That last clip is why you ALWAYS wear a life jacket on a small craft. Things happen way faster than you think, and you do not want to be making decisions in an emergency.

Right. I know from experience. Bad stuff happens fast. And when I was in the water I wanted my life jacket worse than I wanted to be back in my boat. Having them "in the boat somewhere in case we get stopped" is not enough.

When I did water safety classes for adults I tried to emphasize that of course kids should always wear life jackets, but if the kid goes over you are going to turn around to find them, if you go over the kid might never get the boat back to you so if you don't have a life jacket that kid might be an orphan. Wear the jackets all the time.
man this series is great. makes you respect a military branch that not a lot of people will even acknowledge.
They are armed forces, and thus military, but they are under DHS and not DOD.

@@enthusia492 I learned "circumlocution" and "euphemism" (had heard it but not really thought about it) both in etymology class long ago, etymology being more or less the study of meanings/origins of words. Circum = around (circle, circumference), I think "locu"(?) = to talk ("eloquent"). So it's to "talk around". I think Destin's phrase is also a euphemism (eu = good). If you get a good handle on etymology, you can figure out/remember a lot of words.
8:17 the sense of *URGENCY* the SECOND they heard 'no pulse' - truly grateful we have these guys whether we like them or not on weekends like this, they're ultimately here to keep you alive and able to see the next day... kudos to them, they truly are heroes on the water!
even if someone is perfectly fit, confident, current and fully equipped having the coast guard around is awesome, because they are there for "the others", that are lacking, like those guys with the rented jet skies. Until stuff happens and a captain realizes that their nutshell is floating in the middle of nowhere with a technical malfunction and needs saving. Ultimatly, is good to think about such a service in the common goal: No body wants to end up in a serious incident.
@@sarowie I never get the lack of appreciation or even respect for any service that is installed for the sole purpose of public safety. I see it like an airbag in my car. I never want to see that thing up close, but in some unexpected and highly unwanted case, it might be the thing I am grateful for when it was there. So thinking about it, I am glad it is there when I need it.
And same with helping others in emergency situations, like that boater on the Adelaide (not sure if I got the name right) did. Not only while boating, but on the road in traffic or anywhere. I will go out and help someone, who for example got into an accident or is sufffering from a helath issue, just because I hope if I happen to need help, someone will do the same.
@@alexanderkupke920 It is the invasive 4th amendment breaking "safety" checks. The main purpose of the Coast Guard, Police, ... might be to proved emergency safety services, but when they have lots of down time and spend it being busy body hall monitors issuing citations that can cost you hundreds to thousands of dollars, it hurts the public relations.

@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 sometimes a good natured joke is a much better lesson then a harsh talk. Getting the shoes and hat back is a good one - it shows that the cost guard, real people, are out there that do not mind saving you, but also: that could all that there could have been to save and they are lucky, that they are just a small note in the annual report, not a "could not be saved".

Coast Guard always gets a lot of flak from other branches, but this series has really helped to break the misconceptions. Glad they are patrolling our waters.
All of the branches do that in peace time, it's just a thing. Everyone in service respects the coasties for what they do, period. A little ribbing now and again just happens. They are our last line of defense in the event of terrible things, but they're out there, every day, saving people and all service members know it.

@@yammmit That really depends on the kid and their mental age. It's not good to over shelter a child because it's only a matter of time before they discover the things you're trying to protect them from whether you've prepared them for it or not. That said there's nothing wrong with keeping a young child from seeing things that are overtly violent or trying to limit how much bad language they hear (then repeat at the most inappropriate times). Once they're ready you start introducing more 'adult' topics but make it clear how you feel about such topics, what's appropriate, what's not.
A lot of media glorifies alcohol, drugs, and violence and without guidance will lead children to becoming the worst types of adults. A lot of media is also bigoted and a good chunk of media pretends to be anti-bigotry while actually promoting a different type of bigotry. With few exceptions the goal of media (be it traditional news, web articles, scientific journals, or video services including TV, Movies, and CZcams) is to sell us something and making us emotional about things (especially if they can make us angry and/or scared) while conveniently hiding key details is extremely effective whether they're selling you a product or an idea (which will almost certainly lead to the sales of products that the media organization or it's constituents are invested in).

Um, Destin Florida is Not a coast guard station, it's a state pal, that just happens to have a coast guard station there.
14:33 that's why you wear the lifejackets and make sure everybody is before you leave the dock... I have the same rule when I drive: "My car doesn't start and we don't leave until everyone has their belts on."
You will notice the coasties themselves or always wearing lifejackets for this reason.
My rule is "if you don't wanna wear a seatbelt, then be prepared to be turned into ground meat."

As with many things, risk profile is worth considering. Coast guards at least where I am also wear helmets all the time -- should we all be wearing helmets as well?
The obvious answer is no. The coast guard wears them because the activities they undertake are by nature high risk, so safety equipment is necessary, just like life jackets.
Generally speaking, recreational boating is generally a low risk activity, so its not always necessary to wear life jackets or helmets ALL the time. Sometimes it may be advisable, like in rough conditions or high risk watersports, but let's not all be ridiculous and suggest that life jackets should be worn by EVERYONE at ALL times in ALL circumstances within shouting distance of a boat. Its just not necessary.
I've been living in destin for 6 years and work on the beach. Ive seen too many lives lost in that water. So I truly thank you for bringing awareness and safety to some of the dangers people may face.

@@lostmykeys85 They are paid a salary but each one of them still had to volunteer for the job. I am not military myself but I think that's how the saying goes.
@@MrJuanDover Coasties are military just like any other service, the pay grades are the same. They volunteered at the recruiting office and then became subject to the UCMJ like all other service members. The Coast Guard is "that small nucleus around which the Navy forms in times of war" and was established in 1790 by Alexander Hamilton. Tons of history behind the CG.

My grandparents passed away last month and we used to visit them in Destin every summer. It's a strange nostalgia seeing a place I recognize so well from such a different perspective.
Every experience I've had with the coast guard there around crab island has been super nice.

@@generalvestal1885 If you ship anytime soon, look out for SK1 Koerner, OS1 Santana, and AMT1 Haro. They were my Company Commanders. Try to be on your game in front of SK1 especially, he will hem you up. Know your general orders, scream your face off, move fast, and live, eat, breathe recruit comms.
just FYI if you care about money then the coast guard is the last branch to join. it's very difficult to rank up in the coast guard and takes quite a long time. you'll more than likely spend your first year or two on a cutter which sucks and the pay is low. it's a rad job though.
@@CRneu in general I'd agree, but it also depends on the rate you choose. If you go CS, you can make chief in like 6 or 7 years. Choose a critical rate and you'll fly, we're hurting for numbers like any other branch.
And while it is a decent chance that you could be on a cutter for a couple years, it's not guaranteed at the moment. About half my graduating class got stations, it all comes down to the needs of the CG and we need quite a few in stations for some reason

LIFE JACKETS - just imagine if people wore them when out on open water instead of storing them away. This is why the auto-inflate life vests are so popular now (among those smart enough to wear them); they don't restrict movement, are light and small until one needs it.

My most sincere and heartfelt thanks to all members of the Coast Guard. Thank you for doing what you do.
We've always had a boat of some kind and my dad was always super intense about making sure the boat was prepped. I learned at a young age a few things about boating:
1. Most boaters don't know nearly enough to be trusted to operate a water vessel
2. Coast Guard can and will just board you at any time and if you don't have what you need, you can get into a wide variety of trouble
3. People mix alcohol and boating and legit think that DUIs can't happen on water, until it does.
Those guys flirted with disaster by not wearing the life jackets while fishing. It's just easier to invest in the auto-inflate ones that you barely feel wearing. Drowning is a terrible way to die.
Dangerous freedom is always more preferable.
Inflatable life jackets are awesome! Not in the way at all. Sometimes even forget to undress the life jacket on land. 😁

Really resonate with how he explained the danger of currents. Out on the Pacific coast where I live, the undertow is very strong and rip currents claim tourists every year.

There is a "crab island" about every 30 miles along the FL coastline. It's always next to "beer can island". ha ha!! 😂

Love the series. Its fascinating to see the behind the scenes look at everything the Coast Guard does.
50 years ago I had my 9th birthday on what I guess we call Crab Island today. We were the only boat there and there certainly wasn't a Coast Guard station anywhere nearby. We found a live conch... left it alone, of course. Used to see porpoises close to the pass all the time. I have great memories of water skiing in Rocky and Cinco bayous. And scary memories of almost getting capsized when we took our 24 foot wellcraft out the pass when the tides were exactly wrong. I spent a fair amount of time out on the gulf in small sails and not-quite-as-small ski-boats, not far from where that boat capsized.
I get back to Destin / Ft. Walton every couple years and am always amazed by how it's grown. When I was a kid in the 70s, there was a Hardee's, a cinema out on Eglin parkway, the Gulfarium, a small dock in Destin, the Hawaii Kai and not much else. I remember when they built the Santa Rosa mall and we were SO excited. The place was like a magnet for local teens.
Thx for the trip down memory lane. Also very cool to see the CG out doing their jobs. I have to think Destin is the type of assignment you get if you've done a good job (the same way that Dutch Harbor has to be punishment for messing up.)
Man, the folks of the Coast Guard put in serious work every single day. They do NOT get the respect they deserve.
I'm also glad that boaters look out for each other, help each other. Been in situations where a boater passing by helped out myself and hope to someday be able to pay that forward to someone else.

The boat that rescued the capsized vessel is the “Outta Line”, a local fishing charter boat run by Captain Trey Windes. He’s an excellent captain and an amazing fisherman. His father, Kelly Windes is a local legend here in Destin, FL.
Destin's point about operating a vessel and not drinking alcohol couldn't be more spot on. Situations can change so fast just like the boat that sunk suddenly.

Local here. I see and hear about this all the time. If anyone ever visits our beautiful area please be responsible, clean up after yourself, be safe, and if you rent a boat please know how to operate one. Crab Island is no joke during peak tourist season. This is only a small portion of what happens every single day. There are drownings, there are capsized boats, and wrecks, and too many drunks operating vessels that are way out of their experience in driving. We love it here and love everyone coming to visit but please respect the place we live that you come to visit. Have fun and shop local. We survive from all you beautiful people supporting our arts and trades and service to make your stay here as special as it can be. Much love!

This is so good! Watched these through when they came out and am re-watching the series. Would love to see you get some of the cold weather Coast Guard activities in the winter on the Great Lakes added to this series. Cold weather rescues, ice breaking, etc. Great series! Keep them coming!

This series is a weird one for me, because I had a bad experience with the coast guard when I was a kid. Was out with my dad and adult cousin in out 18ft skiff. We were "pulled over" by a coast guard boat in choppy water. They cited us for expired flares, which was fine, they were expired. But then, in their report that we received a copy of, they said that my dad was yelling and swearing at them, which could not have been farther from the truth. He was quiet, respectful, and honestly very scared (we were also drifting towards some rocks the whole time). The whole thing was performed in a very intimidating manner. This was in Alaska by the way, not somewhere with a smuggling problem or something. My dad took this pretty hard, and I've just never understood why they lied about it.

The Coast Guard might stop and board 20 or 30 boats in one day - the boarding officer obviously got two people mixed up when he wrote up the reports later that night, or the next day.
So what? Its not like your dad was arrested or charged so something he didnt do.

There are only 2 outcomes when the Coast Guard decides to board your boat, either you let them inspect for safety gear (14 USC 89) or you decline and your trip gets terminated and you go back home.
Worked as a paramedic in Oklahoma County back in 2018-2021. Crab Island was a nightmare. Lived in Miramar Beach and loved every minute!

Many many props to the Adeline for picking up the capsized boaters. There are too many people who would simply wave and maybe call the coast guard with their only thought being that it's not their responsibility. IMO it IS their responsibility simply as part of boating. Simply being HUMAN.
I once had the good fortune to get to know American Coast Guards stationed in Spain. A small base near the village of Estartit in northern Spain. So hello to Roger from Detroit, Rusty from Texas and Beaver from Colorado. Awesome memories guys. TY for looking after a green traveller.
A lot of people mistakenly think a small boat sinks by going straight down. The stability of a sinking boat depends on its roll angle. Up to a certain roll angle, it will be stable and try to self-right itself (keep the top pointed up). But if you exceed that angle, it becomes unstable and flips upside-down (which is why you see the capsized boat floating bottom-up). That threshold angle decreases as you add more weight and water aboard the boat. So the "feel" you've learned during normal operation about how much the roll the boat can tolerate and still self-right, goes out the window if it's heavily loaded (e.g. more passengers than normal) or it's taken on water. Movable weight like passengers and water are especially bad because they will fall towards the lower side of the boat, exacerbating its tendency to tip over. In contrast a fixed weight on the high side will try to right the boat.

Destin...love your channel and the series. When something happens to your car, you pull over and get out to deal with it. When something happens to your boat, well... you can't pull over...or get out (by choice). Many boaters don't have the respect for the hazards of the water (which this video shows can happen FAST). Fellow boaters and the Coast Guard become instant saviors when things go bad on the water. Those that serve in the Coast Guard quietly protect all of us that are privileged to be able to enjoy the water for our occupation or recreation. Thank you Coast Guard.

One thing to clarify- the CG can't just board your boat and rummage through just whatever. There are specific places they are allowed to look. Personal spaces - wardrobe in the berthing area for example - are off limits. And it should he that way. The CG can look in places relates to safety only.

Up in Michigan we deal with the Coast Guard all the time and it's crazy just how much they do. Up here in the north there's the added fun of the winter. We have two helicopter stations along with the boat stations and they do so much more than you would think.
