurate. Mariane is proactive, not just a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued. The acting, direction, production design and cinematography are far above average.
GREAT MOVIE, NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD SEE THIS PARTICULAR MOVIE, THANK YOU.
Enjoyed John Derek as Robin Hood! Thanks for sharing these films. A fun weekend indulgence.
They were entertaining for the whole family, no outrageous language
NO, DEI GARBAGE.
We watched Robin Hood every Wednesday in 1960s England starring Richard greene. We loved them. Although I've seen them recently as an adult dies make me laugh. But a product of its time so can't knock it. Anyway it was just for kids at the time.
Surprisingly good. Compare this to nowadays when producers can't even remake a classic let alone do a spinoff, without it being garbage and pure propaganda and changing races and genders of characters.
My only gripe is why no English accent?
It may not quite have the panache of the Erroll Flynn version but an enjoyable romp in it's own right, thanks for posting.
How I would love to have been born in the year 1950 instead of getting born in 1969 19 years later.
That's Alan Hale Sr. The one from Giligan Island is Alan Hale Jr.
Another good share from you. Keep up the good work.
Awesome 🎉Damn John Derek is one handsome dude … definitely good casting choice to play the son of another mighty handsome dude … Errol Flynn … love these movies ❤❤which I grew up on … was weaned on lol😂😉
Tom, Are you gay?
Shares a number of actual filmed scenes with "The Bandit of Sherwood Forest" (1946). starting here at 1:08:20, and in the Bandit of Sherwood Forest at about 1:20 into the movie. If I hadn't just watched them back-to-back, I would never have noticed.
That's a great catch! It's fun to spot reused costumes in the Columbia pictures, like Basil Rathbone's Gisborne costume from 1938 sported on Lowell Gilmore here, but fun to see other aspects, too. Good eye!
VERY PLEASED TO SEE THIS MOVIE, AM GLAD I DID, THANK YOU, GREAT COLOUR PRINT.
Do not forget that the Robin Hood movies were made for kids at that time.
Disagree
@@cwtcknessAgree with you, The Adventures of Robin Hood certainly wasn't. But if the OP is referring to things like this, or the Disney TV show, he might be right.
@@robbarbieri8676made for the LGBT community?
I disagree, but children did watch them. I was one of those children, loved watching the films with my mum and dad. My love for these films remains to this day
@@Niko7739 I'm sure you'd know 🤣
This 1950 film makes use of significant footage from a 1946 film "The Bandits of Sherwood Forest".
Alan Hale has been in more Robin Hood movies than Robin Hood, this was his last film, he died shortly after it at 57, way too young
Poor Allen didn't look too well for someone was age 57.
It's a beautiful movie to watch. Thank you.
I didn't know Sherwood Forrest was populated with California Live Oaks!
these are the kind of movie that i man love 🎉🎉❤🙏🆗
Nice movie classic never see this one
Pretty good film. Borrows a lot from Flynn's flick. Derek's striking resemblance looks like he could be Flynn's Robin Hood son.
Horsy! Hooray, good movie👍🏼👏🏼 the true history of Robin Hood💐💐💖🇨🇦
Diana Lynn was only 24 when she acted in the film.
She was a musical prodigy.
Her mum was a concert pianist and music was in her genetics.
Unfortunately Diana Lynn only lived to the age of 45. She suffered a fatal stroke in 1971.
I don't remember Magna Carta being linked to Robin Hood ... or his son ... before. Neatly done ... and extremely logical.
Great movie!!!
Diana Lynn also stared in a Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis movie.
It looks like Skipper from Gilligan's Islands father (Alan Hale senior) stared in several movies too.
Both had roles in westerns.
Wow! Betrayal and dastardship in the first scene.
John like being called, "Your majesty"; I bet Donald would like that, too.
Lol.... there's a lot of handsome dudes & gorgeous ladies in this film ❤ it!!!
It will make a good Xmas 🌲☃️ movie.
The Brit's, Scott's & Irish had very turbulent times (I'm sure even back in the 960's, lives & living was brutal, hard & ugly).
The most nasty that come to mind 4 me (imho) were the years 1066, 1215 to 1800's & then WWI & WWII (I won't mention the 60's --> 90's troubles as they were just as horrific).
ThnX 4-upld & English CC 4Us Hard Of Hearing Old Auto Models ❤ 🌹😽
Fun movie, I liked the joust at the start to show us Robin Jr's character. The actor sure is reminiscent of Flynn's looks, I love the casting. The funniest line, though, was an accident I suppose. Richard III's democratic principles, hilarious.
Thanks. Good movie.
As a boy over 60 years ago I used to enjoy this movie on the BBC ; plenty of good swashbuckling from John Derek though I felt that the film was stolen by George Macready`s excellent King John, one of his best villains.
Awesome film, Love it…❤️. My first time watching this, I’m glad I found this channel with old movies….lately that’s all I care to watch. Today’s movies, imho, can’t hold a candle to the older films. I’m tired of lewd language, sexual overtones, politically correct and CGI/AI garbage….all this doesn’t make a movie better, it only degrades it into oblivion. What happened to all those actors who were trying to make the film count for something? They blew away with the techno era of laziness, plus forget about quality, it’s the easier way out instead. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful film, it made my day brighter….👍❤️🙏🏼
John was NOT King for 30 years but just over half that
58:30 to 1:00:37 - The existential principles here are simply marvellous.
It’s placed on a spiritual and sacred level. It’s the pursuit of justice as opposed to revenge. It’s looking beyond to the future, rather than backwards. It’s thinking how to extend rights, and why. It aspires to better values.
I’m impressed that they actually spent a few minutes to go into the spirit of the Magna Carta. Most Robin Hood movies barely mention it.
GOOD MUSIC.
This is Saturday afternoon double feature at the theatre stuff
Liguists agree that in those days, people haven't heard of the 'propper Oxford English accent' yet - but even to non-professionals the Yankee slang will never be an acceptable hypothesis as to what their language really could have been back then... ;-) ! Enjoyable movie nevertheless, thank you !
i think it is better that we can understand what they are saying, rather speaking in such a way as to spend the entire movie asking other, "what did he say"?
O I say you have not tried to read Shakespeare as originally written.
There is the English you seek. Good luck, you'll need it.
@@secretsquirrel6308more like Chaucer 😊
Really good entertainment value. Great fun! Excellent!
The jousting scene. Shades of Ivanhoe!
We don’t look to Hollywood movies for historical accuracy, however to be pedantic, no English monarch was referred to as Your Majesty at this time, he would be referred to as My Lord. Majesty did not come into usage at all until 300 years later in the reign of Henry VIII and even then the Tudor monarchs were mostly referred to directly as Your Grace.
Hacksaws in 1216 ? . Great flick ! . Ta. Dave
Not a bad film, but I think it should have been called 'Rogues of- choose your own American town or City'
😂😂 lol
Enjoyed fully.
Luv this
Ok I came here because “Robin Hood Prince of Thieves” isn’t free on CZcams.
While I don’t mind watching this, I just cannot get WHY none of the guys playing Robin Hood even attempts an English accent?? Him and Kevin Costner and several of them, is it really that hard lol.
Anyway thanks for uploading it’s kind of a fun lil film.
Actually to avoid serious injury lances were made of wood that would break if too much force was used.
What he said. Thank you.🎭👍

Zulu swashbuckler.
Whoa he killed the horse first time ever seeing something like that in a old swashbuckler movie like this that was something straight out of brave heart he must have been taking notes from William Wallace ha ha ha ....definitely injoyed this movie🗣‼️👍🏿😆😂🤣🤣
Not much has changed regarding government and their taxes.
Winston Marshall and Nancy pelsco
Movie is more like gangster al capone avoiding irs tax tax tax
It's good they just spoke English in this movie rather than the proper language of the day I agree you wouldn't be able to understand it speak in the language of Americans you know that's why they spoke like that in the movie
Old English is very understandable. Just go down south in the US.
but i think that King John of England reminds me a lot that of Donald Trump
