Yip. The SM57 and SM58 are practically the same mic. The difference in sound is *solely* attributed to the difference in the design of the meshed grille (not a pop filter though it does help with plosives) on the 58. The 58 is a little less "open* in its high and mid frequencies because of that grille.
The SM57 was originally designed to be an instrument microphone, where plosives aren't a concern and a smaller grille is preferred. But they're great for vocals, too. Without any EQ-ing, the 57 is slightly harsh for vocals. There's a small attachment called the Shure A2WS Locking Microphone Windscreen that I can tell you from experience works really well out the gate if you want the SM57 to sound closer to the SM58 while helping to control breath noises and plosives (some say that with the A2WS on the 57, it actually sounds better than the SM58). It cuts the harshness of the 57 and leaves you with a smoother sound to work with, pre-EQ.
The SM58 has been the most popular mic for live performance for decades. It's funny to think that it didn't sell well at first and was almost discontinued.

Ya I was surprised to hear any difference at all frankly. But there was a noticeable difference!

Yes, thanks. 57' is a great tool around to the studio, for kick/snare drums too.

58 personally pleases my ears. More power. The 57 hits my ears the 58 hit me in my guts.

Ya I am surprised I could hear any differences between these two. They are very the same on the inside. The shapes make them ideal for different things. But I could hear subtle differences too!

@EmilyMcVicker Yeah. Not taking anything away from the 57, your voice was very clean and clear. Your voice on the 58 was clean and clear too, but it felt a little more zesty. I felt weight and attitude. It was a little more badass. I actually believed it was my birthday, lol.

Same mice internally but the windscreen adds some control I would say. But you can get great results with either one. It’s preference at this point.

That was my understanding, but I was surprised to hear a slight difference between them in this AB test. Both are common styles of mics though.

Anthony Keidis I heard used the SM57 for his vocals in the early days.

I much prefer the 57s sound the 58 reminds me of those karaoke nights at the bar and small town country musicians

Can you do a vid that also compares the 57 with an foam pop filter stuck over it?

    • @EmilyMcVicker
      @EmilyMcVicker  Před 4 měsíci

Do people do that with 57s? I don’t think I’ve seen them used that way

@@EmilyMcVicker I've seen it recommend for those who can only buy one mic. Apparently the white house does that for president speeches since forever.

@@EmilyMcVickerI have been just because I don’t yet have an SM58. Shure sells a foam cover for it!

    The 58 is better

Well it’s hard to say “better” definitively. They can be better suited for different uses. When you do a lot of gigging or recording, it’s nice to have options.

Nope, 57 sound much better and melodic on this lady's voice. But you need to know how to avoid explosives.

It can be very subjective! The two are mechanically very similar tho 🤗

There are preamps in my interface. It’s an awesome interface and I needed one with many inputs and outputs: www.amazon.com/dp/B018W7BW36/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_Z7V99BZYV2V3Q5963AKR?linkCode=ml2&tag=emcvstore-20
