Saw them 3 times in Portsmouth and London. A brilliant live band in this era. Natalie is a mesmerising frontwoman and the rest of the Maniacs were the perfect partners.

So much energy from all the band, such a shame the audience didn't realise that they were witnessing greatness at the time.

@@garrycraig2095 that's great, that earlier material is brilliant, with planned obs, tension, etc. I love the jangly guitar as Andy Kershaw once commented!

We knew, we were just polite and quietly listened to the music, rather than screaming a shouting, to the point you could hardly hear the performance.

I remember this as we recorded The Tube every Friday on our VCR back in the 1980's.
My mother 40 at the time thought they were fantastic. Merchant can only be 21 or 22 here.

This show introduced me to the band...loved them ever since. Only saw them live once in Edinburgh, Scotland...Natalie solo several times. Much prefer the bands material...no sound like Rob Buck on guitar. Genius !

I can not believe this was recorded on a Hi-Fi VCR back in 1985!
This recording is such a gem.

I couldn't comment on the B-52's introduction... So... I'll just say that 10,000 Maniacs is one of the greatest bands ever... Prove me wrong.

Is John Lombardo playing bass on My Mother The War while Steve Gustafson plays guitar? Interesting.

Yep, both John and Steven would trade off from the beginning of the band til John's departure in 1986.

Steve Albini once said that Nirvana was just REM with a fuzz box so yeah, mid-80s through the early 90s sounds about right. But I’ll take Merchant/Lombardo/Buck over Stipes/Buck.

I just noticed they have two bass guitars. There is a live Samhain video of them playing Archangel live with two bass guitars. I probably would have not noticed the two bass situation without your comment
