- I quit using blue plastic tarps for camping and pretty much everything else. Now I just use a canvas tarp and I love it. Cotton duck canvas is more expensive than cheap blue plastic tarps, but it's more durable, quiet, and useful for all sorts of things around camp. In this video, I share 10 ways I use a canvas tarp for camping all the time.

As an "Old Schooler," I began camping under canvas 70+ years ago. Along the way I joined the modern crowd of nylon & Plastic. About 20 years ago I got involved in historical re-enacting & returned to canvas. At age 83, I am too old & physically unable to backpack, so my wife & I travel to a campsite & set-up our Canvas Shelters. Primitive camping under canvas is still a viable, enjoyable, & more economical way to camp in the long run. I thoroughly enjoyed your practical & variable approach to enjoying outdoor adventure "under canvas!" Thank you & may God bless you & your family!
Have you treated your tarps to waterproof them?
Do you use tarps or did you purchase a canvas tent?
It’s great that you can get out and camp.
I love camping, even in the rain. I just put up a tarp.
The only time I’ve ever used blue tarps is when I need it real cheap quick fix one.
I’ve been using silver/brown for almost 2 decades now.
Basic 8x10 canvas tarp with grommets is $48 at Harbor Freight. Doesn't have webbing loops or extra reinforcement, but so far it's been pretty durable for me.
Nice! Sounds like a decent deal.
The 6×8' at HF with coupon a few weeks ago were $16!
Bought 3
Ran one though washer to remove light chem smell and used to wrap around sleeping cot pad in my
1972. 16' pickup camper...
Used HF zip ties on back from grommet to grommet..
As me and my doggo sleep on this
And he likes to " dig around" sometimes ..
Also looks retro and damned manly!
(Original orange/yellow/green flowers wasn't cutting it!)
I get the 9X12 canvas drop cloth for $15 and waterproof them myself. I’m working on a 16x20’ wall tent covered with a dozen treated canvas drop cloths (& a heavy vinyl rain fly.) if it doesn’t work I can always buy a readymade wall tent.
You might mention canvas in rain, when touched, if not waterproofed tends to drip from touched spot. Old memories.
Fair enough. If not treated well, it certainly can absorb water.
I remember seeing that in an episode of leave it to beaver.
He touched the roof of his canvass tent and it immediately began leaking. Lol
Can easily waterproof a canvas tarp
@@operationseekingtruth absolutely. New folk might not initially grasp the importance at first.
30% shoe goo 50% alcohol 20% distilled water in a cheap spray bottle (1 use unless thoroughly cleaned with alcohol at the minimum)
Hot day+ do the seams and stitching first. Then slow wide saturating sweeps. Seams multiplied. You’re welcome
I moved to Oregon and thought the blue tarp was the state flag!
😂
The blue plastic tarp is the democrat party's banner of status and is displayed mainly in illegal junkie camps.
😂
Your close, it is blue.
😂😂😂
Canvas makes a good outter layer for a cowboy roll/bed.
Just add a wool blanket, maybe a fleece and a reflective thermal and your good for at least 3 seasons.
Canvas is a lot heavier than a siltarp for backpacking so this would only be good for car camping.
@@Sgt.Kayaker which is what most of us weekend warriors and fatties do anyway. Cheap useful and easily replaced
Which he stated at the beginning of the video.
Says the people who are only concerned with weight
I use a tentsmiths 8x8 oil tarp for back packing. Comes in at 1.9kg. I have a basic set up so my base weight is still only 6.8kg. I prefer how durable it is, the feel of it and its reliability.
Additionally, plastic tarps degrade to dust with sun exposure. These canvas tarps that are treated with silicone last forever. I've been using canvas tarps from HF to cover boats for years, and have yet to have one degrade or lose waterproofing. Although heavy, they're durable, waterproof, and comfortable in a way a plastic tarp isn't.
I love the truck tarp. So simple but so effective. Thumbs up
It really is!
in the PNW, canvas is a pain because with the near constant rain, it never dries out. Canvas once wet is stiff, heavy (ie not for backpacking) and when you get home a pain to dry, especially if it's raining outside and you don't have a big empty garage. Other than that, I hate the blue tarps but I still use them.
Have you tried the ole, Bed Sheet soaked in the Parafin/Mineral oil mixture??
If youre not familiar, look it up on youtube.. cheap and kinda easy to make, you basically turn a bed sheet into a water proof tarp, it lasts longer than the plastic blue ones but it will be heavier.
I've made a couple, one I even used citronella paraffin in hopes to make it mosquito resistant, but I havent tested that one yet to see if it actually repels..
There's also a much more potent way to water proof a bed sheet with a mixture of Silicone and Naphtha.. but its way more expensive, like 30$ to waterproof a queen/king sized sheet.. and I wouldn't trust that against my skin or as a rain fly etc
switch to brown & green ... easier on the eyes in the woods ...
I have that smell in my memory banks so vividly.
Canvas over plastic any day of the week for this guy.
GREAT no, SPECTACULAR ideas for canvas tarp uses - Thank you for sharing
I love waxed canvas tarps for vehicle camping or other stationary work. Once you have to pack it into the woods on your back it becomes a problem.
Indeed.
After seeing the simple shelter possible in the back of a pickup I think I need a canvas tarp!
The negatives I remember ablit canvas besides weight is eventual smell regardless of storage, not windproof, not really waterproof. Classic style and durable AF for sure but I’ll be sticking with sil or sil-poly tarps.
I live in a dry climate so as long as you put it away dry, it doesn't get funky. But I bet that's an issue where it's humid no matter what.
mold & mildew ....
Old school can definitely be better in some cases.
I've been using milsurp marpat tarps. They are made of ripstop nylon and have a coyote colored urethane coating on the bottom side. They're a little heavy for their size but pretty tough. I'll have to give these canvas tarps a try for heavier Duty use.
Harbor Freight has a great green canvas tarp. I bought one and waterproofed it myself. They have a 6x8 in store and an 8x10 online.

Springbar finally has 10x14 tarps back in stock. Ordered one for my Skyliner.
Awesome! I like that option.
I think you might be right. I’m convinced
Not available. It doesn't know when it will be available. Looks really nice and thick. Blessings
I use it for firewood, keeping bugs separated from my gear
Good idea
LOVE your Sprinbar Skyliner! Springbar makes the BEST canvas tent in the world and they're MADE IN AMERICA!!! USA.USA.USA
I love it too!
Keep the blue, it makes an impenetrable ground sheet and bed cover. Dirt cheap and you can just leave it behind in your truck; no one is touching it.
If you have a porch or in the wild, tie out the four corners, throw a thin air mattress on and sleep in it like a big wide hammock.
Love that idea!
Good honest review.... Thanks
Thanks for watching!
@@Plain-Ole-Chuck you’re good honest Chuckle
I prefer canvas and veiw them as an investment. I would never treat them poorly, except maybe a dedicated ground tarp.
Rigging up a tarp over a van/truck/car really cools it down.
Canvas tarp all the way. I'm surprised you are still pounding those stakes into the ground. I've got to lag screws with washers and an impact drill.
Ya I keep meaning to try that, but also hesitant about relying on an electrical tool in the woods.
AquaQuest tarps are what I use.
Canvas was replaced for good reason ,
Going back to it seems a fashion trend more than a practical one .
Interesting thought. I don't see it as having been replaced. More options were simply added along the way. Thanks for watching.
if for no other reason . . . spreading out a plastic tarp by yourself with just a 'whisper' of wind is irritating enough to drive me to the looney bin!
Canvas has some weight and stays put . . . that's good enough for me. LOL
But you can also use a blue tarp as a shade/shelter, a stuff cover, a rug, a mat, a gear hauler, no? The main advantages of the canvas tarp are less dirt transfer and it's quieter? (I don't use a blue tarp; I also use a canvas tarp. It just occurred to me you can use a blue tarp for all the things described in this video.)
Indeed a blue tarp can do these things. I neglected to articulate the pros and cons of canvas over plastic here. Thanks for the feedback.
Some good use cases in this video, canvas definitely superior to the cheap woven polyethylene tarps from the hardware store. But they are heavy, well suited to car camping but not easily backpackable for hiking or lightweight applications, I really do like my silicon coated nylon tarp, super lightweight and practical but I wouldn't use it on the ground nearly as much as I could with a canvas one.
sleep on a shower curtain ... cheap & durable ....
Thanks for this Vid. Been looking for a solution for the front of the tent and something to put on the ground when rolling the tent, bags, mats, etc.
This would be perfect for that. Cheers.
I like hearing about canvas tarps rather than the blue.
Great video. I made a tarp video recently too, but for the regular old plastic ones. I've been meaning to upgrade to tha canvas ones though. Thx for the video!
Wish I could get great deals on my camping supply
A canvas tarp saved Rambo!
If that ain't proof of a quality piece of gear, I don't know what is.
He also ripped it with his bare hands.
So - killer question - how do you keep your canvas tarp clean? I see you dragging it inside the tent, and then using as a doormat - after it catches all that dirt, how do you keep it clean?
I shake it out, beat it with sticks, sweep it off with a broom. And very rarely I hose it off at home. I'm not as picky as some folks are about that I guess, but a good shake or a sweep is good enough to get the stuff off that will make a mess inside. And that's also the beauty of canvas, stuff doesn't cling or stick to it like other materials.
If a company sent me a canvas tarp for free, I'd use it, too, and promote it.
Canvas over blue plastic? Sure. Canvas over 40D lightweight nylon? Not so sure. I can certainly see the value in canvas for car camping, but I would still pack a lightweight nylon tent for easier deployment for shade and shelter.
I have a canvas tarp and recently bought an AquaQuest Safari 10x10 which Nylon 70D (I don't backpack so don't need ultralight). I have use cases for both, and next car camping trip I might take both. Canvas is really good cover, and great footprint for dispersed camping when there is lots of gravel or sticks. Nylon is easier to work with for the various shelters.
Great idea.
great video
Perfect size 5m x 6m! But it is heavy
Indeed they are heavier.
You can mix 50/50 Clear silicone caulk and Mineral spirits and paint the canvas with it. It is then waterproof, stain and fire resistant.
In Washington, a blue tarp is the state flag!
5:39 Are those children ... gambling?!
😂 Heavens no! It's a game called Dutch Blitz.
When I was a kid, all my dad had was canvas tarps. Way before polyethylene tarps even existed
don't listen to him, never ditch your blue tarps. blue roofs are the only ones that survive "natural desasters"
lol !😂
Keep both👍
I would assume coating one with Permethrin would be ok as a tick deterrent?
A little over excited for a tarp 😅
Sounds about right 😂
Nice content, thanks.
Thank you too!
Waterproof it first! Waterproofing will also extend the life of the tarp.
Get u some PVC pipe. Make a cover wagon n back of truck. I've done that works great. ❤❤❤❤
moving blanket - $8
How heavy is it, compared to a tarp?
I have a 10x15 canvas tarp from the 60s that is still far superior to any "new" canvas tarp.
I think you need 4.
Actually, you do need to be fastidious...and even more so. Great vid and I agree with the utility of a canvas tarp. Good tip. That being said, the number of completely clueless people out there throwing things into a new truck or trailer is only on the rise...especially since covid sent a ton of "city folk" into the wilderness. So please, never, ever tell the general public that they need to be less attentive to appropriate tiedown techniques and gear. Thanks
Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated!
Hey good video what size are you using
8 ft x 10 ft.
Blue Tarps aka Tonasket Silk lol
What's the waterproof rating on these? 2,000mm? 3,000mm?
Good question, but I don't know. The company that makes the one I have doesn't publish that information.
Weight ?
Good question. Not sure exactly but I'd guess mine is 10-15 lbs.
Loved the ideas for the canvas tarp, but I loved more the size of that tent! What brand is it?!
It's a Springbar Skyliner, a canvas tent made in the USA. The footprint is 10 ft x 14 ft and the nice big roof makes it feel very roomy. You can find a full review and a couple other videos on it in my channel.
That Springbar tent is WAY too heavy. I recommend Nortent Gamme 4 and Gamme 6 tents.
Every car camper.....when ya backpack ta destinations away frum people, that's too heavy, sill nylon all day any day every day...
The canvas tarps are way more durable.
A door mat? Why not get an actual door mat? Tarps slip and slide. And your tarp gets dirty. Makes no sense.
Good lordy, city folk camping 1-0-1 , good comedy
Glad you had a laugh, thanks for watching.
Mildew???
Definitely possible if you pack it away wet. Gotta let it dry before you store it somewhere it can't air out.
*I NEED a White Duck Sponsorship! CAll me!*
Looks like the 8x12. Cost, currently $84 on Amazon. 8x12 10-mil silver plastic tarp, $26. Glad you scored your premium canvas tarp for free, but really? Really?
Really. Pay once, cry once.
lol guess I should have watched the whole video first
😁
Great content but the audio was terrible. EDIT: Let me clarify, I did not have trouble hearing or understanding the audio but the quality was poor in comparison to previous videos. I am not an audio engineer but it wasn't as good as some of the other videos I have watched.
It was fine for me.
Fine for me too.
Thanks for mentioning that. I recently got some new wireless microphones and I think I don't have the settings right between the mics and the camera. I noticed it too but there was only so much we could do in editing to fix it. I'll work on it for next time. Cheers!
What! Sure it’s not a your side of the audio? Actually very easy to understand, not distracted by non voice audio.
I don't think are heard any good reasons to abandon the blue poly tarp for a canvas tarp.
I almost thought this was a parody video.
Cons of canvas tarps:
-More difficult to clean than poly tarps
-Significantly longer drying time compared to poly tarps
-Not very waterproof compared to poly tarps
-3-4x the cost of poly tarps
-significantly heavier than poly tarps
Pros of canvas tarps
-Quieter than poly tarps
Thanks for the comment and for watching. Other than them being more expensive, I'd put all your coins on the con list for blue tarps compared to canvas. I could see that for the real light duty canvas drop cloths for painting and such, but these treated ones like I have are super heavy duty, very waterproof, and easier to clean than a blue tarp in my experience. But you do you man. Cheers.
Now the lasers will get you.
😳
They are much bulkier. Maybe if you have a truck and have more room. Other wise no!
Heavier, yes. Bulkier, a bit, but not dramatically so.
4.5 kg? Too heavy.
Definitely too heavy for hiking. I just use it for car camping.
kislux I love you so much and watching your videos makes my day brighter
you'd have to bring like ten tarps to do all that - I call BS
I think the cheap blue tarps should be banned worldwide. They are sight polution.
I got a camo one so you dont notice. 🤣🤣🤣
You need to lay off the crackpipe
RIGHT?!!
I lived off grid and the last thing I wanted to do was signal “hey I’m over here creepies!“
A few years ago my buddies roof was ripped off by a tornado. He didn’t mind them so much.
I’ve never used blue tarps….. brown tarps work better to cover everything including firewood…. Blends into the woods better….
If a company sent you this tarp for free, then it is a sponsored video.
I'm genuinely curious why you think that. Do you mind sharing?
Per the FTC, I should disclose when I get something for free, which I try to do. But it's considered an ad or sponsored when money or is given in exchange for advertising in content. The company gave this to me 2 years ago with no strings attached and this video certainly wasn't part of the conversation. I only made it on a whim.
But I want to be transparent and am trying to understand what makes a few people here and there see it differently like you did. I appreciate your feedback. Cheers.
I can't take you seriously in that hat
Neither can my wife.
Cooton clothing is terrible omg the clothing of death🤣🤣 yall do know NATO armies isseud 100% cotton uniforms in 50s 60s, had excercised in rain, slept in snow, and lived. Like if it was that bad thered be a 500 x 500 mile cenetery for soldiers who died in peacetime excercises 🤣🤣
Indeed, you're not wrong. Also, the shirt I was wearing was made of cotton. 😂
@@theoutdoorempire yep best be careful don't wear 👖 to get the mail you'll die die I tell you😂😂😂
The troops survived but not in comfort. You won't find much mil issued cotton these days.
@addisonesslinger3653 no you won't. When we were issued it they were making battle rifles obsolete, going 5 56 too. Now a 7.62 is being bought and issued 1 per squad. Poly is by product of petrol, cheap to make. Militaries issue rarely on what works or what's needed, but cost. Seals used 👖 in Vietnam because the ripstop poly miz wasn't lasting. Australia issued 100% thick cotton., that lasted. My new issues dated 1978 ( not a vet but same pattern clothing into mid 1980s) lasted me years and years. I think my last pants died in 2010 or thereabouts. Just because it's Mil issue in no way means it's best, just the cheapest tender at that time. Poly nylons have just gotten cheaper and cheaper to produce is all. I found some old German Moleskins brand new I stay warm in those nicely and they'll see my time out
Comedy or stupidy overload? 😂
“KEEP IDAHO PUBLIC” huh? I prefer a Shirt that says Let Idaho Public Lands be controlled by Idahoans. Federal ownership and management of Idaho and other western state’s public lands have been a nightmare. You cannot stop logging and start fire suppression. Let it burn and continue to buy our wood fiber from Canada and milled by the Chinese or manage our own resources for the benefit of both the land and Idahoans.
I appreciate that you appreciate this issue, it's something I care a lot about too. Honestly, I'm stoked that you chimed in, thank you.
There's a lot to unpack there and while it's not an issue that's going to be resolved in a CZcams comment thread, the state of Idaho hasn't always proven to be the best steward of public land either, often authorizing landscape-altering logging practices or selling public land off to the highest bidder, thereby decreasing hunting and other recreation opportunities for Idahoans. The state's mandate for state-owned land is primarily to use it for economic gain. Given there's a finite supply of public land, that philosophy is short-sighted, in my opinion.
The federal government seeks primarily to preserve, but I think multiple-use doctrine is the best approach over complete preservation and things can certainly be improved in their camp.
Like most things, the best solution probably lies somewhere in the middle. While I'm game for some development, some recreation, and some other stuff that I probably don't personally like, I sure do love the untouched Frank Church Wilderness in the middle of the state as well, the largest undeveloped, designated Wilderness area in the lower 48. I don't think it's unreasonable to just leave some places alone.
BTW, the shirt has nothing to do with who manages the land. It comes from the Idaho Wildlife Federation, a non-partisan organization dedicated to conservation of fish and wildlife, habitat, and the heritage of Idaho hunters and anglers. Pretty cool, check it out. idahowildlife.org
@@theoutdoorempire Thanks for your well considered reply. I guess what we are talking about is which Government State/Federal mismanagement is better. One retort, no clear cut has ever damaged/altered the land more than a hot fire in a poorly managed forest, too much fuel, that practically sterilizes the ground and consumes trees from root system to tip.
@@SaltShack Interesting thought. I read a report recently about how forest thinning and fuels reduction projects, including prescribed burns, were effective at reducing the spread and intensity of wildfires, but that the effort is not scalable to the degree required to keep ahead of the wildfires we're having. My guess is the best thing for the forests and land is commercial thinning projects that effectively reduce natural fire intensity to take things back to close to what they were probably like before we messed with the natural cycles in the first place a couple hundred years ago. I'm also guessing that timber companies are less inclined to take on thinning projects if they can clear cut somewhere else. Clear cutting has got to be a lot more profitable and operationally easier than thinning. So it'll take some serious willpower, and probably government incentives to first allow more thinning projects on public land (there are still some that happen), then get timber companies to do it at scale, all while keeping recreationists happy with their public land access. Complicated issues like this tend to yield stalemates and lawsuits at the federal level or firesales by locals because it's too hard to do and people are too divided and unwilling to compromise. I just hope my great grandkids still have public land to camp, hike, hunt, and fish on and that it's not all sold off to out-of-state rich dudes, clear cut for generations, or burned to a crisp.
@@theoutdoorempire Exactly! You are correct on all accounts. What you prescribed here is probably more efficient and effective, likely, with more local, control than trying to get representatives of districts that have heard about forests but never actually been in one to get on board.
