    Benzaldehyde is the smell. It should smell poisononous, because it's a smell associated with cyanide, but because fruit started making it, we humans like the smell now.
    Benzaldehyde is also called 'almond oil'. It smells like artificial cherry flavoring.

    That smell is either the jungle or the millipedes ultimate defense, *Cyanide* you see, some millipede species can produce cyanide that smells kind of like cherries or other fruit, the cyanide can or can’t be harmful to you depending on the species we are dealing with.

    • @shmooters5599
      @shmooters5599 Před dnem

      @@melwinder1I would assume that it’s not necessarily the “sweetness” of the smell that deters them, but what it represents. As other comments have brought up, it has to do with a chemical tht is found in both cyanide as well as some fruits. Humans eat fruits and so with time we’ve learned to associate it as a good rather than a bad smell. Carnivores most likely will smell it and get warning signals similar to us smelling rotten food, as it will be more associated with cyanide which is incredibly dangerous for them.

    The millipedes reminded me of some of the giant millipedes I saw in Kenya. The longest I saw stretched across an entire tire print - easily a foot long. So many of the crawlies get so much bigger in certain environments, they also had giant wasps, but other than the scorpions the giant bugs were shockingly gentle. There was one time I got a giant wasp tangled in my hair, and I was able to untangle it and let it go, without getting stung. I can't imagine doing that with the wasps back here in the US.

    5:30 the millipede can smell either like cherries or almonds depending on the person, due to it secreting a type of cyanide.

    Up in Northeast NY Adirondack Mountains and St.Lawrence valley has a millipede species very similar to that one. I have seen them as big as 6 inches.

    If it was a somewhat common insect around the world, I would not mind having one as a pet. Provided I am confident that I can offer him a confortable, decent existence of course

    Looks like something you'd find crawling around in a Metroid game !

    Jesus, man! That initial lunge almost went bad. When your thumb hit it, my stomach lurched. It looked like you might slipped. I'm glad things went okay.
