Ironically, the smartest student in the class is also the one who is the most willing to share stuff with the public.
Well done, Mercedes. You guys deserve all the glory.
I partly agree with you, they are for sure the smartest in class.
But I think they wouldnât have done this video if there wasnât a rule change.
They aren't sharing anything that everyone else doesn't already do or know. Some of you people are really easily impressed, to a hilarious level. I wonder how you'd react if they actually started talking about real engineering, and not this superficial stuff meant to impress 8 year olds, he's literally only showing you buttons on a steering wheel, there's absolutely nothing even remotely special about it.
They really said nothing in this video, most of this can be applied to every team on the grid. The true secrets are to do with the development of the car.
They are the team to beat,
the overpowered big bad villain that the underdog teams needed to overcome in their hero journey,
the reason why races are boring according to many people.
I think this is an effort by the Mercedes to build up a more fan friendly image.
@BeyerT1
Wow, I donât know what happens to you haters these days. Apparently, everyone knows theyâre just showing and explaining the buttons on a god damn steering wheel, but do you really think that we, the normal audience, already knew about every detail of the car and the equipment of every team??? Yeah, thereâs no secret technology being exposed here, but at least the majority of F1 fans get to take a closer look at what they usually canât see clearly during live races. Peopleâs curiosity got somewhat satisfied. Isnât it entertaining? Isnât it why you choose to watch races rather than take a damn nap?
If people are glad to see this kind of âeasyâ videos being uploaded on CZcams, then why the bloody hell are other teams not trying to do such an âeasyâ marketing? Oh..., I forgot that theyâre all busy building a midfield car.
Donât pretend like youâre the only one with a brilliant brain.
I like this guys energy, he would be a great teacher!
Maybe the oldest guy in the track team - but VERY good.

Just a little secret, they never tell you: the driver actually receives audio feedback when clicking some buttons. For example, when changing the brake balance there is an audio sound to tell them the setting it is in. Stuff like the gear they are in they get that audio feedback from the engine sound directly, but for other stuff this is how it avoids them having to look at the steering wheel all the time. Now you know!
Damn that's sick and helpful as
Interesting
The question is, how do you know?

STEERING WHEEL!!!!!
I can barely take my eyes off the road to change temperature on the climate control or change the radio station! Its mind blowing how these guys can fiddle with brake balance, strat modes, diff settings when everything is moving so fast around you. Amazing.
If you have your car for like a year then you should be able to adjust the radio or AC without looking. Just by feel and knowing how the layout of the dash is. Most modern cars have all these controls in the steering wheel.
That's because your settings aren't right next to your thumbs. Imagine how easy it would be if all you needed was right on the steering wheel

Almost never. And thatâs why Iâm slowly becoming more and more of a Mercedes fan. I used to be so bored of their dominance (still am), but their human rights activism and open education to fans is really cool. I hope Toto doesnât leave at the end of the year like itâs rumored.

You guys are the model team, not only w.r.t. competition, but also in regards to openness. Thank you!
Damn, i love this videos from Mercedes!
Thank you dudes for sharing this with us! Every single new video on the series gets better and better!
I swear when I was just getting into F1, I was told the bottom of the car and the steering wheel setup were the two biggest things teams try to hide from each other.
Therefore this feels like Merc is saying to the other teams: "Just take our secrets! Then maybe you guys will become real competition.". . .I am just saying that this is a top class flex and is another reason why I love this team.
In the past this was certainly true. Today the electronics are all regulated so there isn't much physical trickery going on. That doesn't completely stop programming trucks like Renault (was that last year?).
looks like they flexed too much phahahahaha
Regarding suspension systems, how does a modern F1 system work and what are some aspects of it that are bleeding edge for translation from racing-to-road technologies?
i find this so interesting to learn about because the wheels are actually so complicated and I think itâs amazing how easily the drivers use these throughout the race
It takes a whole lot of confidence to openly admit and own up to when things go wrong. There are a few teams out there who should take a page out of your book. Kudos!
So weird to hear an American accent from an F1 engineer. Itâs lonely for us American F1 fans

Hi Evan, that was a very in depth view of the wheel!! Im curious to see everything about the cooling systems that you guys have in the garage!
Cheers!
Thanks for daily uploading content! It's feels great to learn. :)
I'm fascinated that they showed the back of the steering wheel! Normally the F1 teams make a secret out of their shifting and clutch pedals.
Well, they're essentially the same on all steering wheels in that all of them have two shift-paddles, and two clutch-paddles, although RP has separate paddles above the shifters for adjusting brake balance, and some other drivers on the left-hand side for operating DRS.
well they've got nothing to lose. literally nothing to lose.
They 3D print the clutch pedals to fit the fingers of each driver perfectly, you can see Hamilton and Bottas have slightly different levers when they use the camera behind the steering wheel during races.
LTA Headphones wow thatâs a fascinating detail i never noticed, see their shifters r kindve like on a pivot which surprise me cuz surely it would feel strange
@@ltsheadphones8634 yea that's cause Hamilton places his hand horizontally over the wheel unlike everyone else at the race start.
Question: can u explain about the computers and softwares used in a f1 car ??
I don't they will let out too much details about those things... It will differ from team to team and it really gets so technical that it is hard to grasp it all , even for F1 enthusiast who is having technical background....
Another issue is of proprietary related... And that's why every team is so secretive about it...
Although, if you want to learn about How software and sensors are deployed on a modern F1 car, you can look up for a webinar hosted by Indian researcher who worked building Naval ships... I forgot his name but will put a link here if it comes to my mind
Yeah correctđ

Mercedes, you forgot to mention the weight, the size and the hidden buttons on the back of the wheel maybe next time maybe.
As a fan I can say that the steering wheel is the most fascinating aspect of the F1 car. Its small compared to the chassis itself but the steering wheel has to be perfectly made because the driver uses it for so many functions. Its amazing what Mercedes continue to do
You guys are so sweet. You try and do everything you can do for us fans. Thank you sooo much
Thank you for sharing this. I was always curious about the steering wheel and what role it played in an F1 car. It is a bit more than I was expecting it to do. Love y'alls behind the scenes and technical explanations. The question I have is regarding the wheels and wheel gun. I heard that they are on and off in the same direction. How is that possible?
