GIANT SMASH BROS CHEATING SCANDAL EXPOSED

- It's been uncovered that for numerous Smash Ultimate online events, numerous players shared an account titled the "Phantom Thieves", sending in choice members for various matchups to gain a competitive edge. Funny, sure, but as I dug deeper it seems that this account has potentially prevented thousands of dollars from other competitors.

I think the funniest part about this whole thing is that these guys are claiming to be like the Phantom Thieves when in reality the Phantom Thieves would def attack the group of people who are collaborating in order to tip fights in their favor and win tournaments 💀
Ironic
i remember having a dream where my discord friend was talking about persona fans being arrogant
did i say dream? i meant REVELATION
reminds me of a sidequest that happens IN persona 5.

Let's do it lmao
these fools really were roleplaying persona characters in the smash community… and it pretty much worked
This fool*
All of those people are under one person
@Rylade475 How does “ this fool really were roleplaying persona characters in the smash community… and it pretty much worked” make sense to you- just because they’re under one account doesn’t mean you refer to them as one person lmao.
@@brehella770 Yeah I actually misunderstood the situation, my bad
@@rylade475 did you think they "identified" as one person so we were obligated to address them that way?
@@danm8004 I assume they misunderstood and thought one person used several accounts to get more chances after being knocked out or smth
This is Cheating, no arguments about it. HBox explains it himself. _But I gotta hand it to them; _*_They got style._*
This is so funny and impressive that they only now got caught. We truly have been struck by smooth criminals. 😆

No, that makes it even better. They're phantom THIEVES.
100% agree
its better that the dude had no way of collecting the money tho
I would still dislike it, but at least it wouldn't inflict any real, tangible damage.
@@Masaru_kun That doesn't change anything. Legitimate players were robbed of potential prizes, the damage was done.
That whole part about them selling each other out was quite literally just Joker with Sae in the interrogation room. I know this is serious but the whole time I was just thinking "don't get the bad ending"
Hbox really pulled the sae nijima and said "you're off the hook if you spill who the other phantom thieves are."
I can understand how this probably had humble/friendly beginnings but yeah with actual money on the line it's clearly wrong. Don't know if anyone on the group actually made/pocketed money from it but ironic if someone in the phantom thieves were actually a victim of greed.
Pretty sure on Twitter I remember non having taken any money
I can answer this

Especially with the faithful, P5 music playing in the background😆
Why can't all smash drama be something so light hearted and funny 😂
because the community is ran by transsexuals
People lost out on money, it's funny but it definitely ain't light.
Cause they like minors too much
It's because of you guys (All smash players)
@@akdreamer6497 they would've lost no matter what if all the Phatnom Thieves were in the tournament to begin with. So they would've lost anyway.
I think they should be banned for a temporary period of time but not permanently. They aren’t threats to the smash community and this had friendly intentions. They just need to recognize that a sponsored event isn’t the place for these kinds of games and a temporary ban would achieve that. That said this was funny as hell and put smiles on many faces.
we dont know about the intentions, in the end they stole money and they knew they were gonna do that. Afterwards saying that is was all for fun is easy. im down for temp bans till a certain border has been reached. When you steal money you are definitly crossing that line.
Thieving lying worms is what they are. Idc what their intentions were the road to hell is paved with good intentions 😂

@@battlefieldelite1 Humor is subjective. What's funny in one situation or to one person can oftentimes be cringe in other circumstances or to different people. It works the other way around, too.
They probably had good intentions but didn't think it through. They didn't see how many players they were damaging with their antics. I hope they learn from their mistakes, right the wrongs they did and take more care on their future antics.
its not that deep
@@TWIKIPEDIAFAN34728 When there's real money on the line ($2,000), it kinda is
@@HawkTeevs its not deep because no one is trying to support a living from that type of prize. what you most likely get if you actually won something is pocket money. but its still money and thats the issue. its like seeing a kid trying to scam another kid for that charizard card they own or whatever no one is gonna make a big deal out of it.
@@HawkTeevs i was literally there when the group was created lmao, they just thought itd be funny. you getting all pressed over the competitive integrity of online smash bros ultimate is a joke
It’s crazy to me that it needs to be explained why this is a problem. Sure the Phantom Thieves thing was a joke, and this is a video game tournament so “it ain’t that deep,” but $2,000 is $2,000 that someone was robbed of because someone thought it’d be funny to enter as five players in a trench coat
HBox is gonna post an apology video tomorrow after his heart changes
Shadow Hbox really dealing with the phantom thieves after the calling card... tragic for our heroes
Every day I wake up, there's some new Smash controversy. Can the fanbase just be normal for one second?
This wasn't even that bad at all. This was more like a dumb prank than an actual attempt at winning. They even said that they never accepted any money during the scheme.
I'm sure the people who got eliminated a little earlier than they otherwise would have felt cheated, but they were still nowhere even close to making any money.
Have you seen 'real' sports? This is normal.
When is there NOT gonna be one?
The day the smash community isn't having some weird stuff going on is the day hell freezes over.
But as everyone said: This was a bit of a nothing burger. The video title just made it seem more serious than it actually is.
It doesn't help that Smash is huge scene spanning multiple games, so when something happens in one Smash scene it basically happens in all of them.
Textbook cheating yeah, but ayo... doesn't this sound like an awesome idea for a tournament format? Basically a mix between singles bracket and crew battles. Each team registers as 1-3 players. Every set both teams blind pick their starting player & character. During the set a team can swap out their player after a game loss, but only once per set.
Isn't that like the crew battles from back in the day?
the biggest offense is calling themselves the phantom thieves
God I love persona 5 the music is used perfectly here. Great video. P.S lol to the people who don’t understand why having another player play for you shouldn’t be allowed especially in sponsored events.
Actually, the phantom theives are onto something. This is pretty fun to watch, so what if you had 5v5 tournaments where 1 is sent at a time, but no switching during the rounds. It would encourage greater character diversity and more counterplay possibility.
This just sounds like esports teams with extra steps.
Hell you could do it in set too with a best of 5 sets and players are sent in blind.
we do have that, its called crews
that's called a crew battle, they exist.
Tell us you've never seen a crew battle without saying it
I can't possibly understand how members of this community will bitch and moan about not being accepted as a genuine e-sport or respected as a community by Nintendo when this is the example we set, and with these idiots defending it like wtf. Cheating is cheating and when it comes to sponsored events, there needs to be a level of professionalism or we're always gonna be a joke. Damn im annoyed
Exactly.
I'm honestly surprised with the amount of people who are sympathizing with what is clearly cheating. I don't care how many _weeb cringe_ coats of paint you put on your cheating, *it's still cheating.*
Thing is though, I don't expect the smash community to have the emotional maturity to handle any real situation.
@@MiaoNya most people in the community are children especially the ult side this could’ve been a Robin Hood plot and people would be mad it’s literally only because of the persona shit people are ok with it
tbh, a Smash Bros Tag Team style side event sounds pretty cool though.
actual joker lore
Haha
This would have been great if they had been participating separately, yet joining the lobbies of the other members as they had their own fights (in tandem, so it's more epic). This would require notifying the TOs beforehand probably, but it would have been fair while still remaining cool as a concept.
This has got to be the funniest method of cheating ever conceived
Man, what they did would have been perfect for bad things happening to good people.
I hope they do it!
We should un-blacklist them from that tournament specifically
This is MUCH funnier than the last cheating scandal Hungrybox was involved in
Now I'm thinking of Smash Bros 1v1 Team tournaments, where teams of up to five people can take turns and send out whoever they think is best for the matchup against whoever they think the other team is gonna send out.
My favorite part to this video is when he realizes they’re called the Phantom Thieves, you can immediately see him look at his second monitor to put on persona 5 music
These clowns clearly didn't pay attention to Persona 5 when they played it or they would have remembered the Mementos Request called "Winners don't use cheats". Looks like the ones who really need their hearts stolen are them.
Alternate video title: HungryBox has a Stroke as Chat and Others Try to Defend Cheaters
Permaban all of them tbh. Stealing from the people who played fair of their $2,000 and cheating in a sponsored event is blacklist worthy.
“If one comes out and reveals the other’s identities” Hungrybox really became Sae Niijima right there.
But it was for the funny, so they automatically get off Scot free
It is a legitimate interrogation strategy used by cops which is why she uses it in the game in the first place.
@@mechashadow Yes, I wasn't saying it's a bad thing. I was just pointing out the plot similarity because it's a bit uncanny that they chose the Phantom Thieves moniker and are now echoing a plotline of the game.
Ok woah, we didn’t profit at all from the coinbox and offered to re-imburse ppl. None of the ppl we eliminated were seeded for top 8 anyway. Everyone denied payment because they felt like they hadn’t been cheated.
so vindictive, learn to enjoy things
I honestly hate cheaters, they disgust me.
Hard to believe that this is probably one of if not the most light hearted Smash drama that has ever happened
"WE HAVE TO FIND OUT WHO'S IN THE PHANTOM THEIVES"
2 days later and the community's reaction should be more of an issue than the cheating itself is. Because a large portion of it is saying that they are ok with it because it was "funny." So they are encouraging someone else to do it again
The Desk they're talking about isn't the same one who has done Street Fighter combo vids for ages, is it? I'd be heartbroken if it was
Bro what if TO’s just placed them in random places of the bracket as like a miniboss, but the player they fight will move on in bracket regardless. It’d be a fun intermission for tourney streams.
Great vid and really interesting drama! I know they're guilty and I somewhat empathize with them, but the fact there was money on the line just bums me out. Bad ending for sure. I hope they can all redeem themselves because they got great style and theming. Maybe if they pay back the real winners or have some more restrictions or something.
These Phantom Thieves are WILD
It's not cheating, it's breaking the rules with style.
No. This is just pathetic. No style, no substance.
Could you please explain…
dont be stupid
@@hi1itsme They wont, they know its cheating and just wanna make an dumb excuse for why its ok lol
Pretty sure this is just a Toy Story reference and not a serious defense.
This some high game meta. Mini bosses called Steves and now Phantom thieves! Its up to the hero's (competitors) to take them down lol
This reminds me of when a single account was getting world records in individual tracks on Mario Kart 64 and it ended up being a few guys doing different tracks.
Hbox getting sent the calling card was the coolest thing ever.
Tbh, one of a cheating scandals I can sympathies with. They had a theme that they stuck with, had style to pull it off and the skill to make it to the end.
They made it obvious enough that I don't think it had bad intentions, if you want to cheat by joining as group, there are easier and better ways to hide it. They pretty much outed themself as group just the way they used the phantom thiefs as main theme.
The money really makes it a bad ending, if there would have been nothing on the line it would have been a great story, but might have never reached as much attention. And attention is what the phantom thiefs are about :P
According to Duckhuntfan they didn't take any money
imagine caring about money over memes
@Asta x Noelle true, money is semitic
@@ulysses5439 They literally robbed players of earnings.
@@ulysses5439 what.
Steal your heart, more like steal yo money. These theives be real thieves and stain the phantom thief name.
My favorite part about this whole thing is some chat members are spamming that they are Phantom Theives in order to blend the real Phantom Theives
What I don't get is why not just enter as separate contestents in the tournament but decide to share the reward if any of them win the entire thing?
They play matchups
There was never an intention of winning prize money
honestly is hard to not think all 77 followers of the phantom thieves account knew about it/were involved.
i love that the editor just used p5 ost lmao you goated
These guys actin' more like Medjed than the Phantom Thieves.
this is literally the plot of p5
“And now I gotta figure who are the people in the Phantom Thieves”
I know this is a serious thing and I hope they make it right but that had me rolling, that’s literally what the PTs have to stop from happening in Persona 5 😂
I know they basically robbed a lot of people from potentially winning money, but holy shit this is the coolest cheating scandal of all time. They did this in the most awesome way possible, and to play devils advocate, they maybe weren't even thinking about that. They may have just thought it would be funny.
I agree but its still very irresponsible and caused actusl harm. 100% should be banned
This case was the funniest 😂😂😂
Joker will FINISH YOU off, Acid
Dayum. Dunno how I missed this video. Glad Yaldabox caught these guys.
YOU NEVER SEE IT COMMING
In the case that they actually didn’t earn money only 70% of the guilt has been lifted the other 30% is from them defeating other players that might have won the tournament
Aight at first I thought mid vid but all the persona themes coming in at the perfect time lol too good
His statement was good. They're so much shorter when there aren't any excuses lol
5:08 Chat said “Hungrycop” 😂
Bro the funniest thing about this all is how they acted like this was just a giant gag, while in reality it was several rule breaks at once. And if they would have stayed more shut, no one would have noticed
This is why Nintendo doesn't take the comp scene seriously
It fkn kills me how this has parallels to P5, the whole "Who are the Phantom Theifs" it has my dying. 😂
I've put like 50 hours into Persona 5 this past week and a half so seeing this whole video and hearing all the music is a mad surreal coincidence
Dude I didn’t know persona 5 got DLC and Hungrybox is in the game 😱
The p5 music is seriously on point though. props to the editor
When he said just play melee I felt that
Dude this is insanely good content. Needs way more than 90k
So if I put on a Hungry box morphsuit but didn't say I was hungry box, could I still enter his tournament?
Everyone gangsta till Hungrybox starts counting from 10
I want there to be joint account tournaments. If only that could be the future.
5:00 CLASSIC PRISONERS DILEMMA LOL FANTASTIC
Yeah, the payment and all that sucks. It is funny this essentially plays out like Persona 5, but the bad ending.
This was an incredibly entertaining video, nicely done🕵🏼♂️💯👏🏼
In Smogon this term is called ghosting where it is more then 1 playing against another
They cheated for literal money. "Let them have fun" absolute tool that one
This would have been such a great bit if it wasn't a sponsored tourney
Him asking them to snitch and turn in the other phantom thieves is Literally the plot to Persona 5.
This is like the first smash ultimate urban legend
People potentially STEALING THOUSANDS of $$$, and people in the chat saying, "Just let them have fun".
Song at the end?
so even base level if the placing didnt mater people also need to realize that it affects the integrety of the turnamen example you face one player then he sends in some one else with a dife char set that you havent practiced agenst or warmed up for between games. also the breaking of trust is a huge thing in that makes it hard to trust people involved or even the tourny in question because people are afraid of lets call it rigging. i agree this was bad but i understand some of the confusion for people who dont compeat or to
No tag teams in tournaments despite how cool that sounds
I wanted them to be like “we actually still gave the money to the other finalists to “keep quiet”” lol
I'm literally playing persona 5 right now. Brilliant timing HBox.
why does this feel like a Scooby Doo unmasking video lol. smh on the account in sponsored events tho
wait before anything, is he reppin' the band DIIV w that hoodie?? im shook if so
Damn when I first saw the calling card I was like “damn that would be sick” but then this happened…can’t trust anyone on the internet
That is really unfortunate because that's a really fun idea. They would only need to distinguish themselves as individual players for that to be a more legit kind of thing. Kinda like a clan on Xbox or something
If this happened in chess it would have COLOSSAL consequences. The fact that people are like "what is wrong with this" "let them have fun" just goes to show how young/naive the general audience of Smash is.
I would love to see the Phantom Thieves pull off a chess scandal
Good thing this isn't chess
