- I play a Magic the Gathering Online Modern league with Dimir Pox, a brew challenge from Patreon subscriber Matthew! Matthew wanted to see channel-favorite Smallpox put to work in Modern with Urza's Saga and the support of Academy Ruins to loop value artifacts. Bosh and ThrabenU drove me so hard to legacy that the my first thought was "why Wrench Mind instead of Hymn to Tourach?".

@@BoshNRoll I was responding to ask why no Tourach while you were adding them. If you have 4 mana you do get to play a hymn to tourach at the same time you cast Tourach.
Also shrieking affliction is effectively another copy of the rack that hits them for 3 if they have 1 card left, but you didn’t have a full play set of the rack anyway so maybe that was already considered.
WOTC GIVE US HYMN YOU COWARDS
Would Hymn be acceptable in Modern? I feel like it's not an auto-no.
@@YourPalJamieEllis I thought the same, but expressive iteration, which is arguably a better card advantage engine in better colors, is modern legal. Plus, moderns painful manabases make it a bit more of a chore to have double black in a multicolored deck.

13:23 I think the line here is to make the construct, get nihil spellbomb, drown the murktide and then exile their graveyard to make the DRC a 1/1 and take unholy heat offline. Unless I'm miscounting something, that should have kept you alive

I feel like there's better ways to build this, without the gameplan being that you hope you're against a goldfish.
having a 1 of Springleaf Drum is so essential for holding up mana with your summon sick construct. Highly suggest fitting 1 drum in for most Urza Saga packages. It has come up way too many times for me to count this past year.

I haven't watched the videos yet so I don't know how kaito does. . but secret tech I used to run in my pox deck back in 2010 that was always baller is mindstorm crown.

Have you seen the new card monster manual? Its like elvish piper/quicksilver amulet but a green artifact. That card I was hoping was modern legal but its not! Its only legacy legal and commander. I was going to brew a sweet emrakul deck for modern. Modern is basically legacy now.

Update #1 on the Cawblade/Painter gameplay dream:
No update. One of my cats was being too much of a goblin to let me sleep. Board state remains the same with the Cawblade/Painter player having all four Squadron Hawks out and having just played out Painter + Grindstone.
Though on thinking back on the initial dream I can say that I remember that the Cawblade/Painter player **did not** have the mana up to activate grindstone after getting both pieces into play and that Painter had been played picking White.
Future updates to follow as dreams happen.
Deck needs some more card draw. Perhaps Dark Confidant

Other Saga ideas:
Bag of Holding?
Lets loot away nonplayables and maybe get Lili/Smallpox cards back. Probably too mana intensive
What about a sideboard Sphere of Annihilation? You can tutor it with Saga to clear saga tokens, or cast it to wipe 1-2 drops. It also answers cheap walkers like Wrenn and Six (when cast, which isnt great as a 1-of)
Black Staff of Waterdeep could be used to animate Racks or Bridge or Pithing Needles? That's probably too cute to be good.

I would go with Go For The Throat over Doom Blade in the side as it deals with Phyrexian Crusader.
I would worry about Inkmoth Nexus, Memnite, and Ornithopter out of Hammer before Crusader out of Infect.

Ah yes, Izzet. Making every format so much fun! It's not like it's the best colour combo in Modern. Wait, what's that? It IS? Well it's not like it's good in Legacy, right? Oh. What about Pioneer? Oh it's good enough to have had EI banned? Well it wasn't good in Standard right?
Facetiousness aside, I'm really sick of seeing Expressive Iteration, Murktide, and DRC in every game I watch. It's getting tiresome that Blue and Red are so pushed it's not even close for any other deck.
Ok 51:48 you were saying “there’s no route to blue mana” but maybe you meant no route to blue mana while making a construct? Like I feel the safe line was float with saga, grab map, tap a factory to crack map for watery grave. Shock that I’m going to 1 (I think the only card that is bad against is searing blaze) and then you are holding up drown. But then I guess you are only attacking for 2 (or 3 if you don’t also hold up push). But you did have 2 drowns so that probably holds for 2 draw steps. Idk maybe it’s kinda close but I feel like it was safer to get the blue mana and deal less damage to hold up counterspells rather than just pray the burn deck doesn’t draw a burn spell. It’s close. The more I think about it, the less I’m sure
