Give Indians a break guys. We usually already are multilingual. Most know minimum 2-3 languages easily. If we don't want to add another one, don't judge us.
Plus, I am sure they already know basic Japanese but not enough to hold a conversation with a Japanese speaker and consequently make friends.

Many foreigners who lived in Japan for 10 years still can't speak the local language but I don't see comments bashing them.
We Indians don't ask foreigners living here to speak in Hindi, Telugu,Tamil,Sindhi,Punjabi, etc but will thrash our fellow Indians living abroad just for not being able to speak the country's language they are living in.Y'all need to calm down. Indians already speak more than 2-3 languages and now you are asking us to learn another one just bcs they are living in a foreign country. You need to remind yourself that they are not there for a lifetime. Once they get a new job offer or if they just wish to leave that particular country that language won't be of much use. No matter it's Japanese, Spanish, etc.
Also they already told you that even the Japanese people speak in English so what's your deal with it. Just shut tf up!!!!

I can speak Japanese only because Japanese people can't speak English and I have never been to Japan lol (also, they didn't make fun of my Japanese unlike my Marathi friends who always make fun of my Marathi accent ( TДT))
My point is, living in a place with a different language for years doesn't mean you WILL know the language even if you actively try to learn/use it (I studied Marathi for 7 years at school lol)
If you don't have the interest/motivation/incentive/etc even if you live in a foreign land for decades you might still not be able to speak the language beyond basic level.
But wanting people to speak in English just because you can't speak their language in their own country is bizarre.

@Rajendra Bawa Bold of you to assume I do not try to speak the local language, that I expect Maharastrians to speak Hindi and that north Indians cannot speak Marathi.
If you read my comment properly I clearly mentioned two cities - Mumbai and Pune. If you live in these cities you'd know one doesn't have any problem even if they don't speak Marathi. (Though Punekars tend to speak Marathi more than Mumbaikars. So one should at least understand Marathi.)
I have studied in Maharastra state board. I had to pass my Marathi exam to pass 10th grade. I scored more than my Marathi friends. I did put in the work. I just never got to the level where I can confidently speak in Marathi like how I can speak in Hindi or English, or even Japanese. I even stated the reasons - 1. Never faced a situation where if I didn't speak Marathi I won't get my work done
      2. My friends never encouraged me to speak in Marathi, rather made fun of my accent which really discouraged me from speaking it.
I have north Indian friends who are fluent in Marathi. I have met auto drivers, vegetable sellers from North who speak Marathi. If you think Hindi is the only language spoken in North India then you're mistaken. There are many regional languages in North India as well and people there can speak more than 2 languages. In fact Hindi might not even be the 1st language of the north Indians whom you're so sick of.
Marathi is an Indo-European language. If natives of Dravidian language can speak it so can native Hindi speakers. I can read, write and understand Marathi. I just don't speak it due to lack of need and confidence. Does that mean I am being disrespectful to the language? Did I ever say I expect everyone in Maharastra to speak Hindi? I even clearly mentioned and acknowledged my shortcomings. Why should I be told what I should try to do or what I should and shouldn't expect? If your comment was directed towards me, I am offended. If it wasn't, your choice of words isn't very polite and should have been a separate comment altogether.

@@YinYanUzumaki @@YinYanUzumaki hi , didi/ behan.i am going to be non PC, so i am asking for forgiveness beforehand.
Firstly, it was a catholic school, believe me ,forget they are keralite or tamilian, all Catholics hate cultures languages that are pagan ,so the more they drive their students away from their native roots and native culture the easier it is to indoctrinate them into Christianity. This is an open secret of convent school, both my father and mother studied in a convent. They are Hindus and they both know Christian songs and hymns they had to sing in the chapel for getting evening snacks. My father is agnostic, but he knew how subtle this was.his own teacher were mallu, who tied, being rational and sophisticated to being European temperament and backwardness to indian temperament .
Second, i am a telugu guy , who learnt Hindi ,because it was a secondary language in cbse, by hook or crook.but it was a hassle.i had to go to tution in various north indian homes near me(thanks to hyd being metropolitan). I went from a Marathi, to a marwadi home, to a Nepali home, and then to some one from guwahati (north east). it is why I was way more comfortable with Northerner as compared to my other south Indians. can I ask you , have you experienced how it is to stay in a south Indian household or the some other than your region ,initially the language and different cultures will bother you and then you slowly understand over time and gain comfort overtime. not everyone can have this experience
      Do you like Hindi language?
As Hindi language , i have mixed feelings about it, i like the Hindi language ,but its use/pros is very limited, and then cons outnumber the pros.the biggest pro of Hindi language is its sharing it's Devanagari script with sanskrit. So helpful as i am currently learning sanskrit. But con is nobody respect Hindi, not even the northerners themselves.there is absolute no appreciation for learning Hindi, the south Indian has not enroute to learn dialect and idioms, and it is heavily adulterated with Urdu, to the extent some say are actually the same language with different written scripts, and you are a laughing stock for sounding like a text book (bhai, tu itna Sharif wala Hindi kyu bolta hai), and don't even get me start with the incessant use of MC BC, almost every punctuation is an MC BC, if some one is from Delhi and even this who are not from Delhi pick it up really quickly.
Historically , south Indians had a gripe with Hindi, the tamils hated both hindi and sanskrit and wanted to create their Identity based on Tamil/tamizh language and it's antiquity , the telugu ,malayali, kannadiga, wanted sanskrit to be the national language, as this will aid them to understand their scriptures better and believed in the classical antiquity and prestige of sanskrit, along with their mother tongues. But the central govt , Congress party decided to go with pragmatism and chose Hindi because most people spoke(not read or write) it.
Did you know about the love / hate relationship between Tamil/telugu, Tamil / kannada?
Did you know the first state to form on the basis of the language is Andra pradesh? , Because we bifurcated the Madras state due to Tamil imposition. The Tamil hate Hindi imposition because they were also guilty of imposing their own language and culture ,ideology on other south Indian , and believe me the Tamil love their language ,there can be no better chauvinist than a Tamil chauvinist. The Hindi ones you can find now and then are cute by comparison.we south Indian did not let one language be imposed over the other and kept our distinctive classical status in check.
But why can't you learn Hindi for unity of India? If not, what is the common language of the south I can't learn all four languages(Tamil, telugu, kannada and Malayalam)?
You are correct, Hindi is pragmatic solution for a national language, had it not shot in the leg but also letting english be the other option. Today Hindi and English are the official languages of india.
Idealistically it should have been Sanskrit. Many agreed with sanskrit for nationalism and religious Hinduism reason ,but pragmatism had to come in between ,chose Hindi and guess what today the same pragmatism is a hurdle for Hindi to be a National language. Because pragmatically english is a better language to learn, instant respectabllity, better opportunity, heck the increasingly medium of schooling and job enviornment is english.so hmmm 🤔 🤷. Same pragmatism that gave opportunity for Hindi to be a National language killed it in the end,i am sorry 😔.
The unofficial common language of south India is english ,heck ms namrata, you can look me in the eyes and say, arrey sun be ,chyawanprash rang ke chutiye, main Naa Tamil sikhungi, Naa telugu, nahi kannada aur malyalam sikhungi, if you don't know Hindi and can't be bothered, you better talk to me in English, i can't be bother to learn four different languages. i would totally respect that.you go girl, and rise up for your truth. That is the reality, give this reasoning to south indian and see if he can't refute that.no he can't. It's the truth.

@@ugottabekiddingd1999 no it’s not true . Malayalam is a mix of tamil and Sanskrit . Infact Malayalam is mostly Sanskrit itself . Kannada and Telugu have heavily used Sanskrit vocabulary . Even Tamil has common words wid Sanskrit be it yena ( or Enna) , Dooram , sangam , tavam etc . These are also Sanskrit words . So while tamil might be absent in modern day North Indian languages , Sanskrit is one thing that connects India from tip of Himalayas to Kanyakumari. A few politicians have done their best to eradicate Sanskrit from Tamil Nadu and they have been successful with their hate agenda and missionary conversion Schemes but the rest of India embraces Sanskrit as their deva bhasa and temples to this day use Sanskrit . Even the greatest Tamil Chola kings would use Sanskrit for their inscriptions in temples like Angkor wat because traditionally all languages united with Sanskrit and didn’t have a step motherly attitude to it or any conflict with Sanskrit . This is why Sanskrit influence is seen everywhere and is rightly the unifying language of whole India . It is precisely this reason why Tamil Nadu see separatists tendencies because of the adulteration of Tamil culture by infusing hate against Sanskrit . Tamil kings loved Sanskrit and Sanskrit was part of Tamil culture and the same is seen in their architectures.
In any case , I rest my case with this South Indian states do like to associate with Sanskrit and they love it with the exception of Tamil Nadu that got brainwashed by politicians over the years .
I might have digressed a little bit , but it seems like people love to deny Sanskrit base in South Indian language when it could not be further from truth .

Why do we use English in every field of India? *(Why do we need English)*
      1) India is a *"multilingual"* country & we have a different language family's *(Indo-european, Dravidian, indo-iranian sino-tibetan, Tibeto-burman, Semitic, astro-asiatic Etc..)* & India has no _-national language-_ or any _-monolingual policy-_ the country of India is a *"union system'* and "all languages are respected equally"
      2) Only English is recognized and used as the *"second official language"* in all states of India! (After their state's official language)
      3) English is the only language used in all fields of India *(science, technology, education, medical, business, job field, information, space field, Navy, etc..)*
      4) English is emerging as the future *"lingua franca"* of India and the World
      5) English is *"indispensable"* today and giving more value to "English" after our "State language" is also good for our financial empowerment.
It is better that we accept the reality and equally important to respect all our Indian languages.
