  • On this episode of Crazy Will Tech Show, I show you how to paint 3d prints, the basics. Ok ok I know its not technically tech, but if you have a 3d printer an do some cool prints you want to add some color. I have spent a lot of time in the last 3 months researching and painting 3d printed objects. A lot of trial and error. Learning what to do and what not to do. There’s lots of videos on CZcams on this subject but none of them show you where to start and they don't have 3d print painting tutorials. So with the whole COVID-19 thing going on I had the time to make one for the newbies like myself out there. I hope to help others that want to get started painting 3d printed objects. So let’s get painting!

    Really cool video. I also find a great detail video to help pop detail is to dry-brush your highlights. Essentially the opposite of a wash, but instead of soaking your model with a watered down brush, you pat the brush until almost dry and then lightly pass over the model. where a wash seeps into the crevices, dry-brushing only kisses the peaks. combining the two really makes details pop.

      @@CrazyWillTechShow I actually picked up on dry-brushing pretty quickly when I did more painting. Getting back into models and painting again after a few years. If memory serves, the Stan Winston School had some really great courses that would cover it, which lead to some real "ah ha" moments. Can't remember which ones exactly, but they are almost all a joy to watch back when I had a subscription.
      I think the big thing is getting used to how much to pat the brush dry, and then just getting the feel for letting the tips of said brush gently glide over the surface. I would say start with a super dry brush, where you almost think there isn't much paint on it at all, and then barely touching the model. It's a real "less is more" technique.

    Two tips i can give about the finish; when you do a wash, its meant for accenting shadows and crevices, so go back over with your base colors again and hit the entire model (not just highlights). then you can go back with a lighter base color and highlight like he did. lastly, get some quality clear coat. rustoleum is AWESOME for priming but lacks with everything else. You can see the "Matte" clear coat ended up glossy. Not even satin. GLOSSY. two things can cause this, too thick and clear coast that isn't worth its weight. I recommend Tamiya TS-80 Flat clear; it is a small can but goes very far and you only need 1 coat for stuff like this that sits on shelves. Its a varnish and is meant to keep your colors safe. if youre using it for functional stuff or things touched often or in the sun, 2-3 coats wont hurt. and when you "mist" like this gentleman, actually MIST. don't mist, then mist, then spray, then mist, then spray. Coat goes on too thick. lol

      I like to dry fit them at first. Make sure everything fits correctly. Tape off the edges that are going to be glued. Put them on sticks or paint caps like I did in the video, And paint them individually. If the parts are easy to get to to paint or there one or color i’ll do them together. May have misunderstood you early in your video. I thought you said you used thinned/transparent acrylic paints over the Testors to accomplish some shading on Superman's face. For the record, enamels and other oil/solvent based paints, such as the Testors, can be applied over acrylics but acrylics should not be applied on enamels. It will flake off over time.

    Check out some model railroad or miniature wargaming painters, they'll teach what paints to use and how to wash and highlight a model. For model 3D printing: A+++ Quick tip: better brushes and thin your paints will help immensely. There are much better washes than what you used. They will make your job way easier. For reference I've won best painted at a few events and I have painted 25,000+ points of Tyranids. I'm here for the 3D printing. Great stuff, not a criticism, just trying to help.

    • @CrazyWillTechShow
      @CrazyWillTechShow  Před 3 lety

      I don’t see it as criticism at all. I really appreciate given your experience. I’m new at this and it bin a lot of trial and Era. Some techniques I like some I don’t really care for. I’m always trying to improve. I have tried war paint wash that I over paid for I really didn’t see a difference. I have changed my technique quite a bit. I now use White primer because the color show up better and less coats of paint will show. I Clear-coat then do a wash then Clear-coat. What’s your opinion on that? thanks for watching I really appreciate the feedback.

    Commenting before I watch the video , hoping to use this on a figure that I ordered , it’s fine , but it has some gaps , some chipping. I don’t own a 3D printer and it’s my first time ever dealing with something like this so I’ll edit this with some questions hoping to be answered or some tips , basically it’s a among us figure with a detachable body , I’m hoping to paint it , and do the things we’re you coat it with a clear layer and it protects the stuff , but before all of that I’m hoping I can use a nail filer to sand it down?? I have no idea what I’m doing and I’m kinda scared to mess with it cause i don’t know what I’m doing.
    Edit one: 2:20
    Ok question , should I use a primer for my figure? It uses colored filament and I’m planning to paint shading and paint the visor as it’s blank. Also there’s the most gaps where the visor and the body connect but it’s secure for the most part , the ears are so rough and shedding I’m thinking of just sanding the texture completely cause it’s irritating
    Another question , is painting by hand with just any paint good? I don’t mean like dollar store , but I mean does the brand matter , is there a brush I should use?
    What kind of stuff should I be using to keep the paint from scraping off , kinda how I mentioned in the first question, I think it’s called varnish but I mean either the stuff you brush on or spray paint whatever , I don’t own any so either way I’d have to buy some so
