Cold water Shiner fishing

  • I fully explain how to keep shiners alive and well. Also the basic tackle is covered, from the braided line to the weedless hooks and the reel with a clicker! Water temperature is the key to having the big bass bite. Rising temperatures are the best so as the day progresses, the temperatures rise and the big bass finally turn on!

Roland! I’ve never seen you shiner fish before! Way to change it up and look at that pig you caught. Good segment of fishing. Thanks for the info on your live well. Never heard of rock salt being effective. Good info. I love it when you get excited and the words, “son, that’s what I’m talking about”! Come out. Keep it up. I like this calmer style of fishing. We all like to hear you talk my man! God bless

One of my best fishing memories (and I have a lot) is shiner fishing on Lake Ockeechobee. My brother-in-law law and I left Roland Martin’s marina with Kevin Long for an amazing day. Dan and I both had PBs. His was 6 1/2#s. Mine was 5 1/2#s. Bigger then most fish at home. The final blessing was a double using our last 2 shiners. What a way to end the day. Thanks Roland for helping me relive that awesome day! God Bless!

Nice bass Roland. Yeah, guys who refuse to use wild golden shiners from late November through April here in Florida, are simply cheating themselves out of the total trophy and double digit bass they would catch in a lifetime, pure & simple. Very seldom do I go shiner fishing here during good fishing conditions between those months where I "fail" to catch 1 or several in the 7 lb range at least. And quite often bass of 8 to 10+. Multiple double digit fish in a single day is fairly common with some local knowledge and a little luck. December of 2018, I took a 9.5 on a shiner, then only 15 minutes later in the same area, I got another weighing 8.5 on a grass jig. Talk about the best of both worlds. I love tossing lures of all types while shiner fishing at the same time. Getting double struck on 2 separate shiner rigs PLUS another on a lure all at the same time is common too.......I did it just last month. Talk about having your hands full, lol.

Roland, Would love a video on the knot used for the balloon. Maybe just a “What’s happening” but I noticed it slips. I know I’ve used the knot but can’t remember the name. Just and idea. Thank you for being on CZcams! So glad to find You, Jimmy, Scott and others! Been watching you on here for several years and I’ve really learned a lot and have been able to use the info to help my friends and family and myself to catch fish and there’s NOTHING better than that! Appreciate your passion, thank you!

Same type of technique we use here in northern Australia for barramundi we use mullet as live bait. The most key important thing we have found to catch the barramundi that are slow an the weather is bad is stuff. Is on live bait. But to really get them while they are moody an don’t wanna eat a key is to really look after the bait. I guess some people don’t understand how much a great looked after bait will be presented to the fish sooo amazingly better an look so more natural an smell natural!!!!! Great tips an some little key secrets. So important to have Well looked after live bait to catch them quality big fish when they arnt to keen on anything else or very active at all!! Big fish are smart. An the more natural an well looked after bait is definitely worth it!

I used shiner fish a lot caught hundreds of 9 and 10lb bass haven't been able catch shiners and drifted away from it. It's a lot of fun and a good way catch big ones. You can catch big shiner s with small hook and a dough ball or wadded up bread up.bread. you can bait them with bread, fish pellets or hog ration. Do not be afraid to use big shiner the bigger the better to catch a giant.

Even if you’re a die hard lure fisherman. Live shiners is a fun way to fish. Use a straight shank circle hook and start reeling as soon as the bobber goes down. Fish without teeth inhale the bait. Quit wasting your time waiting for the bobber to stay down. If you’re not hooking up the bass is too small for the bait

Since shiners are a fresh water fish species, I presume the salt causes an osmotic stress on them, to which they produce more slime as a defense mechanism against water loss through diffusion across their skin? Is that why their mucus layer increases in salt water? I'd think so...
