Pileated Woodpeckers Amazing Calls

  • Pileated Woodpeckers sounds and calls close-up. Three of them made a rare and exciting visit to the backyard. I got an extended capture of a male - the real "Woody Woodpecker". The other two - one of which was a female made continuous calls for about 5 minutes while the male calmly pecked for food. They are probably a family unit. Very few birds get me as excited as the sudden raucous appearance of the Pileateds!

      I'm in the hills outside of Pittsburgh and I see them from time to time too. I'm watching this now because I saw one just yesterday on my suet feeder. And yes, I love them too. Last one I saw was last year just up the road. However , when I'm in the woods I hear them much more than I see them.

      judith zeid Where’s the best place to hang the suet feeders? I don’t have a deck, but I get Red-Bellied Woodpeckers daily on my wood fence where I put birdseed and peanuts. I bought some suet and feeders and hung 2 of them on my fence, and I’ve seen at least a dozen Red-Bellied Woodpeckers in the past 2 days, eating the birdseed all around the suet, yet they haven’t touched the suet. Should I leave them there or hang them off a tree branch instead?

      @catbirdler Před 3 lety +1

      @@ILive2Rescue I know this reply is a few months late, but the birds will avoid the suet if it's spoiled or gone rancid as it might do in the warmer months. (There are also suet cakes developed to stay good in hot weather.) Try again for the winter with a fresh suet cake that has a mixture of nuts and seeds in it, and good luck!

    With it's bright red head and top knot, the Pileated Woodpecker LOOKS like Woody Woodpecker; but Woody's call is much more like the Acorn Woodpecker, whose call has the rising ah, ah, ah, AH ha (but faster). Also, the Acorn is more social and livelier than the Pileated Woodpecker that flaps noisily between the trees around my home. (I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California's Bay Area.) The Acorn is also VERY aggressive, easily intimidating the larger Stellar Jays that visit my bird bath during our dry summer months. Notwithstanding their differences, woodpeckers are fun to have around.

In fact, although Northern Flickers have been regular (although not daily) feeders over the years, I had never seen a Pileated Woodpecker until one landed on my deck last week, apparently calling for food I didn't have. Either my feeders were not large enough or he didn't feel safe here yet. But he returned a few nights later, so I'm prepared for his next visit and hope he blesses me with his presence more often. Once I was camping and we have a gold cart so we drives by a campsite and found a wood pecker pecking on some campers wood for fire at first we thought it was one of those fake stand up decoration woodpeckers but nope we sat and got really up close to to it! It was awesome!

    great video.We had one here as well,male working very hard( female visited on occasion) ,but he abandoned the tree,since we had an issue with roof and too many people on it,so he left.He is still in our area,I can hear him and have seen him as well.

      Thanks. You are fortunate to have seen that close up. A lot of work went into pecking that tree too bad it moved on.

    I remember these beautiful guys from northeastern Ohio where I grew up. I remember the "knocking" sound of the wood too, but I am not sure if they were from this woodpecker or not.

      @mothertree Před 7 lety

      I see them 2 or 3 times a week here in Northeast Ohio.I have even got to see the young flying with the parents...what a nice sight.I even got to see a red hawk try to attack a big pileated one time and the two ended up in a great dog fight and the pileated put on a show of agility with loops and barrel rolls then flybacks that made the hawk dizzy until he flew away embarrassed...what a sight...then the pileated went right back to feeding again!

    I have one I see at my feeder everyday. He’s like a pet. One year he raised two offsprings with a mate. Even their fight pattern s strange. Never a straight line they dart downward and then swoop back up. First time the other half saw this guy ......freak out. WTF is that dinosaur chicken thing?

    I hear this a lot in my north central AL yard. Redheaded woodpeckers telling the blue jay this is THEIR hood.

    We have loads of these here in Jax. Seems like everyday around certain time around for 5 in the afternoon they fly through the yard chasing each other making the crazy racket noise. There are really are big, you kinda have to see one in person to get an appreciation for how big they really are.
    Want to hear a truly bizarre sounding bird, listen to a Barred Owl. Like the city zoo had an escape of chimpanzees and monkeys. Off the wall, crazy noises don't sound like any bird I've ever heard.
