    Grew up in Meriden Ct, lived there until I was 20, moved around a bit and settled in western ma. Up here I can afford 2 acres and log home, barn and horses. I cannot afford to have this in CT. Most have tiny little yards. I do return to Ct for the coastline, Hammonasett beach. It's beautiful but gets super crowded now. Most of the coastline is private for super rich. You really need to make a 6 figure salary to live comfortably in CT. Otherwise, you'll end up in crowded expensive dumpy town along 91 corridor. Income gap is huge here. Most are poor or lower middle class but can see how nice the elite have it so they chase it and work their lives away. Most of my friends I left behind are workaholics and alcoholics. They work and drink, oh and most have gotten fat by now (I'm 48 now). They work so much that on their day off they do house chores and then hit the bars or sit home and drink. They are just not into the outdoors. But CT does have some nice state parks and again the coast. Ski mountains are very small and crowded. I use to take train into NY city and that was awesome, I miss that. But Hartford and New Haven are so dumpy and gross, crime filled. I lived in New Haven area where I went to college and I worked in Hartford for a year after graduation, definitely more job opportunities in CT than western ma but the commute sucks bad, housing expensive and taxes super high. The cons do outweigh the pros. But hey, if your a mega millionaire, some of the nicer towns are in Fairfield area, litchfield area and coastline like stonington or old Saybrook. I knew at young age I would never ever be able to afford nice home like that so I left. You can literally spend a lifetime chasing a dream that will never actualize. Be realistic and practical before moving to this state. If you like to slave away long 60 hour work weeks and then end your day in a bar, crawl home to your dumpy overpriced small apt, then this is for you. People are rude, aggressive, greedy and not friendly at all. Don't move here to make friends, you'll be very disappointed, unless you love to get drunk or do drugs, then you'll fit in. Oh and I can't forget to mention all the welfare ghettos in all the crime filled cities. There's a huge population that doesn't work, they have like 10 kids and live off those work 60 hours a week. They throw trash in their own yards and spray paint graffiti all over their neighborhood. They like it that way. So then you get to look at it and wonder...wth am I doing here?

      Wow that was a long rant but only one persons opinion. I live in a small rural town in CT- I own a log home here on 3 acres and work in CT- I have a family enjoy spending time with them and certainly don’t hit the bars after work or at all lol. I grew up here and it is possible to have a nice home and life in CT. I am not mega rich by any stretch of the imagination but worked hard for what I have. Anything is possible.

      Get a commuter-style bicycle, adjust by riding around town. When you need to add distance, visit the neighboring town. If your town has bus service, they'll likely have bike racks. Ride the bus to the far end of their route and start your bike ride there. Bike shops are friendly, will be happy to give suggestions based on your level.

    This is something I was told recently after I moved here 17 years ago. If your not “from here”? Your not really welcome here. My wife & I have lived here in the same house & in all that time we have never been invited over any of our neighbor’s homes. We have tried making friends but for whatever reason? They view us with suspicion? They call it “yankee reserve”. So if you don’t mind making friends & like living in isolation? Come on in? The friends we met from Connecticut before we arrived are the same ones we are friends with thirty years later.

    How do we drive in the snow? How many inches of snow do you get per winter? What are the economy, jobs an unemployment rate in Hartford? Thanks!

    • @johnclyne6350
      @johnclyne6350 Před 3 lety +3

      They drive like crap. We hardly get any snow but when we do it’s either a dusting or more than a few inches. With the advent of SUV’s most think that if they have all wheel drive that they have all wheel stop? Those that drive cars have either all seasons or drive on bald tires. They zig zag up hills creating a traffic hazard.
      As for the economy? We moved here with a job already in hand. I couldn’t comment for the others? As I wouldn’t know? I will tell you that the mil rate in the cities is higher. Hartford had the highest mil rate of $70 for every thousand dollars of value. You might be able to afford a house in Hartford but the taxes are killer. The other annoying thing is property taxes on vehicles. All these years later & we pay taxes to the towns we live in to own a car. I’m not talking sales tax- property tax. Twice a year you pay taxes to own a car. I live in a city so my mil rate is half that of Hartford. I unknowingly bought my first new truck 16 years ago. A Chevy truck. Almost loaded. My property taxes my fist year to park it in my garage & hardly use it was $1100 for the year. 16 years I was paying between $1000 & $500 a year to park it in my garage. After all these years later I still pay $500 a year to park it in my garage. What do I get for it? Nothing. It helps the town’s keep the property taxes from climbing. Would I ever own a new vehicle in CT.? Never! The property taxes are killer. We live in a average size house & between my property taxes to own one old & one very old vehicle & a house is over $8000 for the year. If that’s a bargain? Come on over?

    • @godness7770
      @godness7770 Před 3 lety +2

      @@johnclyne6350 thank you so much for your honest opinion. I would not want pay that much just to keep a car in my garage. In NC we only pay to renew taxes and title sicker once a year. That is only $40, depends how big your car is. Okay, I thought CT gets a lot of a snow. But, now I know it doesn't. To drive in the snow in NC is slippery because there's more ice, frozen black ice here. Just one inch, they start canceling schools. If it snow more, they don't have much plow trucks so, if you can't get out. You are stuck until the snow melts here. At least there's plenty of jobs there. I really appreciate your answers. I don't think I want to come live there at all.

    • @johnclyne6350
      @johnclyne6350 Před 3 lety +3

      North Carolina? I have a retired friend from NY, that moved to Cary, N.C. He loves it there. The most snow he got there was 3”. He has lived there for 12 years. He says the folks down there don’t know how to drive in snow? Do you agree? He also told me that his town taxes were $2200 for the year. The other is he told me whenever you buy say a piece of fruit from the grocery store? You pay tax on that. He also said that each town has one plow for the whole town? He just knows by the next day it’s all gone.
      Yes, there are hidden taxes here that are “Gotcha’s”. N.Y. taxes are through the roof. But we all knew that without the “ Gotcha’s”. Connecticut went up $10 registration fee on all motor vehicles to offset the cost of CT. parks. That’s because the costs to run parks was climbing & people stopped going to parks because the fee was too high? We don’t go to CT. state parks. So we are cross subsidizing those that do?
      I just got a new tax in my paycheck for $18.22 every pay period to pay for a fund for family leave? I pay for others to get paid family leave. We have it through my employer already. So, it doesn’t benefit me. Do the math on that? That’s over $500 out of my hard earned money to pay for someone else’s benefit. That’s only fair if you agree with the states logic? Penalize the many to benefit the few?

    • @Kv-pk2st
      @Kv-pk2st Před 3 lety +2

      Depends on what you do for a living. The economy is pretty much based on how Pratt, Sikorsky, and electric boat are doing. Also depends on what part of the state you want to live in. Taxes are incredibly High. Pay taxes on your house, car, Almost everything you buy. State income tax. The poorer the town the higher the tax rate.

    a major negative of Connecticut is corruption in government, which is rampant at the state and also at the local levels. And part of that problem is oversight of the police, which is approximately non-existent. Here in Connecticut, the police (both state and local) do whatever they want, and also they don't do whatever they want. The police are very bad in Connecticut. Overly aggressive, lawless, poorly trained, and nasty. Basically - the police work for the lawyers, the politicians, and the realtors. In some places, such as Westport, they also work for the "celebrity beautiful people". Both government corruption, and police misconduct are VERY major problems in Connecticut - at the state and local levels.
