- This is Mima's theme from Touhou 2: Story of Eastern Wonderland
Mima is one of my favourite characters, she's one of the truly evil bosses of the entire Touhou series (there are what, 3?) I've always prefered Complete Darkness over Reincarnation, but Reincarnation is pretty awesome too.

_EDIT10/30/2020: We have been missing the possibility of what if Mima didn't return in game.... what if Mima RETURNED in a MANGA? I've spending more time at home due to the pandemic, and I've decided to start reading Touhou official mangas (manga with with story plot written by ZUN himself). One of the manga is Touhou Chireikiden. Detective Satori is on a case investigating a VENGEFUL SPIRIT escaped from Former Hell. The VENGEFUL SPIRIT likes to possess and drain the MANA of Touhou characters, and the spirit apparently especially hated Youkai and HAKUREI SHRINE! Guess who that might be? MIMA??!!?_

_霊 and 靈 are essentially same word but different form, it can mean supernatural or spirit._
_奇 and 異 are word with similar meaning i.e. weird, strange, unfamiliar, exotic..._
_伝 means legend._
_Look at the similiarity between them. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!_

The kanji game title roughly translates to Rainbow Dragon Cave, needless to say, Rainbow is its theme... Guess what is known to be rainbow-ish in Touhou? Well, not including Meiling who is both dragon and rainbow-ish, it is Master Spark! Our favorite protagonist - Marisa's iconic spell card! And who are Marisa's dear mentor? What kind of person or vengeful spirit could possibly nurture Marisa's interest in magic?? HMMM???_

_EDIT1/3/2022: Touhou Chireikiden culprit revealed, we were so close ;'). However, Mimabros theorized that perhaps the story will continue to unfold in a way where Mima returns to defeat the culprit. Of course, how foolish of me to think that Mima will return as a villain in manga? Surely Mima will return as the HERO. The hope must persevere. _EDIT7/25/2022: Aight lads, it's that time of the year again. A new title dropped a few days ago, and thanks to @Gallalame Blook and @Durision for notifying me in the replies! Truth to be told, I remain skeptical regarding whether Mima will return for this one. The .5 installments i.e. StB, DS, and VD don't usually feature character introductions. Mima, though an existing character from older games, would definitely still need some fresh introduction and lore of her return... Anyway, as speculated by @Gallalame Blook, we still have something to look forward to. With sharp eyes, you may already have spotted something very peculiar about our game's iconic protagonist for this time, Marisa. On the cover art, her eyes, usually golden, now appears red, aligning with her SoEW counterpart in the pre-Windows era... Perhaps this marks an omen, a telling, a vision, where Mima returns...?_
_EDIT10/16/2022: Past few days I have seen few comments mentioning Mima has returned. I've looked into it with a fluttering heart, turns out the said Return of Mima occurred in Touhou LostWord. For those who don't know, Touhou LostWord is a Touhou mobile game with gacha aspects. The game is not developed or published by Team Shanghai Alice, but is indeed licensed by TSA. As a gacha game, Touhou characters are periodically introduced. In last couple of day, community was thrilled to find traces of Mima character inside game files, although no official confirmation at the moment. Woohoo, does this mean the initial objective of this comment has been reached, and MIMA has returned?? Well, let's discuss it a bit. This comment of mine is to keep track of official Touhou titles and forecast the Touhou game with next major revision to be "Return of Mima". On side, the comment also explore any possible indication of Mima's return on official Touhou literary works (including manga and novel alike). For a work to be qualified, ZUN must personally involved in the creative direction of the work, and the work included in Touhou canon lore. This is where I draw the line. The objective is sole and simple - to witness, in Touhou canon lore, Return of Mima. So back to topic, I'm not aware of any possible Touhou LostWord establishment in canon lore, nor did ZUN is involved in creative direction as far as I know. Unless if anyone proves otherwise, I'm not taking this as a victory of the Mimabros, nor is it an fulfillment of the comment's objective... Alas, the track and record of this comment will continue. But many thanks to the fellow Mima bros that informed me in replies of her return in Touhou LW. Although it is not the end of our objectives, it is no less a major step forward. This may be able to rebuke some speculations that said Mima could not return due to copyright issue. I'm assuming that, if Mima is able to return in a officially licensed work of TSA, then surely she can return in the main series itself? The only question, is when? Folks, we will press on. _EDIT4/19/2023: We are back folks, Touhou 19 is announced. I'm pleasantly surprised by the kind comments notifying me. Thanks y'all! This has to be it, I have high hope for this one, as it is a title similar to Phantasmagoria. If you know, the previous Phantasmagoria brought Yuuka from PC-98 to Windows... SURELY this title will also bring someone from PC-98? And who else but dear Mima deserves to be brought over? As pointed out by @superplushtiman 7ti07, the roster has an astonishing number of 19 playable character to choose from! 5 were revealed, 12 more remains undetermined... Statistically speaking, by now Touhou series have ~200 characters (personal estimation, feel free to correct). If we assume everyone has a chance to appear in the roster, going off from there, we can estimate there is a ~0.06% chance one of the 12 characters to be Mima... The odds are not optimistic. BUT WAIT! @ResidentElsen pointed out, the title, Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost. 'GHOST', you say, hMM? Perhaps its finally time for Mima to wake up from her dream?? To work her miracle and finish the history of this comment once and for all??? Fingers crossed! We will see on July!_

To them, I say congratulates, as a fellow Mimabro, I'm grateful to see Mima's appearance in any fanmade doujin games. She deserves more recognition. But for me, it is not yet the end for my pilgrimage. For reason stated in EDIT10/16/2022, I will by no means accept Touhou Lost Word as Return of Mima. Hidden Mima in Four Season. lel.
Reasons why people loved Mima and want her back in the series:
1. She was truly the definition of a great super villain
2. Has a badass boss theme (two in fact)
3. OP character that has the potential to be buffed to modern touhou game standards and become a very interesting and hard boss
also mysterious
1. Eh... I mean, she kinda gave up on killing Reimu after Touhou 2, but she just becomes a jerkass in her last appearance (Touhou 5), which doesn't make it a whole lot better.
2. Three if you count her theme in HRtP... but it's shared with YuugenMagan anyways. Imo, I don't like Reincarnation that much, and Rika technically also has two boss themes, so it's not really something exclusive to Mima.
3. OP? Power levels in Touhou are pretty vague, but we know little about the Pc-98 characters to even consider how strong they are (with the exception of Shinki, who did create Makai, so I'd argue she's even more powerful). She did teach Marisa magic, though, so I guess she's somewhat strong (but once again, we don't really know). If she was in modern Touhou, I guess she could have an interesting boss, but imo I'm not too excited for her return (for various reasons). Let's just hope her character isn't as bad as she was in her last appearance, though (looking at you, Mima's dialogue in Mystic Square).
Personally I'm not so exited to see Mima as much as knowing a bit more about her species: How does one become an evil spirit? Can a magician become one the same way they can become yokai magician? etc.

I read in the wiki (supposedly) that Zun doesn't have the rights to PC-98 characters anymore (excluding Marisa, Reimu & Alice to whom he successfully secured the rights to). I hope that this isn't true, as I wish to see PC-98 era characters in newer entries.

Although she is often called a ghost, Mima denies being dead and tries to explain herself as being "just a soul". In her profiles, she is described as being a "deity-like existence" of the shrine. Though in her Mystic Square good ending, she acknowledges that she is a ghost when alone. Being in spirit form, Mima's magic is most powerful during the night. She claims to want revenge against the entire human race, but it's not known what her motivations for that are. By the present day, most of the evil in her evil spirit has faded off.
Apparently, she is quite knowledgeable about the past of the Hakurei Shrine, even down to knowing exactly what the function of the Yin-Yang Orbs' true power is. Presumably, there is a reason and a story for this, but she's so old that she's forgotten what it was. (from TouhouWiki)

"Mima's theme. There are a few points that I think are promised to last boss themes. Needless to say, it can't be too light, it can't be too simple, and it has to be mysterious, among other things. Of course, that's my opinion, so others may not agree."

ZUN obviously can't put Mima in touhou anymore because her sprite is obviously too complicated to re-create. I mean just look at that staff, it'd take an artist to sprite that, and her spellcards? forget about it. Yuka was lucky she was able to have even one spellcard in PoFV.
Mima didn't have her staff anymore in Mystic Square though, and in PoDD, it only appeared when she cast a spellcard.
just put her in a sidegame or something. let alphes handle that shit. characters with complex designs like kokoro are only in sidegames and the sidegame designs for everyone else (see: miko, mamizou, ichirin) are more detailed. clearly zun is training them for the inevitable mima.
er just to clarify, i was being very sarcastic, mima's sprite and design is easy to put in a sidegame, i wish i knew the reason why ZUN won't put her in one.

PornHub has a lot of really weird uploads, such as "Hairy Man watches Old Man get penetrated by son," which happens to be Han Solo's death scene in The Force Awakens, "Young Redhead gets fisted by Hot Blonde," which is Kakyoin vs DIO in Stardust Crusaders, and the best yet, "My Favorite Character is Nue Honjuu (Houjuu, I know) from Undertale from the Gachimuchi." Basically, Gachimuchi clips + 2hu cosplay porn + a Shrek jumpscare + Death By Glamour.

Mima is actually in Touhou 15 . But to unlock her stage you have to beat the game in Point Device mode 100 times with Marisa without dying or bombing . If you don't shoot at all , you unlock her as a playable character !

Mima, Yuuka, and Alice are all ZUN's original characters. Both Alice and Yuuka came back in Windows games, but there's nothing stopping ZUN from doing the same for Mima. Who knows, maybe there will be a future Touhou game that brings Mima back.

I think the only reason ZUN ditched the 98 characters was so he could kick some newer ones into the spotlight and not just have Mima there every single time.

Actually she might appear if its gonna be another Phantasmagoria game or not, but Cirno will possiblely would also appeard in Touhou 19. If its not maybe Touhou 20 if its yet another not, welp hopes or not i didnt have hopes for Mima coming back because she will did never coming back. There are some incredible Touhou arrangements out there, some that perhaps even surpass their originals, but I've never found a single one that quite reach the same level of the original choruses for Complete Darkness or the first Eternal Shrine Maiden. How ZUN crafted such masterpieces with such limited tools is truly one of a kind.
