  • What's it like being a teacher inside an adult prison and working with kids who are sentenced as adults? When our cameras met prison teacher Connie Lucas she was in the midst of class time with all the teens locked up inside a maximum-security adult prison. During our interview, Connie discussed her job teaching kids as young as 13 who wound up being sentenced to adult prison. Connie describes the differences she's experienced having previously worked as a public school teacher versus her experience teaching incarcerated kids. She explains that entering a prison every day to go to work is a challenge in itself, and that many times, the kids inside don't think they want to learn. However, motivating the kids to understand the importance of education and the benefits it will provide is what makes the job rewarding for Connie. As she talked to our cameras from inside the cell house where the youth were studying at tables behind her, she explains what it's like to work with 53 boys ranging in age from 13-18. By law, kids under the age of 18 who are sentenced as adults must be sight and sound separated from the adult population. Therefore, all youth at the prison were confined to this one Youth cellblock. The Youth Unit was where kids attend school, ate all meals and recreated. Connie discussed all aspects of teaching this specific population of kids, and the rewards and challenges involved.

My Nephew, Scott, is a prison instructor. Easy Peasey. Nobody else wants his job, so he can say and do things without a lot of interference from higher ups. ;-)
