- Part 2 of "The Superb Ham Radio QRP-labs QCX-Mini tweaked for maximum enjoyment."
The ideal Ham radio transceiver is something so small, lightweight and powerful that you can carry it in your pocket and forget its there.
If its also a joy to use and produces world-class performance, then that’s a huge bonus!
If again you can buy it for around £50 and build it yourself in an afternoon then you are talking about something of Legend status.
The QCX-Mini from QRP-Labs is all of these rare things.
Honestly, I’m amazed how good this little rig is!
-- and its even more amazing with a £6 AGC module installed!
In this video we install the AGC hardware and configure it to work effectively.
I also explain in more detail, what I got wrong when first building the rig -- as a learning point for others who may wish to build their QCX-Mini.
Enjoy

going to build this soon, thanks for the help.
Very good video that is nicely filmed!
Thank you!
Many thanks.
I've been doing Videos now for about 18 months but I'm still at the beginning of a long journey.

@@G4ABX I just finished yesterday my 30m version, also with AGC. I was lucky all was working, just needed to adjust it. Now I have to learn CW 😉
Wow…. Awesome mod. I’ve built the QDX…. And currently building a QCX plus for 160m. My 40m QCX MINI I trashed …. Installed same T1 incorrectly and trashed board trying to extricate it ! 73 de VK2AOE
That T1 is quite a challenge -- and the lower freq the band, the thinner the wire and the greater the difficulty!
I will order the new QMX as a Winter project :-)

Thank you!
It is hard to imagine better evidence that AGC works =)
Absolutely -- but it does and for a few $, its well worth incorporating as you build

Thank you very much for this video! I’ve got the 40m version and this is my first build. Once I’ve got the jacks buttoned down, I’ll be ready to install the AGC. 73! Tim VE1XR
Excellent Tim
You will definitely enjoy this little rig

Very good video, thanks for doing it, I’m about too fit mine 👍
It's not too difficult. Just take your time -- and don't drop any cut wires into the board!

@G4abx
Tnx for sharing. I've ordered now one for my new QCXmini 40m, 73 de Wolf, oe7ftj
Good evening Wolf.
You won't be disappointed!
Just take your time with both winding and soldering T1 to the main board. It's the only 'tricky' part of the build.
Adjusting the balance potentiometers is easy once you get started. Take your time and go back and forth at least 5 times to optimise adjacent sideband rejection. Each pot's adjustment affects the other.
And if you need any help, feel free to email me :-)

@@G4ABX My QCXmini is already assembled and in operation. But I've forgotten to order the AGC module at the same time. 73
@@wolfholler9939 You REALLY need the AGC module or you will go Deaf using it on 40M 🙂
It's easy to install the module yourself. The AGC module has its own set of instructions on Hans's Web site
Best of luck

@@G4ABX Hi Bruce, all done. AGC module installed and aligned. Works perfect and I will be prevented from acoustic damage ;-) 73 Wolf, OE7FTJ
Great. Another set of ears preserved for future continued use 🙂

What type/size wire did you use for soldering the AGC?
I used off cuts from the components used to construct the rig in the first place -- as I installed the AGC board at the same time a building the rig.
Any tin plate wire of appropriate diameter can be used.
