    And I love how you make copies of all the plans. And give it to all the guys so they all know exactly what's going on all the time. You would be surprised on how many crew leaders expect you to know the plan. Even though it changes every day when you do concrete like me. And if you're not the lead guy or the guy running the show

    Great video! Have learned a lot by following your vids. Quick question:
    Which components do you nail vs. screw? I am under the impression its good practice to use 10d-16d nails to join components that need high shear strength (joist hangers, nailing through the rim joists into the ends of joists, etc.) and screw in components that don't need high shear strength (deck boards, affixing beams on top of notched posts or anchors). What items do you generally nail/screw together and what type do you use for each?

    If you want a huge Time Saver while you are cutting your blocking. Stack the two by twelves on top of one another then you would only have to mark 2 by 12. and your saw blade would cut deep enough to to Mark the one underneath it. And so on. So you would only have to mark 1/2 by 12 for technically is Mini 2 by 12 as you had if you did it right which would me and you wouldn't need to whip out your tape measure and square and pencil 15-20 times you would take it out one time and start cutting

      Gang cutting, just be mindful of potential waste with blocking. We usually try to get our blocking from our joist cut offs. Get a nice big stack of cut offs and have one guy gang cut them. Looked like you guys only had 5 or 6 inches here though. At the very least teach pat to mark all of the cuts at once, adding the blade each time 😁

    Why don't you have a slide compound saw nestled in a stand with an infeed 2x12x10 and outfeed 2x12x10 (or 12)? Can do almost all of your cutting on it other than your string line end cut. Big bonus is the ability to screw blocks down to it anywhere as a stop. Can batch cut blocking out 6x faster.

    quesion about inspection: I have noticed from several youtube videos about building, that you have to have an inspector out to approve your work. How often or for which type of work does an inspector need to approve? Here in Denmark there is no such requirements, you don't need to have your work inspected, unless it's plumbing or electrical.

    • @joewoodyard7572
      @joewoodyard7572 Před 4 lety

      In the states - decks specifically are footing inspections, framing inspections and final inspections. Usually framing and final are done at the same time if you know what your doing ;p
      Footing inspections are based on proper size and depth. Everything is based upon the international building code, though local govt also can require higher standards.
      All of the plans are submitted and approved to obtain the permits to build here as well.

      Only thing I would add to this is if the deck is MAD low to the ground we have left a deck board out so they can see hangars and bolts, most inspectors know us so it's all good but sometimes new blood likes that. Remember** most inspectors are failed framers 😂🤣

      I think you’re talking about the beams, taping them definitely isn’t a bad idea at all, but any flat blocking underneath the deck boards will be more likely to have water sit than on the beam. Plus in an area that people are walking even a tiny bit of give from softening of the blocking will be noticeable

      It could also be argued that maybe this isn't Pat's first rodeo. If you wail on it you could crack or split your nice pretty beam, or knock it too far and then deal with the hassle of bringing it back in line. Just my estimation though, I've done a lot of this kind of work and have often found brute forcing everything often creates more problems than it solves

    That deck is not square. Please, nobody hold framing squares up to string lines. That will get you squarISH at best. Do the math. Measure the corners!! Pythagorean theorem. It’s easier. Faster. More accurate. If you don’t want to do the math for your corner to corner dimensions, at least measure 3’ on one axis, 4’ on the other, those marks will be 5’ apart if your square. You could do 6’, 8’, 10’ if it’s bigger, and so on. Then measure corner to corner both sides, if your parallel and square these measurements will be the same. So simple. I can’t believe someone claiming to be an expert is using the framing square plus string method. It simply doesn’t work, unless your ok with squarish, not square.

      Believe it or not it ends up being stronger than a solid piece when you sandwich together. I forget the exact science behind it but has to do with the wood grains.
