I liked Lydia's line about sleeping with "prince valium", but my favorite is "Open this door you dead people, or we'll bust it down and drag you out by the ropes you hanged yourself with!!" Catherine O'Hara is amazing. I love that Delia's first instinct when she finds out her house is haunted is that she can bully the ghosts. This movie is so silly. Probably my favorite Tim Burton. Edward Scissorhands, Batman, and The Nightmare Before Christmas are excellent too.
Hahaha! That line was hysterical! Catherine O'Hara was phenomenal in this. She plays over the top characters beautifully. I'm definitely going to have to see this again.
"I'm not your coach. He survived."
"I've seen the Exorcist about 167 times and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it"
The fly yelling " Help me! " is a reference to the end of the 1958 film "The Fly".
The remake of which stars Geena Davis. Small world...
@@dupersuper1938 _And_ the tv series of _The Exorcist_ at least the first season, isn't that _crazy?_ 😀
I'm honestly with Beetlejuice 100% on the Exorcist thing... that film is so f'ing stupid and silly I laugh out loud whenever it's on... can't even fathom how someone could find it scary. I mean.... I *guess* if you believe demonic possession is real and believe that they care about your imaginary friend's name getting shouted at them repeatedly, and you don't find the entire premise inherently silly, then... maybe?? but even in that case, the makeup and FX are so goofy and everything is just so incredibly over the top. Seems like a comedy to me. Though not as side-splitting as the Blair Witch Project.
@@nooneofconsequence1251 I feel that way about The Shining. It keeps getting put at the top of horror movie polls and it's not even a little bit scary. Don't get me started on Blair Witch. That film is annoying. Not scary.
I've never seen such a deep dive into *Beetlejuice* most people just stay on the surface & have fun so this was an interesting take
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fun fact: The film was originally going to be called "Ghost House." Because the studio thought that no one would want to see a film called Beetlejuice.
To be fair, the idea of juice from a beetle _is_ pretty gross.
Excellent fun fact!
*House Ghosts like "housewife" or "house cat". Very dull idea from the studio, but Tim Burton definitely had the better ideas.
I think this is one of the best examples of a 'spooky' movie versus a 'scary' movie and I agree that it is perfect for spooky season! Love your enthusiasm as always and if you're looking for another movie that fits this type of weird kind of movie, you should look into 'The Burbs' starring Tom Hanks. Your sweater looks cozy and fun! Good luck with your future reactions!
I'm so glad you liked this!! I haven't seen The Burbs, but I've enjoyed every Tom Hanks movie I've seen so I'm sure it's great! I'll put it on the watchlist. ❤️
There was a animated TV show in 1991. Lydia and Beetlejuice are friends in it. She travels to the neitherworld and explore it together. I use to love that show when I was a kid. There's a Beetlejuice 2 coming out in 2024 too.
It appears Jane did sell their house while they were out.
Keaton started in comedies such as Mr Mom and Gung Ho. It was a surprise to see him as Batman.
You're right!! She did sell their house! That's brilliant.
@@reactswithjax React to Gung Ho! Very not politically correct (Times were different back then) but funny.
Multiplicity
Night Shift
Fav line, of course from Lydia: a tie between "My life is one big dark room" and "I myself am... strange and unusual."
Those are awesome lines!
Just stumbled onto your channel and I'm really glad I did. Did a little binge-watching cuz I adore your reactions, their always fun, entertaining, your commentary is on point, and your choice of movies is excellent. It also doesn't hurt that your such a lovely and good hearted woman with a heart melting smile. Kudos.
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. I'm overjoyed that you like my reactions so much! ❤️
Hey Jax! What a great reaction! I loved this movie growing up as a kid. My sister and I would always sing the songs together. As a matter of fact, kids liked this movie so much it got its own Saturday morning cartoon.
That's so cool that it got it's own cartoon! I can see why kids would love this movie. It's filled with over the top silliness and fun. So glad you enjoyed this reaction! ❤️
Fun reaction! I think BJ says 20:59 ‘the only one I can deal with is Edgar Allan Poe’s daughter, she understands me’ is referring to how Charles sort of looks like paintings of Poe with that suit he wears to the dinner party and that Poe wrote about birds and was reportedly a bird watcher like Charles.
I grew up with this one (it was released in 1988). Always loved how hilariously creepy it was. My kids want to see it but they're not quite old enough to get the humor or avoid the nightmares yet.
any good childhood needs some solid nightmares though. I remember sneaking in to watch some of the first Terminator, couldn't sleep for weeks because that damn robot skeleton chasing me.
Movies seem so much scarier when you're a kid!
@@reactswithjax Is that why I'm so terrified of you??!
Kidding! ;)
@@earthwormandruw I'm a full grown man, and after watching Jax react to the John Wick films, if I saw her in a dark alley, I would run away.
Imagine being Tim Burton, seeing Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, and saying to yourself: "Now THAT's who I want to play Batman!"
Talk about being able to recognise potential!
There was a Beetlejuice Saturday morning cartoon back in the 90s that had Beetlejuice and Lydia being best friends.

What a perfect song for this movie!
loved the reaction! the thing about beetlejuice is that he's not necessarily evil, he's just shady. he's kind of like a sleazy used car salesman but for exorcism haha. also one of my favorite things about the movie is how quickly beetlejuice actually did solve the problem when lydia needed his help lol, he showed up and solved it in like 10 minutes
Awesome reaction Jax😊probably my favourite Tim Burton movie the entire cast is amazing in this but Micheal Keaton rules as Beetlegeuse love the first full scene with him switching back to Mjcheals voice talking about his qualifications and the hand gesture he makes when he gets asked if he can be scary haha😂also the dinner scene will always be one of the greatest movie scenes ever! And off course Winona is awesome in this two and turned her into one of my first crushes as a kid 😂m
Also yes bring on Avengers Infinity War!!
Thank you! I'm SO glad you enjoyed this! I can see why this is your favorite Tim Burton film. It was such a fun movie and perfect for Halloween. I completely agree that the initial monologue Michael Keaton gives is incredible! What a wonderful performance. And that dinner scene was wild!
Danny Elfman did the amazing score/soundtrack to this movie and Michael Keaton is just superb, literally one of his career highlights. Can’t wait for the sequel
Sequel???
yea @@earthwormandruw - Burton and Keaton have agreed to do it and I guess it may still not be started until later in 2024 as long as all the strikes are settled
@@michaelceraso1977 Sometimes I see Keaton around, he live in my town and gets snacks from this lil market/liquor store on the main road. He's super nice.
@coldflamebluedragon196 Danny Elfman is wonderful! I haven't seen too much of Michael Keaton's work, but he is such a wonderful actor with a great range. I'm looking forward to the sequel as well. ❤️
@@reactswithjaxhope you watch Mr. Mom and Multiplicity for more keaton
The scene where the fly says help me before getting eaten is a direct homage to the original The Fly (1958). Each year that goes by, fewer people catch that. In fact, I have never seen a reaction that they did.
I have never seen The Fly! That's cool that it was a reference to that movie though. I like when films play off one another.
Well then, you probably never saw The Fly remake from 1986 either. Geena Davis was the female lead. So in essence it was a double homage to both movies.
Not even 5 minutes in, and the dislike for Jane is giving me life 😂😂😂. You are a treasure, Jax.
I love that we can bond over our mutual dislike for Jane! Haha!
Its always been my contention from the beginning that the Dog was Jane's...
@@CorwinPatrick Seems legit.
That’s one deliciously weird movie, and I love it for it
Deliciously weird is a great description!
The effects were pretty impressive for 1988 as well! Have you seen A nightmare before christmas? Also a great halloween movie!
The effects are great! I have seen A Nightmare Before Christmas. That ones is such a great Halloween and Christmas movie.
I was practicing piano when the first Batman came out. Danny Elfman got my attention, but it's the Beetlejuice theme that gor me invested. My piano teacher was gracious enough to switch from classical to soundtracks. I transcribed the theme for a duet, but family drama intervened before we could learn it.
I suspect our dead couple look normal because being permanently wet would be too inconvenient to film.
Beetljuice was “the ghost with the most, babe!”.
I can't wait for Beetlejuice 2 to come out next year in September
That's going to be a fun movie to see!
Always a fun watch with Jax. Being a lifetime Southern California resident, I've had opportunities not available to many people. Back in the day, 1979, I went up to CBS Television City tio watch a taping of the short-lived Mary Tyler Moore Hour. As is typical with live television tapings, they had a "warmup" act to whip the audience into a laughing frenzy, so to provide the hilarity for the necessary soundtrack for the show. In the case of this show, it was a very young Michael Keaton, who also served as a minor player on the cast. He was still developing his chops, but we all know they developed well. It's a great memory, having seen him at 28 in a role very few saw him do ... standup. The show only existed for a single season, but it turned out to be a launching pad for a remarkable career. This movie is sort of Tim Burton's take on an old Cary Grant movie, "Topper" in which a ghost couple live with an older man and help him through life. Thanks for sharing, Jax. You're a true treasure.
Topper is a great film though i preferred the second one.🤓
@@gomikmay It was great too. The television series also starred Leo G. Carroll, but replaced Cary Grant and Constance Bennett with Robert Sterling and Anne Jeffreys. It was a lot of fun to watch when I was a kid.
What a wonderful memory to share! That must have been so fun to be in the audience. I had no idea Michael Keaton ever did standup. He is certainly talented and has great comedic timing!
@@reactswithjax I don't think he performed standup outside of this "warmup" task. I never saw an indication of it, but he was incredibly charming and put everybody in a great mood for the show. He was basically low man on the totem pole on that show, it being his first break. I was lucky enough to see several other great moments in television history ... like the All in the Family episode where Archie recommended arming all the passengers on a plane to solve the hijacking crisis. Thanks for doing what you do, Jax. I loved Lamby "running" or "Dancing" at the end - whatever that was you were doing with his front legs. You take cute to a whole new level. My best to you!
Favorite line is when his deceased wife says it'll just be the two of them forever, Alec Baldwin replies "Maybe this is heaven." We all need an Alec Baldwin in Beetlejuice in our lives.
People were upset about Michael Keaton becoming Batman because of this movie. They figured with his stature and his performance here, he'd make a better Joker, starting the trend of fans being mad at every single actor cast as Batman since.
The Harry Belafonte dance scenes are iconic. "Sounds like Lydia got an A in math" always pops in my head when I hear the end song. Sadly Harry passed earlier this year, but at an extremely advanced age having lived a very successful life as a civil rights activist and popularuzing Calypso music worldwide.
All of the cast, especially Michael Keaton, were amazing, and it includes two of the most catchy Harry Belafonte songs. Great film.
Jax, this is another from my childhood! Glad you enjoyed it for what it is, even though a lot goes unexplained in the film itself. Having done some reading on Wiki and other places, I can answer at least a few of your questions.
Betelgeuse does seem insanely powerful. Exactly why is never stated, but my guess it that he's driven by hatred of the living and a desire to make them suffer. I think that's why he wants so badly to be free -- to bring chaos to the living world without restraint or anyone to stop him. It's also why the rest of the afterlife bureaucracy is so eager to keep him sealed away. And you're right, the abjuration spell prevents Betelgeuse from freeing himself by saying his own name.
You're also correct about what was happening to the Maitlands in the climax. Otto thought that he was performing a seance, but it was really an exorcism ritual, which means that Adam and Barbara would have ended up as Lost Souls. And while I get your frustration with them, and I can also sympathize with the Maitlands for finding the "Recently Deceased" book a hard slog. Sure, the information there is necessary, but it can be awfully difficult to get through a book written by bureaucrats who seem unable to write without overly technical language.
I'm not sure exactly what happened to Betelgeuse in the end. One theory that I've read is that his wedding to Lydia was actually completed! He returned to the living world for just an instant until the sandworm devoured him, which sent him back to the afterlife's waiting room. Just a theory, but it kina makes sense to me.
And rather than a favourite line in this movie, Michael Keaton's was my favourite performance. It's so manic and menacing you can be forgiven for not recognizing him, and yet he makes the character almost lovable.
Can't wait until "Infinity War"!
Beetlejuice was a critical and commercial success in 1988, grossing $74.7 million on a $15 million budget. In video rental stores it was also very popular. A movie ticket back then only cost a few bucks.
“I just had Michael Scott’s voice”
Me too. Right when that line came out I started laughing.
Great minds think alike!
I remember first seeing this at a dollar movie theater in southeast Missouri, along with the rest of the staff of the summer camp I was working at, my very first job. I was 17. Pretty close in age to Winona Ryder.
That sounds like such a lovely memory. Also, a dollar movie theater is incredible!
My favorite piece of trivia is that "Nice Fucking Model!" Was directed at the Prop department (tree wasn't supposed to fall over). He stayed in character and they kept it in :)
Hahaha! That's amazing!! I love when impromptu one liners sneak into movies.
It's a polyester leisure suit that Otho's in at the end. Those were considered the height of tacky, worst fashion in the 70s. Naturally, that's what Cousin Eddie wears in the Vacation movies.
Oh my gosh! That's hysterical! Cousin Eddie is exactly the type to wear this suit.
@reactswithjax Try these movies: Angus, Now&Then, Stranger Than Fiction
Hi Jax! This is such a fun movie!! I saw it 1 1/2 times in the theater. The 1/2 time is because we got kicked out for loudly singing the songs!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well at least you had 1/2 of a good time! The songs in this movie are great.
@26:19--Otho, it seems to me, prides himself on being hip and trendy, hence being a hair analyst (briefly) and a paranormal researcher (until the bottom dropped out.) So ending up in a powder-blue 70s leisure suit would indeed have been a nightmare for him, especially out where everyone could see it.
My favorite lines in the movie are many, but two always stood out: "Don't mind her, she's still upset because someone dropped a house on her sister." and the one guest as everyone was leaving the first party: "Delia, you are a flake. You have always been a flake. If you insist on frightening people--do it with your sculpture."
Love this movie! Thanks for reacting to it!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
The line that worked the most for me was "I'll go insane and take you with me"
That was a wonderful line!
I once dressed up as Beetlejuice and won a Halloween costume contest
I had to have seen this movie 10 times while it was in the theater, it was so much fun! There are little bits going on in the background that you only notice on repeat watches, for instance;
In the scene where Charles is in his den reading a magazine while Adam and Barbara are talking around him, you notice little subscription cards are falling out of the magazine, but every time he turns a page more of them just keep falling out.
In the scene later in the movie in Juno's office, there's a mirror in her office, and in the mirror you see people reflected, but they're dead people, or skeletons, and you realize they're in a theater, it's supposed to be a reflection of the audience in the theater watching the movie!
Wow! Those are fantastic observations!! I'll have to go back and check those scenes out! ❤️
@@reactswithjax Beetlejuice is extremely rewatchable (maybe I'm biased). Even now I could probably recite all the dialog as I'm watching it, and I think it's so memorable because there really isn't any wasteful dialog in it, there's intentionality in everything said. Danny Elfman's score is amazing, I believe on the DVD there was an alternate score only audio track, and it really highlights how important the score is to the feel of the movie. One of my favorite scenes at the beginning of the movie, when Adam goes to the hardware store to pick up supplies, the old barber's story just cracks me up every time, especially how it just gets cut off abruptly where it sounds like it's about to get ugly and violent, and Adam rushes off, because he's probably heard and been disturbed by it many times before.
Favorite line? It's a tossup between Beetlejuice detailing his qualifications to the Maitlands, or when he turns into the snake and goes "We come for your daughter, Chuck"
His monologue where he details his qualifications is magnificent!
I grew up in the 80's and I never saw Wynona Ryder until Stranger Things, Seasons 1-3. Then I watched this and I'm kind of blown away by seeing the younger Wynona.
She's very young here! I haven't seen Stranger Things yet but I've heard that it's great.
@@reactswithjax *Gasp!* You poor sheltered child, Jax.
😅🤣😂 No spiders were harmed in the filming of this movie. 😂😅😂
"You didn't read the whole book?" As Dr. Strange would remind him, the warnings... the warnings come _after_ the spells :P
Yes! That is so true. 100 points to you for that awesome MCU reference! 🎉
The average spider doesn't weigh enough to be harmed by fall, even at terminal velocity.
I didn't know that! Spiders are like little super heroes...or villains. It depends on your perspective.
My two favorite lines:
"I gotta do a photo shoot for GQ in about an hour and a half. They've been after me for months. Doin' some kinda underwear deal." -Betelguese
"Coach... I don't think we survived that crash..." -Football player
Yes, the fly was screaming “Help me, Help me!” See the 1986 movie The Fly starring Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum.
Spiders and other small insects can easily survive a high fall. They have an exoskeleton that protects their bodies, plus their mass is much too small to suffer any fall damage
The entire world: *ignores the manual that comes with anything *
Jax, Juno, and every product engineer: Did you read the manual? It's quite clear!
: )
Again you've proven to be one of the best reactors and I love that you identified the dog as being the truly evil instigator.
The name Beetlejuice is a parody of Betelgeuse which is the name of a red giant star in the Constellation of Orion. It's famous in science fiction as being the intended destination of Taylor's spaceship in the original Planet of the Apes
In this movie, the lore is people who commit suicide have to become civil servants in the afterlife.
So everyone working in Juno's office, offed themselves.
I like the idea that the "feeling flat" ghost stepped out in traffic plus we see a guy in a nice suit hanging in the background he was either a 30s business man or a stock broker you recently died during the current crash. Miss Argentina probably slit her wrists because she lost the pageant
"I will go insane and take you with me" was my favorite line in this one.
Yes! That was a fantastic line.
I didn't see anyone else comment on this. When Beetlejuice makes his big appearance and knocks the pair through the ceiling...he next changes Otho's clothing to that awful blue suit...you were wondering about that, that's the suit he (Glenn Shadix) wore in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, when it happened, there's a little music change similar to Pee-Wee's theme music as well. Tim Burton also directed Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. It was just a wink-and-a-nod to the 1985 film.
That's such an awesome backstory on the suit!! Thanks for sharing that!
“Nobody likes you, Jane.” LOL
A different kind of haunted house movie with an unexpected twist is THE OTHERS. A real horror flick but fascinating
this movie is very bizar in a great way

I took my (now) ex-wife to see this on our first date. I really wanted to see it as I liked the trailers on TV and it seemed something that was right up my alley. After the movie we were walking back to my car & I commented on how much I enjoyed the movie. She said she didn't like it at all! LOL I should have known that was a sign. My love for this movie lasted much longer than that marriage. Although since then I have seen the movie a couple of times with our son who also said he loves the movie! Funny how things work out.
"Though I know I should be wary,

"It's showtime" Easy but it's such a classic.
That's such a great line!
I'm with you.... it's really fun and creepy and charming all at once.... but doesn't make a lick of sense😂!
1:40 "You just threw him out the window?"
He'll be fine.
He could have thrown it off the roof of a skyscraper and the spider would fall all the way to the street and be just fine.
Until the car runs over it, but still, the fall wouldn't kill it.
Really big spiders like tarantulas can be hurt or killed from falling, but not that little guy.
Physics.
Since you asked, my favorite line was "I've seen The Exorcist about 167 times and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it!"
Another Burton/Keaton movie you should check out is Batman (1989). Keaton's also good in a small role as Dogberry in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
1988 was a good year for Winona Ryder. I had a big crush on her after seeing her in this movie and in Heathers.
Btw, Beetlejuice 2 is in production now for release in September of next year. Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, and Michael Keaton will be back, and Jenna Ortega will play Lydia's daughter. Tim Burton is directing it.
Since Keaton is older, probably wouldn't need as much special effects. Similar with palpatine in the prequels.
Always wondered what the lost souls room was. Love that sequence.
It's... showtime..!
That's such a great line!
30:03 Beetlejuice is chaotic evil. :)

This film is the best kind of weird. Loved it when it came out and its never gotten old decades later. I love the humor in it. Its such great satire.
“Why are dogs in movies so wonderful?”
10 seconds later:
Dog kills main characters.
I really like that in your re-cap, you focus on the emotional and psychological well-being of the characters.
Don't worry, Beetlejuice and Lydia end up becoming close friends in the animated series.. It's somewhat canon to the movie.
The Fly screaming "Help Me" is a reference to the horror movie "The Fly" where a guy gets turned into a fly.
That's such a cool reference! What a scary concept for a horror movie.
@@reactswithjax Oh It's much worse than I make it sound. There was an original in 1958 with a sequel in 1959 and then a remake with Jeff Goldblum in 1986 with a sequel in 1989. I've been told the original was freaky as heck, but the remake was intensely horrible. I can't watch horror so I've never seen them, but I have friends that do and they like them!
The actress that played Juno who helps them in the afterlife worked with Tim Burton again in the movie Mars Attacks. A silly version of Independence Day you'd enjoy
That's awesome!
The first time I saw Michael Keaton was in a movie called Night Shift. I feel that he was more into comedic roles in his early career.
SEQUEL IS FINALLY CONFIRMED!! Great reaction Jax and Lamby, I love your channel!! Keep up the awesome work!!
@marvel-ousre-grind8724 Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed my reaction. Considering how wild this movie was, I'm excited to see how Keaton reprises the role! It looks like the cast is incredible.
25:17 In everyday speech, most people might just mean skim through rather than read every single word from cover to cover. Not exactly a lie, that's just how most people talk.
True!
There was an animated series of Beetljuice which I always enjoyed as a kid. And if you want to see more spooky, Halloween themed, comedy type movie I'd suggest "Idle Hands", and "Tucker And Dale Vs Evil"!!
There’s a Bettlejuice cartoon that was made after the movie, that happened a lot in the 80s&90s, that was fun.
Don't worry, spiders dont weigh enough to be harmed by falls from heights. At least not the small ones, the bigger spiders that have some weight to them might have problems.

the fly screaming "help me!" is a reference to, well, The Fly
Beetlejuice's whole shtick was to sow chaos. He wasn't evil only selfish and concerned with a good time.
That's exactly what he is! Pure chaos.
Regarding the fly screaming “help me!” It’s referencing the original ( *NOT* the 1986 remake) movie “The Fly” from 1958, starring Vincent Price.
The remake stars Jeff Goldblum, and…Geena Davis!
They’re both worth watching, but the “help me!” comes from the original.
Welcome to the world of Tim Burton. This one is such a great combo of lovely and creepy. I watched Edward Scissorhands this week again and it has a very similar feel.
What a fantastic description! Lovely and creepy.
This is a classic! The only thing that ever bothered me was that they haunted the house they lived in instead of the bridge they died on(which would have made more sense) but I understand that it had to be the house for the sake of the story.
Yes, that threw me for a minute. I figured they were still alive at first since they made it back to the house. But, I imagine that since they had more of an emotional attachment to the house than the bridge, their souls became attached to it.
@@reactswithjax That actually makes perfect sense.
It’s Showtime!!!
That was a great line!!
I took my high school crush to see this. She identified with Lydia and she loved it. So did the friend she unexpectedly brought. It's only a weird first date movie until you find out it's not a date.
Oh no, I'm sorry!
Beetlejuice isn't evil he is just pure chaos
That's a perfect way of describing him!
If I understand it correctly the ghosts operating inside of the rules of their own realm can do anything they truly believe that they can. Thus the furniture moving for Beetlejuice, the dance with the floating people and the wedding scene at the end and the stopping of it. Barbara controlled the sand worm because she believed that she could make it do what she wanted. Beetlejuice got sent back to the department of dead because in the realm of the Maitlands once they asserted their authority they were more powerful than Beetlejuice.
omg I haven't seen this movie in like 20 years, awww you got lambi a little costume lol. thats so cute
