    What's up everyone, we are Naomi and Jack 👋
    We are a young married couple who are all about personal growth.
    In summer 2020, amidst a global pandemic, we uprooted our lives in Central London and decided to move to Northern Sweden.
    We were fed up of living on top of millions of other people in London, living out of one room in a flat shared with Naomi's parents, all whilst studying, working, creating CZcams content and launching our business.
    So we bought a car, packed it full of our belongings, and drove nearly 3000km to Sweden with no idea where we were going to live.
    This year we are taking time out of studying Medicine and Law to pursue our business, BEAUTYNOIR, the Afro-Caribbean hair and beauty directory helping women to book beauty better.
    So join us as we share and document our journey through film.
    We are so pleased to share our journey with you and hope to build a community of people who can support one another and grow together.
    Lots of love

    Salt is kind of pointless where you live. It lowers the melting point a bit but when the temperature reaches -10 the snow you have turned into water freezes, making your driveway even more slippery. Use gravel instead.
    And do not throw out ANYTHING that can burn. Turn it into heat in your burner instead. Crumpled news paper pages with cardboard on top is a brilliant fire starter.

    Some tips regarding the snowblower.
    When first snow comes, use your car or anything heavy and compact the snow and use the big rake/shovel to smoothen it out (we had gravel on our land as well).
    Then you are going to need a proper snowblower. That little thing in northern Sweden is not going to help you when you wake up to one meter of snow one morning, and another meter before the week is over. I'm from a small village near Luleå (65.6090105,21.6939062) and spent my teenage years dragging one of those heavy things around. By springtime (May) you are going to have a 10-20 cm thick sheet of ice all over the plot, you will find your grass again by June.
    It might be a good idea to ask around your neighbors and find out who has a tractor, you are going to need their help when you have a meter thick wall of ice blocking your entryway after the snowplow has passed by your house.

  • @squimped
    @squimped Před 3 lety +72

    It's been said here in the comments, but I'll repeat some of the points for visibility. Do not salt your driveway - there's no way you'll be able to remove the snow during winter that way. You may melt some of it if it isn't too cold, but the end result will be an even worse situation as the melted snow turns to ice. Instead compact the first snow as much as possible and use fine gravel/sand to add friction. Caring for your driveway here in northern Sweden is more of sand/gravel logistics problem as this will have to be done regularly. It is also a good idea to keep a smaller bucket with sand (get one with a lid) in your car in case you get stuck somewhere. If you don't know where to get sand/gravel, ask your neighbours. In some places the kommun will have a free pickup spot, though that varies from place to place. Living in a small village often means getting your buckets of sand every time you go to town for shopping. For extra credits, get some snow chains to keep in the car just in case you find yourself in a situation where a little bit of sand isn't enough. I also always have some extra clothes in the car just in case - when it's -20 or colder breaking down on smaller roads can be a real pain, and if you don't have proper clothing it can be deadly (something my dad often repeated to me as it was only luck that saved him once in his youth).

      @AdeleMcAlear Před 3 lety +1

      Good advice here! Yes to extra clothes in the car. Perhaps also a blanket & extra gloves. I used to keep a little can with a candle & matches as not only a small heat source, but a way to melt snow for water. Keep some emergency food. A packet of ramen, some energy bars etc. Things that will be ok if they freeze and easy to open/eat if you're stuck. Another thing good for gripping if you're stuck in your car is cat litter (easy to throw a small bag in your car). At home, you can also use fireplace ash to melt and provide some traction.

  • @AdeleMcAlear
    @AdeleMcAlear Před 3 lety +3

    Canadian here: 1) that snowblower is not going to cut it. You'll need a bigger one that is gas/petrol-powered. Once the snow is compacted, it won't be chewing up the grass & rocks especially if you find one where you can adjust the height of the blades. 2) Don't salt on the grassy area or you'll kill your grass. Use sand or tiny gravel/grit. For walkways/stairs, you can use a combination of sand & salt. You only need to apply it when necessary if you find yourself slipping. 3) Tires - you should invest in winter tires, especially as you don't have a 4 wheel drive car. You could also invest in chains. Ask your Swedish neighbours how they prepare their driveways and cars for winter (ex. anti-freeze).

      @@NaomiandJack The thing is that you are too covered up, the sun only gets at your face and that isn't enough. The skin on both your hands is about the same area as your face. wearing a hat and gloves takes away like 60% of the skin area compared to being outside on a UK winter. So its hard to get enough even if you spend all day outside. Adding a little vitamin D will help a lot for your wellbeing. You might feel fine now but remember it's a long winter.

    hi I live in Maine in the USA. We also have a gravel driveway. We find that you can only do the top layer of snow with a snow blower. If you just use the snow blower it will tend not to let you get down to gravel or dirt. You might end up with a drive way that is mostly smooth ice because of the freeze and thaw cycle. We find that to get down to the gravel we use the scoop shevel. Don't use too much salt because if it warms up then the salt will make pools of water that will freeze with the salt on the bottom and ice on top when it gets cold again. Save the salt for ice patches and to help you get unstuck if your tires slip on the ice. We like to use sand or dirt instead of salt it's seems to work better and is also much better for the environment. It can be challenging but I love the world when it covered in fresh snow and I am out working in the fresh cold air. Good luck, enjoy the winter

    What a cute cat! Congrats! My little trick for cars stuck in the snow is using roofing tiles under each wheel. When I first learned to drive, I managed to get the family station wagon stuck in a snow drift in the middle of the driveway. After shovelling out a bit, the wheels just spun. I found these extra roofing tiles in the garage and tried putting them under each wheel. This worked! I now keep some roofing tiles in my winter emergency kit for the car. Thankfully winter tires have improved a lot since then and I don't drive a station wagon anymore. LOL. The other stuff in my kit is an empty tin can and a handful of tea lights and matches. If you ever get stuck and it's cold out, this will keep you warm in the car without having the car on. Re : salt - I agree with another comment that says salt is probably not what you need. That's fine for pavement. I would say have some sand handy to create grip.

Amazingly Volvo is made in Sweden, right? You'd thing they would make them all wheel drive. You have such a wonderful quality of life there, just the essentials. You house keeps on giving you what you need--it's beautiful. Northern Lights? I grew up in Colorado and still turn to wool to stay warm. Wool sweater (jumper) keeps me toasty warm in winter skiing.

    Such a cute cat!! If you haven’t had a cat before, this is some useful information: chocolate (cacao) and grapes/raisins (including wine) are very dangerous for a cat to eat. Not many people know this but cats are lactose intolerant and should not eat any dairy. If possible only give “human food” if you absolutely sure that it’s safe for a cat to eat. Also don’t leave any small objects that she might swallow, like a hair tie etc. If she won’t be able to go outside when you move back to the uk you should not let her be outside now. There is a big risk she will become depressed if she can’t go outside when she is used to it. If she isn’t eating food like crazy, I would recommend always having dry food out so she doesn’t become obsessed with it, but instead knows that she can eat when she is hungry. I think you will do greats as cat parents!! (I have two rag dolls myself and they are just the best)

      If they’re a Scandinavian mixed cat, they’re naturally craving cream rather than milk and can digest it just fine. My half-Norwegian Forest Cat has it every day.
      Essential oils can also be poisonous to cats so beware of diffusing or getting any of it on them at all. Someone in my apartment building poured a Christmas blend essential oil all over my cat-it was a second occurrence so animal control had to get involved for attempted poisoning, and even though we washed him with Dawn 4x, he still has periodic seizures a month later and can’t go out (in case he has one while he’s up a tree).
      Cinnamon and nutmeg are poisonous to cats, as well as eucalyptus. Ask your vet or check a veterinary channel/blog to find out the others, @Naomi and Jack.

    Congrats on the kitten! The more I see you two in Sweden, the more I wonder why you need to go back to London. Your life is wonderful and full, but sure that you'll take it all in consideration when the time comes. As far as the salt - my recommendation would be to mix it with sand as the salt is for the ice and the sand is for the soggy spots. Also, as much as I hate to say this, since you don't have an all wheel or 4 wheel drive, you may have to get chains for your car. Thank you for inviting me into your life...I really enjoy seeing you two grow and love your Sweden life!

    Great video, two things that might help you in winter.
    1. Use sand instead of salt, much better in every way.
    2. Buy a Volvo XC70 instead, they are higher but the biggest advantage is the AWD system which makes a MASSIVE difference in snow like on your driveway. It is also better to have a "Swedish" Volvo so you have the steering wheel on the left side.
