Mike Skinner's recordings as the Streets marked the first attempt to add a degree of social commentary to Britain's party-hearty garage/2-step (and later grime) movement. Skinner was initially an outsider in the garage scene. Although his initial recordings appeared on Locked On, the premiere source for speed garage and 2-step from 1998 to the end of the millennium, he listened first to hip-hop, then house and jungle.
The Streets biggest hits include “Blinded By The Lights”, “Dry Your Eyes”, “Don’t Mug Yourself”, “Fit But You Know It”, “Let’s Push Things Forward” and “Has It Come To This”. The iconic Streets catalogue also includes the albums “Original Pirate Material”, “A Grand Don’t Come For Free”, “The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living”, “Everything Is Borrowed” and “Computers and Blues”.

Lyrics:
That's it, turn the page on the day, walk away
'Cause there's sense in what I say
I'm forty-fifth generation Roman
But I don't know 'em or care when I'm spitting
So return to your sitting position and listen
It's fitting, I'm miles ahead and they chase me
Show your face on TV then we'll see, you can't do half
My crew laughs at your rhubarb-and-custard verses
You rain down curses, but I'm waving your hearses driving by
Streets riding high with the beats in the sky
All stare, eyes glazed, garage burnt down
The fire raged for forty days and in forty ways
But through the blaze, they see it fade
The sea of black, the beaming heat on their faces
Then a figure emerges from the wastage
Eyes transfixed with a piercing gaze
One hand clutching his sword raised to the sky
They wonder how, they wonder why
The sky turns white, it all becomes clear
They felt lifted from their fears
They shed tears in the light after six dark years
Young bold soldiers, the fire burns, cracks and smoulders
Five years older and wiser
The fires are burning, on fire, never tire
Slay warriors in the forests and on higher, we sing
Hear the strings rising, the war's over, the bells ring
Memories fading, soldiers slaying, looks like geezers raving
The hazy fog over the Bullring, the lazy ways the birds sing
A new baby's born everyday, few men may be scorned today
But look at things the other way
'Cause it may well be your final day
And then the crowds roar, they slay, they all say
I produced this using only my bare wit
Give me a jungle, a garage beat, and admit defeat
Use war and past injuries as my metaphor and simile
Get all applications in to me before the deadline
Cause it's a fine line between strifeful crimes and a life of crime
But you will reach the day
And it's all mine, you can take it or leave it
I shake and reveal stage tricks like Jimi Hendrix
In the afterlife, gladiators meet their maker
Float through the wheat fields and lakes of blue water
To the next life from the fortress
Away from the knives and slaughter to their wives and daughters
Once more before the Lord judges over all of us
It's in this place you'll see me
Brace yourself, 'cause this goes deep
I'll show you the secrets, the sky and the birds
Actions speak louder than words
Stand by me, my apprentice
Be brave, clench fists
Tell you a story .... pops went into hospital with serious health issues a few months back . I knew what I had to do and that was to stay in hospital with him each night and try and bring him back . 5 nights in a hospital , in a ward full of very sick people . Each morning driving back exhausted listening to this . Kept me going during a very intense period , that's the power of music . Hats of Streets and respect. Dads on the mend . Peace out x
Respect , strength and blessings to you and the family 💯🙏🏼 .
That's great! Hats off to you and your pops!
Namaste! Hope pops gets better.
Hope you and your family are doing well.
bless you petal similar experience but I left my dad coz it was miles away and I regret this massively as he passed two days after big love to the ones we've lost peace and love xxxxx
A 17 year old composed this in his bedroom, never forget this. Genius.
Damn, Mike was 17 when he made this?! Nah..
@@0116batmansdad21 when this album was released I’m sure
❤❤❤
💯 it blows my mind
I don't think he was 17 but he was mad young
One of the greatest intro's to a epic album
Amen
The most underrated album of the "noughties" still as fresh n relevant as when it was released, anyone in there late 30s n over can remember n relate to the music n lyrics !!! When ' PILLS ' really where ' PILLS ' GREAT TIMES
Amen
On the mushrooms just rapid peace and bliss from ireland
One of the greatest intros to one of the greatest albums.
This track was always my favourite on the album.
I remember listening to it flying low over the Helmand province Afghanistan, in a chinook helicopter, before deploying to Nad E Ali, a previously un explored taliban stronghold.
I’m not glorifying conflict in any way. I’m not entirely proud of every decision I made in life, but the song and the situation will always be one of those ‘life story’ moments that I’ll take to the grave, and have only shared here anonymously.
Music can be so powerful
I tried to imagine that - what a context, dude!
ITS COMING HOME!! 🏴
Is it iye get it right up ye🤣🇪🇸
@iainkydd916 yeah we are shite but we make decent music atleast 😂
This still gives me chills, what a track!
Cus the original from the olmforum?
Just got back from iow festival, the streets then the prodigy will never be topped.
Props to Mike skinner, great live performer best night of my life
Saw this on a whiskey advert and I’d forgotten how good it was. Ended up finding the CD and listening to the whole album
'Hear the strings rising' gets me every time
is it because you can also hear the strings rising (which they arent really in any meaningful sense, but whatever, you dont know that, move through it)
That's it, turn the page on the day, walk away

This song makes me emotional. Proud to be English. Mike Skinner is a fucking genius. What an album. Inspiring artist and a wordsmith.
Best opening track ever. The lyrics, the beat, the way it builds with those strings coming in; it's perfection.
When he says "hear the strings rising" at 1:46 absolute chills. And omg, "Be brave, clench fists" I'm emotional.
There has never been a 1st album track 1 that introduced an artist to the world quite like this tune! Still remember putting the CD in at age 11 and having my mind blown. I had never heard anything like this before, not really since.
This is by far my favorite song by the Streets, I love it!!
Happy 17th birthday to this masterpiece of an album. Been with me through thick and thin. Eternal.
Has it been 17 years doesn't seem that long this piece of work will I think always be quality
I will NEVER forget the first time I heard this album… just happened to walk into a small little thrift shop in Toronto’s Kensington Market right before this track kicked in (sometimes life puts you in the right place at the right time, as if it was meant to be)… I’ll never forget the immediate reaction both me and my friend had the exact same moment when the strings came in at 0:23 … we were losing our minds, hearing Has It Come to This immediately after was enough to make us Streets fans for life.
Legendary start to a legendary album.
This is one of a few songs that brings a lump to the throat. Truly breathtaking stuff.
Come on England!!!!!
The end of this tune >>>”has it come to this whooooaa” great track!
You just keep coming back to this album. You know you do.
This will never get old!!!!! What a anthem to all free!!!!!!!
such an incredible opening to an album. it feels like the beginning of a movement. mike skinner the 🐐
Loved this song in the film Scrapper. Just awesome
Five years older and wiser
The fires are burning, on fire, never tire
Slay warriors in the forests and on higher, we sing
Hear the strings rising, the war's over, the bells ring
Memories fading, soldiers slaying, looks like geezers raving
God dam genius

Actually 17 years old! Timeless album though
Today is the 17th birthday. Big up.

This whole album is 🔥 Takes me back to when I was doing my GCSE’s at school - I used to listen to it on The Streets website when I had access to a computer 😂 this was before CZcams was ever heard of.
I remember first hearing ‘Has It Come To This’ for the first time in the radio in my dads car, thinking ‘this is the shiz’ it was revolutionary, then all the radio kept playing it, even the papers were writing up mad reviews about it, crazy, represents my generation this album
One of the greatest intros to any album ever, hauntingly brilliant
if this doesn't get you pumped up nothing will
classic...the few who understand this and feel this, are rare...for good reason...
Anyone else here after watching the new British indie film Scrapper? Absolutely lovely, sweet and charming little film! Go see it if you’re able to, you won’t regret it! And loved the part they used this classic tune in!
ahead of his time, yet his music takes me back
I first heard this album when it came out like 2003 or something - in my then-boyfriend's friend's car on the way to some crappy movie & I went out & bought this cd at Best Buy the next day. This shit absolutely slapped back in the day & I still love it now lol 💯
This is high quality poetry from a working class lad.it got mocked when it first came out as people didn’t get it.utter masterpiece and the first song that is played when you see them live.long live the streets!! Birmingham made but south London is yours mick
Ryan Smith that last bit, couldn’t have said it any better! The Gheezers a legend
It didn’t get mocked
No one writes like this. It didn’t get mocked anywhere mate. Unless you’re londoncentric tryna join in cussing other bits of the island so they don’t cuss you. What you joining with man 😂 this is as epic now as it ever was geez 💕
Poetry succeeds when all else fails.
Gives me serious nostalgia... Memories of my childhood and adolescence. Memories of siblings and time long past.
This is a song I will always remember brings my past back.
It's not very often that you love every track on an album
Black sunday and license to I'll where fuckin crazy
Yep. Strange how on the following album i only loved *one* track! Yet only 2 years earlier I connected deeply with all 14 tracks on OPM.
Memories fading, soldiers slaying looks like geezers raving.
Love that line
Theres a few albums that come along now and then that change the musical landscape and sound fresh and up to date as they did on the day of release, this is one of them albums.
20 years man........Still as good ♥
20 years. Timeless!
Man, that beat. When I was a kid and I heard Mike say "stay with me my apprentice, be brave, clench fists" I was ready to ride out and crush the enemy... which was puberty. ha.
I feel that deep man
Oi Mr Beats that was funny AND edumacated I feel better now!
The streets. Just know you mean a lot to a lot of people. This album are a time line to people's lives. Nuff love my G's
just as breathtaking as it was when "original pirate material" was brand new!
never gave up for a streets revival!
Be brave clinch fists!
ps: it feels soo wrong without the jump to "has it come to this" afterwards!
Have you checked out "the darker the shadow the brighter the light" work?
@ross twemlow Clipper's are the best lighters ^^
New album!! Pre order for signed vinyl!!
this is just outstanding, always was one of my fav songs of all time
To sum up the streets "pure poetry" absolutely skilled in this type of music. Thank you for so many great tunes!.
this was the first album i ever bought along with a grand dont come for free. i was around 10 or something. im 30 now and have rinsed this album at different stages of my life. one of my formative albums that defined my musical taste at age 18 to 20. this is the only album from my formative years that i relate to more as i grow older. it perfectly encapsulate lower class british street culture before it became obsessed with road man culture and drill stuff.
Used to listen to this in my bedroom playing grand theft snorting lines , dodging the parents
The king.the great mike skinner.one of the best albums ever made.we sing
This group, this album it definitely made the uk realise it could be different and it was! Love the streets always will pure genius.
Really?! Not UB40 or Bowie or The prodigy or... I could go on.
Love The Streets, by the way. Another great British band.

This is timeless. I played this at my dad's funeral
Truly sorry for your loss. A fine choice for a such a sorrowful occasion
A modern masterpiece of mixing. Go on defy it. Good luck with that....just lovely...
I still don’t know whether to listen to the high quality videos by the official page or the videos that have been on CZcams for years
Doesn't matter as long as you enjoy the music 👍
Action speaks louder than words...
Just utter genius
Mike skinner unmatched 👊
This is the song I listen to for motivation every morning, what a track
A modern masterpiece ❤
15ish years on and it's still a thunderous track and a mighty start to a record.
The Streets bossed this at Tramlines this weekend - amazing atmosphere

Just listened to the new remix on R1. It's alright and I hope it introduces a few kids to the original album but I had to switch straight back to this! 😂
