  • There's no direct cause-and-effect between specific foods and depression or anxiety, but your overall diet could be shaping your mood more than you realize. Registered Dietitian Whitney English explains which diets have been linked to these conditions.
A dietary pattern much like a Mediterranean diet has been linked to a lower risk of depression. Try upping your intake of these healthy foods:
    - Fruits and vegetables
    - Fish
    - Whole grains
    - Legumes
    - Olive oil
A dietary pattern that includes a high amount of these foods has been linked to a higher risk of depression:
    - Refined grains
    - Red meat
    - Fried foods
    - Sweets
Whitney explains how the gut microbiome may be driving associations between diet and depression. Microbes break down the food we eat and produce molecules with psychobiotic effects. And since the food we eat shapes the types of bacteria we have in our gut, different foods and nutrients have different effects. For example, fiber feeds "good" bacteria, which in turn helps us maintain a good mood.
