Great tutorial, and a fantastic way to upcycle. I don't wear jeans, but I do have some leftover fabrics that I think will work. Adding this to my "crafts I might actually try someday" playlist for future reference 🙂
This video is fantastic. I really appreciate you tilting your work for multiple points of view. That is so helpful & I wish more people did their videos like this.
You have no idea, how much this helped me understand how to crochet the baskets. i have been looking and this popped up on my feed today. Thank you for showing how it is done!
This is one of the BEST tutorials I've ever seen, your instructions are clear, concise and the speed you crochet allows us to really see what and how you make this basket. Thank you ! 👏👏👏💜 p.s. wonderful MUSIC!
This has probably been a thing for a very long time, but a couple of decades ago i thought of using this method on my own after trying to figure out how some rag rugs were made, which i now know are weaved on a loom. Makes lovely rugs.
I’ve wanted so badly to do the pine needle basket thing, but its so small and fiddly, i think it might give me a nervous breakdown lol! Not to mention my pup would surely eat it, she thinks that anything that comes from outside is fair game, but she's a real pine connoisseur 🤣
Thanks for this tutorial. I also appreciate all the examples of different variations at the end. Using different colors of yarn (or a color-changing yarn) produces a very attractive result.
I used to love working with denim; I made a bag out of old jeans when I was 15; I got so many compliments on it! Thank you for another idea to recycle and make a beautiful piece of art at the same time!
Awesome video. Very well thought out and demonstrated. Thank you for sharing your handiwork. I have been wanting to make fabric coiled baskets out of recycled fabric, especially jeans. Lovely sweet helper, Ophelia! 💕
Recycling: a creative hobby and a useful product. Fantastic! You remind me of my Gram! (Maternal Grandmother). I am tired of the current circumstances where no matter what you pay for products they expire too soon! .... only last a month, a year, for two years or five at best! ....trying to PLUS SELL short term product protection at time of purchase. Our systems are broken and need to change! ... all systems need to change! We must be part of the change. The couch is comfortable, but things will only get worse if we continue to do nothing. Products once serviced users. Now we serve the products’ producers. We are slaves! Work to acquire...leads to work to live... in some cases leads to no work... at any stressful stage leads to illness... early death for some ... and more with each generation. We have choices! Some of the products that were produced before I was born continue to do what they were designed for ....with regular maintenance and replacement parts. I embrace NECESSARY change ... but I cannot accept or endorse the production of goods and services that misuse resources and are not upgradable, waste precious resources and end up in landfill ... the creators of today continue to make money in our artificial systems .... we are slaves to these producers .... We have never be truly free. Some of us have benefited from the illusion of being free. THERE are MORE of US then there are of THEM!!! Yet WE DO NOTHING! We watch the corruption, are directly and indirectly affected by it yet we do nothing... ??? We deserve what we pursue. We are reaping it now. We have CHOICES! We can be compliant, we can be tech zombies, and continue to be slaves to this system .... or any other system... ..... OR WE CAN BE PART OF THE CHANGE. There are prices to be paid. YES, and they do not have to be radical! Like CANCER TREATMENT, we do not need to kill all the cells with chemotherapy to have change...we can have targeted change .... like a laser. We all have choices. Choose with your dollars, your voice, your support, your humanity and with investment in the future of our children. They deserve better lives not empty dreams and promises like that of white picket fences that have been baited and switched! Instead of being a cancer to each other and the world we can be the pursuers of change that benefits most instead of a few!
For the number of repeats, what works well for me is : row 1 ->6 repeats. Row 2->2repeats in each bridge (double). Row 3->1 double, then 1 repeat in one(single). Row 4->1 double, 2 singles. Row 5->1 double, 3 singles. Row 6->1 double, 4 singles. And you just go on adding one single for each row. (Not sure if it makes sense how I've written, but yeah XD)
Great idea! I have a bunch of heavy material (upholstery, corduroy, etc) that will be ideal for this type of project! Guess what I'm going to be making this year for Christmas gifts? Thanks bunches for sharing!!! ☺️💞
Much love to you, nice to see this video. I’m losing mobility in my fingers and I hope that doing crafts like this at my own pace, might help. Thanks for making this thorough tutorial! I’ll be able to follow this and make my own basket.
I am really surprised! For sure I will try. Thank for share this beautiful technique. Also I love the music, remind me of the melancholy of Mexican charros.
Hey there and thanks for posting your idea regarding the bias tape maker. After reading it, since I didn't know what it was, lol, I watched a video on how to use one. I wanted to know what size tape maker could be used. I crochet alot and this really looked like something I could make a ton of things with. Thanks again!
Cheers from New Orleans!! I make dolls out of fabric scraps and found items..They are beautiful and one of a kind..I am always looking for new denim inspiration!! Many thanks for this post, dear...
Yes i can crotchet have 6 pairs jeans my husband dont fit anymore as his bodies shrunk to small mens now wow this is awesome subscribed an on playlist saved thankyou not for the faint hearted goodluck to those who can crotchet
I really like that technique, looks like it goes quick once you get started. I have wool and linen scraps leftover from medieval garments; wonder if the technique would work with them? (You couldn't do the tear method so likely it would take much longer.) I might use a white t-shirt to make bathroom organizers. Thank you for the ideas!
I've even made an oversized handbag out of an old robe..with the pocket on the front. With a beautiful cross..and extra robe material made the shoulder strap.
🤗, i got to try this to make my own yarn bowl! And a big one for to store whatever project i currently could be working on with a lid to hide it in for tidyness! I think a froggy would look nice in my livingroom, 😃!
I cut the seams out and have been saving for a few years and now have a way to recycle then, should make extra firm baskets maybe a purse with a fabric liner.
Dude, this is so cool! Thank you! Also, do you think this would work with corduroy? I like to have a little basket full of goodies to leave in the guest bedroom for folks, and this will be perfect! 💚🙏🕊
I’d use a dab of fabric glue to the overlapping ends just to keep it from sliding when trying to hold both bits together. I can’t crochet though cos I’m left handed & I have never been able to do it.
@@graceswan4353 I have tried umpteen times I can make a fantastic thimble knotted lump but nothing comes out right. I’ll still to sewing. All my Children & Grandchildren don’t wear home knitted stuff now anyway.
I like the tube to draw it up but Im doing on machine. I see many using scraps to wrap rope but I dont want to buy a product to use a product. Since I make jean totes and bags I have denim scraps. Im going to try zig zag as most seem to do but I may try a stitch that could imitate this like a blanket stitch! Tube the best idea otherwise some first braid fabric then sew in coils!
Thank you so much for creating and sharing this video. I knew it was possible to do this but couldn’t make my mind remember how so I’ve been searching for weeks, every word combination I could imagine!! I can’t begin to tell you how delighted I am right now! Varina, I will be thanking you with each project I make using your teaching. ❤
This technique would also make nice thick coasters!

Amazing idea of reusing old pairs of jeans. I’m more interested in this because it looks sturdy and I want to make one for my cat.
GREAT idea! Tx
Great idea. Put it on a place u DONT want your cat to be
I've made one for my cat and my small dog. They're pretty sturdy
