  • We take a little tour of this fabulous system in Montreal. We follow the Bombardier/Alstom MPM-10 “Azur’s” and the veteran Bombardier MR-73’s along the Orange/Green/Blue Lines. We observe and listen to the sleek machines still earning their keep for Montrealers. For a modern system, the traction motor sounds are noteworthy. The whine of the Azur’s and the musical sound of the MR-73’s is intoxicating!! This sleek, chic, and very clean system is a model for a North American transit system. Once again, my French accent made famous in Oyster Bay will be attempted. My tongue still hurts from the slurs. 😂😂😂

I took the oldest mr-63 Vicker cars to school ( even by '84 they were tired, smelly & very clunky ) in the early 80s. In 2020 when I bought my friends 70 chevy nova i decided to take the metro as a low-cost high-nostalgia thing. From Angrignon to Anjou the Azur cars were amazing esp how the cars are completely see-through inside and you can watch them snake up & down through the tunnels like riding the inside of a big blue dragon. The 3-tone chime brings a smile to a old rider's face. Thanks for the memories.

the years' worth of delay at opening the Blue Line 5 in its current entirety was due to "engineering difficulties", yet my lover and I had encountered the hot rockface up to within three foot to whereat the concrete tunnel and trackbed linings had been poured .. mystifyingly, it had become tropically humid along those snaky curves from the Vincent d'Indy stop (now Édouard-Montpetit) to the Université-de-Montréal station on our trespass of a trek from Fabre station, and I couldn't splay my palm across the rockface for more than 2 seconds' time either 👀 meanwhile, the overnight low that February 1983 night had dropped to -27°C

I enjoyed this video tour of the Montreal Metro that I wish to see in real life. Your videography is great because you recorded the motion picture at different subway stations. I would tell some people that these stations are subway stations because they are located at "subway" level. You and I know that the New York City rapid transit lines are nicknamed "Subway." By the way, I am a railfan and a subway buff.

I traveled regularly to Montreal from 1982 to 2010, so I've never seen the Azur trains. Their sloping noses remind me of the NYCTA R-40s, except that they're only sloped at the ends of the trains. I fondly remember the tones on the MR-73s; maybe I'd better hurry back there before they disappear completely!

My brother and I were there in 1989 during a junior year school trip (a rite of passage at our school); while many of my classmates took cabs, I stuck with the Metro most of the time. In fact, near the hotel we were staying, the Lucien L'Allier metro station was down the street. We took it to Olympic Park for an Expos game and to Ile Saint Helene (now called Jean-Drapeau) to take in the Man and His World/Expo 67 exhibit.
You probably noticed there was a distinctive smell on the subways. As there are a lot of sharp grades on the Metro, the trains run on rubber tires (they do have steel wheels in case the rubber tires fail), and they have wooden brakes treated with peanut oil.

    • @3985uprr

Crazy to think that the ilder cars are now 50 years old and that system aa whole is a middle aged system that still looks extremely modern! Thr one thing that I love about thr system is that quite a few of the major stations have underground malls complete with low cost restaurants
I dont know if they're there but two of my favorite places to eat were the 99c cent pizza spot and the restaurant that served a three course breakfast for $6.00! They were both found inside the station connected to the intercity bus terminal!

The first Azur was Azur set 16! If you want to find the set number, look at the numbers on the right side of the dot. The first 2 digits are your set number and the third digit is the car number. It’s as simple as that!

I used to stay on the south shore and take the train from Longueuil to what is now Jean-Drapeau to attend the Canadian Grand Prix. After the racing, I'd take the train to Berri, change to a Green Line train and get off at Guy-Concordia. I'd walk to Rue Crescent to enjoy the usual street festival. BTW, did you see any ad signs for Cuba Tourism? You'll never see those in NYC!

Take the LIRR to Atlantic Terminal and transfer to the BMT to Whitehall Street! Hop on the Staten Island Ferry then take the Staten Island Ferry to the S89 over to the HBLR! Go to Hoboken an catch the PATH back to 33/6th and then back to the LIRR! The footage would be amazing!

The blue line uses the older stock because the Azur trains can't be broken down into shorter elements. You have shorter trains and longer headways on the blue line because of lower ridership. The blue line project ran out of money in the late '80s and the east leg was cut short at Saint-Michel, and west leg was never started, as a result the centre section is overbuilt for the demand. There is money allocated now to finish the east leg out to Anjou, but nothing in the plans for the west leg.

Everything is in (Canadian) French in Montreal - except when they want your money! Then, miraculously, they all speak excellent English! On the tech side, those new(er) trains putting out 5600HP (on start from a station stop) are pulling 5600 amps at 750V DC - that is a lot of amps! Those railcars make up trains. They probably have drawbars between their trucks just like married pairs. They are not buses because they run on steel rails, as well as thick rubber tires. Buses are not connected with other buses. Trolley cars are connected with others like trains either in pairs or with triple cars. I am surprised those trains run faster than the MR-63 rolling stock did during the 1960s decade.

    • @fuzzwork

@@captainkeyboard1007 the new stock (MPM -10) is set up as permanently coupled 9 car units (unpowered cabcar-7x power cars-unpowered cabcar) whereas the older stock (MR-63) is 3 car units (power-trailer-power) that can be run in multiple. Speed is computer limited on all lines to 72kph (45mph) but the new stock accelerates a lot faster than the old, especially on the hill up to Vendôme. The old MR-63 stock had a hard time with that grade.

    • @captainkeyboard1007

@@fuzzwork Speed 45 miles per hour is better than the old 35 miles per hour. That reminds me of the fairly new rolling stock, such as the R142, R142A, R143, R160, R179, and now the R211 modern railcars on the New York City rapid transit system, which is called "Subway."
