- helloooo long time no see LOL
this is my finals for this term! 20 second animation with an audio of my choosing. I found this neat mashup of Plagues from Prince of Egypt and El Tango de Roxanne from Moulin Rouge and it's always been a wish of mine to animate Achilles and hector's duel with it so! yeah
took some liberties with design and narrative because while ancient armor is Lovely I would die if I tried animating it I think haha. also Athena technically retrieves achilles' spear for him but that'd be hard to cram into the video so I just had hector's spear get stuck in the shield
but yeah! I'm pretty proud of this one :D - Krátké a kreslené filmy

By the way, I hope you know that the rage of Achilles was not for the death of Patroclus. The rage of Achilles was for the disrespect that Agamemnon showed to him by taking away Briseis, the slave with whom he was in love. In fact, the death of Patroclus signifies the end of Achille's rage and his return to battle.
You really can see how Achilles feels no remorse or emotion because he’s already dead inside

I like the detail though where blood falls out of his wound and it looks like he is crying, idk if thats very "no emotion"
No because Achilles had already killed hundreds of soldiers, there's nothing but emotion in his eyes, this was personal.

Bro, Hector was anything but a fool; plus, in the Aeneid, Hector’s ghost very clearly has his ears, eyes, and tongue. He did, after all, charge Aeneas to save the Trojan remnants.

Poor Achilles for he has lost his Patroclus, his other half.
AND Poor Andromache who had to watch her Hector die before her eyes before he’s to be carried by chariot around Troy… war is cruel
And his son who will be thrown off the walls😭
In the original myth Achilles did not have the blessing of the river Styx to make him invincible. He could have died as easily as Hector here. Hence the armor.
It was only in later renditions of the myth did he get his invincibility which I think cheapens his accomplishments.
It was his rage that made him immortal.
Once the object of his rage was destroyed and his Kleos secured only then did he die.
The blood coming out of the cut that looks like a tear...

The way he ripped out the spear was brutal! Andromache being the only moving person among a sea of frozen statues! The way the blood from the cut looked like a tear!!

ASKDNSLDKA SUPER INSANE AND NOT NORMAL OVER THIS. The walls of Troy look so freaking cool back there. And Hector's wife having to witness his death, god... The beats of their clash, and I just love how locked in with a slight bit of insanity Achilles has. His blonde and blue is perfect.

Just!! The dead stare of Achilles, who only seeks revenge, not peace, for he knows that killing Hector won't bring back Patrocholus, nor make his loss hurt less. The tears of blood. The absolute POWER behind such a clean, precise strike. I love this, this cold rage, bc at that point rage turns from hot to freezing, so cold it burns again, and that cold rage where you've long stopped caring is so perfectly captured here!!
Thank you for giving Andromache a place in your animations. My thesis is about the unheard voices of the Trojan women and the lengths they went to deal with the war so your work makes the words come to life

The way you do expressions is everything-
I was vibing to Plagues then Bam it was Roxanne.
What's interesting is the impact of color scheme on the feeling of the animation. Something about the unnatural color scheme (and if I'm not mistaken the lower frame rate) makes it feel viscerally gory. The richness of the colours in this one make it feel like it's straight from the epic.
Love the bits of hair that Achilles loses and how mad he looks about it. The flex of the spears is also so satisfying. I love how the their dialated pupils convey such different things. Achilles is laser (lazer?) focused and borderline inhuman, and his eyes show that. Hector is on the adrenaline high of his life, and somehow the tiny pupils show how much more he feels everything. The way Achilles stands up feels so bestial. Also the foreground moving in the begining and the painterly walls and Hector's fall and the way Andromache twists??
Definately one to watch frame by frame later.
ITS DONE!! CONGRATULATIONS ON THIS ACTUALLY BEAUTIFUL PIECE! The flowing movements are just so *chefs kiss* and the colours are beautiful. The fight is clear and well choreographed and I admire you for the amount of effort this must have taken🎉🎉

I didn't realize the first time I watched it that Achilles stabbed Hector with his own spear, that makes it more brutal

Well from what I heard, he had it comin'.
I really really like this, the deathblow coming down to one wrong move, one bad moment Hector could see coming but can't stop, Andromache's raw grief coming at us hard and reminding us that people are watching Hector fall, they know his death means their doom, and Achilles can't even shed a real tear. He's lost everything and gained nothing.
I really really recommend the Blues of Achilles by Joe Goodkin. I think it'd be your jam, I think everyone here would love it, more people need to hear about it. My favorite song is My Love (Andromache Mourns Hector) and in spirit it would make a perfect followup to Andromache's sadness here.

You forgot to mention that Achilles, after defeating Hector, disrespected his body. He tied him to his chariot and dragged him along the ground.

AUAUAGGRHRHRHGH god it’s so…… in the poem the scene is almost even worse, bc no one even told andromache abt it as soon as it happened, just bc there was so much going on i guess- she was still hiding up in the tower w their son. she literally came outside bc she heard a lot of commotion and feared the worst, just in time to see her husband’s corpse getting dragged off through the dirt, tied to the back of achilles’s chariot… i always felt so bad for her
Also the animation just lets it sink in how fuckin YOUNG achilles was. its never stated directly in the text i dont think, but his childhood is summarized and just going by the events of the war that it gives and the fact that he died before it was over, he literally could *not* have been past his 20s. Crazy
