  • I quit using blue plastic tarps for camping and pretty much everything else. Now I just use a canvas tarp and I love it. Cotton duck canvas is more expensive than cheap blue plastic tarps, but it's more durable, quiet, and useful for all sorts of things around camp. In this video, I share 10 ways I use a canvas tarp for camping all the time.

    As an "Old Schooler," I began camping under canvas 70+ years ago. Along the way I joined the modern crowd of nylon & Plastic. About 20 years ago I got involved in historical re-enacting & returned to canvas. At age 83, I am too old & physically unable to backpack, so my wife & I travel to a campsite & set-up our Canvas Shelters. Primitive camping under canvas is still a viable, enjoyable, & more economical way to camp in the long run. I thoroughly enjoyed your practical & variable approach to enjoying outdoor adventure "under canvas!" Thank you & may God bless you & your family!

    Additionally, plastic tarps degrade to dust with sun exposure. These canvas tarps that are treated with silicone last forever. I've been using canvas tarps from HF to cover boats for years, and have yet to have one degrade or lose waterproofing. Although heavy, they're durable, waterproof, and comfortable in a way a plastic tarp isn't.

    in the PNW, canvas is a pain because with the near constant rain, it never dries out. Canvas once wet is stiff, heavy (ie not for backpacking) and when you get home a pain to dry, especially if it's raining outside and you don't have a big empty garage. Other than that, I hate the blue tarps but I still use them.

      Have you tried the ole, Bed Sheet soaked in the Parafin/Mineral oil mixture??
      If youre not familiar, look it up on youtube.. cheap and kinda easy to make, you basically turn a bed sheet into a water proof tarp, it lasts longer than the plastic blue ones but it will be heavier.
      I've made a couple, one I even used citronella paraffin in hopes to make it mosquito resistant, but I havent tested that one yet to see if it actually repels..
      There's also a much more potent way to water proof a bed sheet with a mixture of Silicone and Naphtha.. but its way more expensive, like 30$ to waterproof a queen/king sized sheet.. and I wouldn't trust that against my skin or as a rain fly etc

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  Před měsícem +4

      I shake it out, beat it with sticks, sweep it off with a broom. And very rarely I hose it off at home. I'm not as picky as some folks are about that I guess, but a good shake or a sweep is good enough to get the stuff off that will make a mess inside. And that's also the beauty of canvas, stuff doesn't cling or stick to it like other materials.

    I almost thought this was a parody video.
    Cons of canvas tarps:
    -More difficult to clean than poly tarps
    -Significantly longer drying time compared to poly tarps
    -Not very waterproof compared to poly tarps
    -3-4x the cost of poly tarps
    -significantly heavier than poly tarps
    Pros of canvas tarps
    -Quieter than poly tarps

      Thanks for the comment and for watching. Other than them being more expensive, I'd put all your coins on the con list for blue tarps compared to canvas. I could see that for the real light duty canvas drop cloths for painting and such, but these treated ones like I have are super heavy duty, very waterproof, and easier to clean than a blue tarp in my experience. But you do you man. Cheers.

      I'm genuinely curious why you think that. Do you mind sharing?
      Per the FTC, I should disclose when I get something for free, which I try to do. But it's considered an ad or sponsored when money or is given in exchange for advertising in content. The company gave this to me 2 years ago with no strings attached and this video certainly wasn't part of the conversation. I only made it on a whim.
      But I want to be transparent and am trying to understand what makes a few people here and there see it differently like you did. I appreciate your feedback. Cheers.

      @addisonesslinger3653 no you won't. When we were issued it they were making battle rifles obsolete, going 5 56 too. Now a 7.62 is being bought and issued 1 per squad. Poly is by product of petrol, cheap to make. Militaries issue rarely on what works or what's needed, but cost. Seals used 👖 in Vietnam because the ripstop poly miz wasn't lasting. Australia issued 100% thick cotton., that lasted. My new issues dated 1978 ( not a vet but same pattern clothing into mid 1980s) lasted me years and years. I think my last pants died in 2010 or thereabouts. Just because it's Mil issue in no way means it's best, just the cheapest tender at that time. Poly nylons have just gotten cheaper and cheaper to produce is all. I found some old German Moleskins brand new I stay warm in those nicely and they'll see my time out

    “KEEP IDAHO PUBLIC” huh? I prefer a Shirt that says Let Idaho Public Lands be controlled by Idahoans. Federal ownership and management of Idaho and other western state’s public lands have been a nightmare. You cannot stop logging and start fire suppression. Let it burn and continue to buy our wood fiber from Canada and milled by the Chinese or manage our own resources for the benefit of both the land and Idahoans.

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  Před měsícem +1

      I appreciate that you appreciate this issue, it's something I care a lot about too. Honestly, I'm stoked that you chimed in, thank you.
      There's a lot to unpack there and while it's not an issue that's going to be resolved in a CZcams comment thread, the state of Idaho hasn't always proven to be the best steward of public land either, often authorizing landscape-altering logging practices or selling public land off to the highest bidder, thereby decreasing hunting and other recreation opportunities for Idahoans. The state's mandate for state-owned land is primarily to use it for economic gain. Given there's a finite supply of public land, that philosophy is short-sighted, in my opinion.
      The federal government seeks primarily to preserve, but I think multiple-use doctrine is the best approach over complete preservation and things can certainly be improved in their camp.
      Like most things, the best solution probably lies somewhere in the middle. While I'm game for some development, some recreation, and some other stuff that I probably don't personally like, I sure do love the untouched Frank Church Wilderness in the middle of the state as well, the largest undeveloped, designated Wilderness area in the lower 48. I don't think it's unreasonable to just leave some places alone.
      BTW, the shirt has nothing to do with who manages the land. It comes from the Idaho Wildlife Federation, a non-partisan organization dedicated to conservation of fish and wildlife, habitat, and the heritage of Idaho hunters and anglers. Pretty cool, check it out. idahowildlife.org

      @@theoutdoorempire Thanks for your well considered reply. I guess what we are talking about is which Government State/Federal mismanagement is better. One retort, no clear cut has ever damaged/altered the land more than a hot fire in a poorly managed forest, too much fuel, that practically sterilizes the ground and consumes trees from root system to tip.

    • @theoutdoorempire
      @theoutdoorempire  Před měsícem

      @@SaltShack Interesting thought. I read a report recently about how forest thinning and fuels reduction projects, including prescribed burns, were effective at reducing the spread and intensity of wildfires, but that the effort is not scalable to the degree required to keep ahead of the wildfires we're having. My guess is the best thing for the forests and land is commercial thinning projects that effectively reduce natural fire intensity to take things back to close to what they were probably like before we messed with the natural cycles in the first place a couple hundred years ago. I'm also guessing that timber companies are less inclined to take on thinning projects if they can clear cut somewhere else. Clear cutting has got to be a lot more profitable and operationally easier than thinning. So it'll take some serious willpower, and probably government incentives to first allow more thinning projects on public land (there are still some that happen), then get timber companies to do it at scale, all while keeping recreationists happy with their public land access. Complicated issues like this tend to yield stalemates and lawsuits at the federal level or firesales by locals because it's too hard to do and people are too divided and unwilling to compromise. I just hope my great grandkids still have public land to camp, hike, hunt, and fish on and that it's not all sold off to out-of-state rich dudes, clear cut for generations, or burned to a crisp.

    • @SaltShack
      @SaltShack Před měsícem

      @@theoutdoorempire Exactly! You are correct on all accounts. What you prescribed here is probably more efficient and effective, likely, with more local,control than trying to get representatives of districts that have heard about forests but never actually been in one to get on board.
