It's so sad that I try to convey this exact message, and most people give me the deer in the headlights stare. I'm a US Army Combat Veteran of both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. I joined the Army right after 9/11, thinking I was going to defend and obtain the necessary revenge. Fast forward, we were lied to and feel it was all for a different agenda. No one can bring back my battle buddies that paid the ultimate sacrifice. Nothing will erase the nightmares and PTSD. I'm glad to see a fellow combat veteran at such a high level, give the truth. God bless you, Robert O'Neil. Godspeed to you and @KARS 215 for your service.

He’s misinformed. The Def Dept was asked to provide force on the Pak side of Tora Bora and Rumsfeld refused that how Bin Laden escaped the Jaw breaker and No. Alliance team. We went to Iraq because of Cheney, Wolfawitz, Pearl and Dave Wormser. They were talking Iraq on 9/12. It was also a way to attempt Iran to fold. Iran was shook when we went into Afghanistan and was copping pleas that the Bush admin didn’t want to hear because they felt Iraq would fall into our sphere of influence in a matter of months.

When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s I thought joining the military was the most honorable action a man could ever do. All my uncles, both my grandfathers and my father were all vets. I knew that I was going to join as soon as I was old enough. I graduated and married my high-school sweetheart. I then went to the recruiter and low and behold it was a close family friend. He talked me out of joining. It was the such a good decision. I thank God that man was there and not someone who didn't care. Our government and military are now a joke. I respect our vets but hate what the government has become and what it does to them. I ended generations of military service for my family and my own sons will not join either because we haven't been involved in a just war in a long time.

Very similar story here. As I neared the end of high school in the late 80's, I was thinking of joining the military or applying to one of the military academies. My dad, who was an Army officer during the Vietnam era, told me "Son, politicians have a knack for killing young Americans". I am so glad that I made different life choices, because things are just not the same as when my dad and uncle served during the Vietnam era, or when my grandfathers and great uncles served during WWII. I still hold the individual solider, sailor, or airman who tries to serve their country in a place of highest honor; but also recognize the reality that our government and military/industrial complex are simply exploiting those patriots for their own selfish ends.

Yes, well, here's the real truth: We get the government we deserve. Paraphrasing the Founders, a republic like ours can only work if there is an educated, engaged and virtuous citizenry. I'm not sure we've had that in 200-years. Perhaps the Union during the the Civil War. When grown men are more concerned with, and know more about, the next NFL Draft than the next election, never mind the philosophical underpinnings of the United States of America, this is what you get.
And your "just war"--all of you too wise to have served and that have convinced you sons of the same--may well be sooner than you think. I'm an ex-Force Recon guy. If what I recently saw on MCRD San Diego, at a young cousin's graduation, is any indication--we're in big trouble. There's this metastasizing monstrosity called the "People's Republic of China." The media was full of propaganda. If you were against the war they told you you weren’t real Americans. Didn’t care about 9/11. It was crazy and I’m Canadian but border means nothing to me I cried and was absolutely devastated about all 4 planes and the amount of deaths. I noticed so many people saying why do they (BinLaden but basically any place or person who was Muslim was thrown in) so I started reading on the history, then the wars and was sick Bush & Cheney got away with it. Damn, even Cheney bought himself a new heart. He was over the age by many years. I’m Canadian and we said no to going to Iraq. All of a sudden we weren’t listed as “friends” anymore when others were listed, lol. I’m glad they’re having such a problem recruiting but hey, they’ll just draft people. I hope you are ok. Mentally and physically. I was in a private hospital for ptsd, live in for 2 months and got to know and hear stories so horrifying and I know I only felt 0.0000000001% of what they re-living. Now that you know, tell it to everybody. You did what they made you think was right. And lied. And lied, and….

The US had no business being in Iraq. I always thought it was about Bush trying to one up his father or about Cheney making money for his former company, Halliburton. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 or weapons of mass destruction. Total BS. How many lives were lost or destroyed and how much money was wasted because we had idiots in charge.
At the time speaking out about the war was considered unpatriotic and would be met with anger by idiot warmongers. I'm sorry for everyone who served there and have physical or psychological wounds. I highly recommend the documentary , "Body of War" about a seriously wounded Iraq war veteran. That being said while I whole heartedly believe that my friends died for absolutely nothing. Full stop. Granted it made me who I am today and certainly by 2012 I had experienced a wide array of things most people in this country only experience through video games and movies. But at the end of the day the 1% got wealthier and men who on their worst day were the types of individuals that only the 1% could dream of being, never came home. No one wins. I can identify with what Rob says about thinking that we’re always the good guys and doing the right thing, if anything 04-12 opened my eyes at a relatively young age to how immense wealth can at times create exponentially more evil individuals with malicious intent than any militant religious group.

My grandfather fought and was wounded in WWII. My uncle fought and was wounded in Korea.
Joined the Navy... 3/64 to 3/68. I was already in when the Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred.
I did a total of 25 months in Vietnam. Three purple hearts. I was there one or two months when I realized we were there for no logically articulable reason. I did not re up even though my three purple hearts would have kept me out of combat in the future.
As corpsman I was outside every night and I got a lot of combat experience... its habituation and the learned ability to think clearly and execute with purpose while in combat. That lesson has served me well throughout life.
Since I was good at it and the reasons for the war I was in were bullshit I decided to put my skills to use elsewhere. Contracted for 12 and made enough for college and law school. Plunder was acceptable back then.
I have five sons and too many grandsons to count... but I have discouraged all of them from military service... not smart to die for somebody else's profit or political gain. But if we ever had to defend the homeland we would all be there.
The last war we actually needed to fight was WWII and maybe Korea. After 9/11 we should have done a series of punitive air strikes against Afghanistan and kept it up until they turned Bin Ladin over. Never should have gone into Iraq... Hussein was a violent tyrant, but as we have learned that's what it takes to keep those folks in check! And... don't we wish we could use Hussein as a proxy against Iran nowadays!

I remember loading a civilian ship at Morehead City heading to Terkidag Turkey for NATO Exercises, that dam Captain of the ship was walking around bragging about how much he was making, like 600k in 1992, while supervising a work party a longshoreman dropped his wrench, as he bent over to pick it up the old Master Guns I worked for says " you see that Simms? That son of a bitch made more than you make in a month just by picking up his wrench" PFC rate was like $680 a month.

Wasn’t Halliburton a oil company that the Bush’s were invested in or owned part of?
And the bin ladens too through the Carlisle company?
      Or am I mistaken?

KBR facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan were staffed by people from Sri Lanka and other poor South Asian countries. they were being exploited while the American civilian contractors were making 6 figure money for being in country for just 4 months doing absolutely jack shit.

@@seansimms8503 The military can work for you as well as long as you aren't in combat or around toxic stuff. I was working a minimum wage job at the the time. I was living in my parents home and had dropped out of college so I joined the army, the idea being I could figure out what I wanted to do, get some money for college and see Germany.
It more or less worked out that way but my sergeant my last year was a narcissist, didn't know what that was at the time, and a recovering alcoholic pain in the a$$ and by the end of that year I was miserable. I thought about reupping but I got out and went back to school and got my degree. So it did work for me but definitely pros and cons. I never figured I would be in a war, which I wasn't and I'm grateful for that. I was in the mid 80's.

As a USMC vet myself served from 95-99 I did my time honorably but I too told my stepson the truth about what goes on with our government and told him not too join any branch of service for this particular reason I’m glad he changed his mind about joining.
