  • It's risky and safer all at the same time. Lane Splitting that is. I've done over 80,000 miles of it and seen a lot and learned a lot along the way, so I thought I'd share some wisdom.

So back in the day when I looked into lane splitting here in Cali there wasn't a speed limit per say but it was up to the discretion of the officer whether you were doing it safely (around 15 over traffic). It also used to be that if you did get hit by the whose lane you're sharing it would be the rider's fault. Maybe the laws have been tweaked since I used to ask the motorcycle cops on set but that's what they said. And technically they would call it lane "sharing." Back in the day.

Thanks bro. I am learning and this will help. The contrast between PA laws that target motorcyclist and CA laws that protect us could not be more contrasting.

Your what if rule was taught to me in my motorcycle safety years ago. They call it SIPD which stands for Scan Identify Predict Decide and it has served me well for 30 years of riding to where (knock on wood) I never put a bike down and never had an accident. Some close calls with drivers not paying attention (on their cell phones) but singling them out ahead of time has saved me. Note I do this even when driving my cars.... anyway, little less yappin about some crashes would be better but overall great advice

Definitely the “what if” rule has saved my ass as wel, more than once. Another is to rid your bike of its factory horn & buy one that everyone can actually hear! The Denali SoundBomb Mini works best, easy to install & is LOUD (small & incognito too).

More cars in this video than what I would see in a month of travelling here in the outback!

I see you also ride with the brights on. I do the same on highways

You should have your lights on at all times, it makes you more noticeable

How do you have so many miles under your belt, but are so clueless on the laws?

You cannot do it at anytime. Splitting guidelines states when traffic is below 40mph and you cannot exceed 10mph over the flow of traffic. Looks like an illegal straight pipe too.. lol Also you are splitting at higher traffic speed, which is against the guidelines to split.

Those are guidelines not actual law. It’s not illegal to split over 40 mph

You are very incorrect in your statement that you can lane split at ANY speed or time, and that there is hardly any rules. California basic speed law, CVC 22350, states "No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property." As a 30 year-plus motor sergeant and master motor instructor in California, you might want to rethink what you're talking about.

I think we all understand that there are limitations on how fast you can go while lane splitting or riding in general before you get stopped for reckless driving. My point was more in regards to Splitting VS Filtering, where Splitting is not as limited to "traffic not moving" and posted speed limits under 40 mpg (or is it 45?). You are quoting a basic speed law that applies to all drivers/riders at all times. It's not Lane Splitting specific. And I by no means am instigating that riders do any speed they want while splitting. The point of this video is to get riders to slow down and ride smarter.
